Baby Products Reviews of Playtex Diaper Genie Twist- Away Pail SystemCustomer Review: Good Product but doesn't cut properly!! Summary: 3 Stars
We like our N&I Diaper Genie (even bought two, one for up and downstairs) however the darned things just will not empty out as easily as it is advertised. We've followed the instructions on how to empty it using the built in cutter yet no matter what we do, neither of them will cut. We end up dumping all of the sausage rolled diapers into a garbage bag until we get to the one at the top that is still hanging from the inside and then we have to cut it with scissors. Definitely defeats the purpose emptying it out easily but again, we'd rather have this product than the Diaper Champ which didn't seem to have as tight of a seal to keep the odors in like the Genie does. All in all, we're pretty satisfied with it, except for the cut function!
Update 9/19 - This product is horrible. The lid fell off earlier today. Why? We don't know. I followed the directions to put the lid back on but really had to force it. When I finally put all my weight on it, it snapped into place but not before it smashed my finger in it. Needless to say, we are not happy with this product at all..Definitely not user friendly..A mom with a swollen finger.
Customer Review: I would recommend it Summary: 4 Stars
I like the Diaper Genie. I have found that it will hold a lot with the smaller diapers, (when you are changing your little one frequently.) Once you get into the larger diapers, it really doesn't hold a lot, but at that point you are only changing them 5 or 6 times a day anyway. I don't have to empty it more than a couple times a week.
As far as smell goes, everyone knows diapers stink. When the pail is closed, you can't smell a thing. If you leave it open, you can smell the diapers. I have found that it helps to spray the inside with Lysol every time you empty it. Every time I run out of refills, I clean the pail with a bleach solution in the shower before I put new bags in. That really helps a lot, and I think it keeps it more sanitary.
I would recommend this product if you can't run outside to throw away the diapers every time you change your baby. It is convenient and easy to use. We have had ours for over a year and still use it. I admit, the refills are costly, but they last for quite awhile. If you use coupons, shop around for the best prices, and stock up, it's not so bad.
Customer Review: Extremely over-rated Summary: 2 Stars
I will give the Diaper Genie this: It works. It does the job of containing diapers, and considering the contents of the container, it does a relatively good job of containing the smell. There are a few draw-backs to this item though.
1. You MUST roll the diaper. This is fine for wet diapers, but for an EXTREMELY messy, runny, up the back, nasty one... You WILL get poo on your hands.
2. You have to PUSH the messy, runny, up the back, nasty diaper down past the clips. If you did not get poo on your hands in the step before this, you will get it on your hands for this step.
3. The refills do not last long. One refill lasted long enough for me to change the genie 4-5 times with size 1 diapers and 3-4 times with size two diapers. And the refills aren't cheap.
4. It doesn't hold much. I had to change it every 5-6 days. Dumping the "worm" of diapers into a trashbag and hauling them outside that often gets old.
5. The cutting blade dulls fast, making changing the genie even more difficult.
KEEP CLEAN AND SAVE YOUR MONEY ON REFILLS- GO WITH THE CHAMP!!!
Customer Review: Like the genie, don't like the cost of the refills... Summary: 4 Stars
I received the Genie as a shower gift and have been using it for three months:
Pros:
Little to no odor - I do empty the Genie every other day and always wipe it down with a disinfecting towlette. It takes 5 minutes tops to empty and clean.
The diapers are "sealed" and I don't have to worry about diaper smell or a blow out while I empty the unit or odor in the outside garbage can.
The unit is small enough to stash in the corner and big enough to hold two days worth of diapers - probably more - but ewww.
Cons:
Cost of the refills. In my area, I can find them for $5.00 on sale. A refill lasts me approximately two weeks.
It's a bit tricky to get used to. It took my husband and I about a week to really get it down. A bit long for a diaper disposal system.
Bottom line: I like it. Diaper disposal is not the most enjoyable thing, but the Genie makes it significantly easier. I've never had a refill bag rip or spill (perhaps this explains the high cost?) but I do see the allure of using regular trash bags.
Customer Review: There is no perfect poopy diaper disposal system Summary: 3 Stars
To all of the people saying the first diaper falls through and doesn't start the "suasage" effect--it states clearly in the directions that you have to position the first diaper between the clamps, then twist--it won't fall through if you just follow the directions!!!!! It's not that complicated, either--you just rest it in the clamps and twist a few times.
I like the system because it does keep the poopy odor out of the nursery for the most part, but I only gave it 3 stars because the plastic has seemed to absorb some of the smell. Ours is 2 years old--the only thing that works to get the smell out is to air it outside. I think if I'm going to have to air it out anyway like any diaper pail, I shouldn't have to go through the motions of cutting & tying the insert, etc. etc. I also don't like being held hostage to buying their refills.
I am expecting my second baby in a month, and the bottom line is that I think we may just get a plain old diaper pail--and empty it every night. I think getting the dirty diapers out of the nursery is the only way to truly eliminate odors.
