Baby Products Reviews of Playtex Diaper Genie Twist- Away Pail SystemCustomer Review: Helpful tips for this great product Summary: 4 Stars
We bought the new version of the diaper genie when our son was born. He is 19 months old, and we still use it, and still love it. There is some odor when you empty the pail, but we have found that if you spray some Lysol into the bottom of the pail before you close it, this helps neutralize any leftover odors. You MUST use the correct liners for the odor-blocking to work. As soon as your baby takes anything besides breast milk, change to the Stage 2 (toddler) liners. This includes formula, as formula poops smell stronger than breast milk ones. Also, for those who complain that the genie doesn't hold enough diapers, try this: for urine only diapers (i.e., no poop!), simply throw them away in a regular garbage can. We have found that because our son is so hydrated, these diapers do not smell at all, and this way they don't take up precious room in the genie. We empty the genie once a week, just before trash day, and have no problems with odor. It also took us some time to figure out how the system works (with much puzzled head scratching!), but once you get it, it's easy. Unlike some other systems, our curious and enterprising toddler cannot get into the diaper genie. That alone makes any hassle worth it for us. Hope this helps!
Customer Review: Piece O' Junk Summary: 1 Stars
Well I actually read from the site that the Diaper Genie was good and bought it. Well..nope. Here are the things that stink (no pun intended) about it..
1. You are supposed to be able to twist the dial at the top to seal the diaper up. At almost every playgroup I go to (and my diaper Genie as well) the top has not sealed the last diaper so when you go to put your new diaper in, you get the wonderful aroma of aged poop. Lovely!
2. The blade that is supposed to cut the bag so that you can empty the contents has never worked the first time. You have to sit there and push the button over and over again. It is pretty silly.
3. The replacement bags are expensive and they have different types for different ages in order to be more complicated. I guess one has to be picky when it comes to diaper trash bags!
4. All diaper trashcans are going to smell. Both Diaper Champ and Genie cut down on the smell but you are asking for a miracle if you think you are never going to smell poop in your baby's room.
Anyways, after buying the Genie, I bought the champ and I am perfectly happy with it. Plus it is kind of fun flipping the top to get the diaper in. (simple pleasures!)
Customer Review: LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the diaper genie based on previous experience with my mom using it with my much younger siblings. And my baby boy is almost 1 month old and we have had to empty it twice and we're still using the refill that came with it. What i love about it is how easy it is to use it. It does open with one hand, don't listen to the other reviews they just aren't using it right. There is a small notch, about the size of a nickel under the button that opens it, it's there for you to slide your finger under and use your thumb to press on the button, and WOW...it opens with one hand :) Yah it does make a crinkling noise when putting the diaper in and a cranking noise when turning the dial on top, but that doesn't bother me cause i don't want my baby to need complete silence to sleep, i think it's better they get used to loud noise's now and learn to sleep through them. Also it's really easy to empty, just use one hand to push the cutting button and the other to turn the dial, open the bottom and you have a nice strand of diapers tightly wound ready for the trash. Also we haven't had any problems with smell, and it's currently in our bedroom next to the pack n play. Definetly worth it, just don't buy it here, we got it locally for $25.
Customer Review: Hate it Summary: 1 Stars
We had planned to buy the Diaper Dekor System after reading reviews in the latest Baby Bargains book. However, for some unknown reason we went with the brand we'd heard of most. We didn't even use it long enough to find out if the smell was contained. It's a pain to lift it open, drop in the diaper and twist to seal...then we always reopen the lid to be sure it sealed and dropped because it doesn't always do that. The latest issue is that the diaper drops in and falls all the way to the bottom (rather than staying in its little pocket that gets sealed), then we twist and twist and twist and nothing happens...we open up the lid again to see the diaper still sitting in the bottom of the pail!! I just hate it. Our daughter is 4.5 months and we've just been using a random little plastic trash can whose lid opens when you step on an outside pedal. I had originally intended for it to be a general trash can for her room and have small plastic trash bags that I line it with. We've been using it for 3.5 months now and her nursery smells great even though the trash stinks horribly when I when I change out the plastic trash bags every 5 or so days. Who needs the diaper Genie?!?!?
Customer Review: Best at odor control but a bit pricey for refills Summary: 4 Stars
We owned the new and improved Diaper Genie for the first 17 months of our daughter's life and loved it overall. We actually received it as a hand-me-down from my cousin, so it had already been used for a while. Sadly, the hinge on the lid broke recently so that it is no longer useable. The broken hinge and the cost of refills is why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5. Because the refills are pricey ($6 each on sale, or up to $9 each at a grocery store if not on sale), we decided to replace it with a Diaper Champ that uses regular kitchen garbage bags. I think the Diaper Champ would be fine for breastfed babies, but it STINKS at odor-control for babies and toddlers who eat solids (literally). We even tried scented "odor-guard" garbage bags to no avail. We have to wrap any stinky diapers in an additional plastic bag before placing in the Diaper Champ or the smell is just unbearable. Without double wrapping, we would have to empty it at least once a day. If you have a sensitive nose I would definitely recommend the Diaper Genie as superior. Just realize that you will have to pay the price for refills, and stock up when on sale.
