Customer Review: Defeats the "Champ"
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used both the Diaper Genie (original) and the Diaper Champ for over two years. Although the Diaper Genie is a little tricky to load, it is not bad once you get used to it. It sounds the the "new" Genie makes refilling even easier. The Genie refills are more expensive compared to the standard kitchen bags of the Champ (hence 4 stars instead of 5). However, the Genie is far superior to the Champ. The Genie uses a tube of plastic to encapsulate the dirty diaper with a twisting mechanism. This seals dirty diapers indivually as they are deposited and results in significanly less odor than the Champ or other lidded diaper pail. Every time you put a diaper in the Champ the plunger mechanism blasts you with the stench of the previous week's dirty diapers. Another benefit of the Genie is that the plastic tube where diapers are inserted is disposable. If the diapers are not wrapped upon themselves such that no poop is exposed, it ends up coming off where diapers are inserted into can. For the Genie, this part is thrown away with diapers, for the Champ, this is a fixed tube and plunger that smears and is difficult to clean. I got so tired of cleaning the Champ every week that I eventually stopped using it. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money for the Genie inserts, it's worth the extra sanity during hectic times.

When I was pregnant with my daughter (she's 22 mos now) I researched EVERYTHING before I registered. I read reviews here, I read a book that went over all the lateset baby gear and ranked them safety wise, ease-of-use wise and cost wise. I also talked to other moms I knew. When it came to diaper disposal the diaper genie won, hands-down. However, after 22 mos of diaper changes, 11 of those being double duty as I now have an 11 mos old son, I disagree. When your baby is a newborn and in anything smaller than a size 2 diaper, it's a pain in the butt. The diapers a lot of time fall thru unless you wrap then just right. It's hard to get the "sausage" started. My biggest complaint however is that after about 9 mos the plastic had absorbed the smell so badly that nothing would take it out (we tried bleach, baking soda, and air fresheners). We continued to use it until my on was about 2 months old and then it went to the curb with the dirty diapers still inside. I found what works best for me is a small can with a shopping bag that I take out every day or even every other day. It's actully less work as this is how often I had to change the diaper genie to keep down the smell. Believe me, I know dirty butts...On a "good" day I can change as many as 10 poopy ones (oh lucky me). The diaper genie is just not worth it!

Customer Review: Not worth the money.

I liked the smell of the diaper gene or the odor the bags let off. Covers up odors really well.
Basically it works like this:
One long continuous bag that gets twisted around each diaper to lock in odor and make dumping a breeze, bag gets cut and drops into the container below, now your ready for the next diaper. Not that easy.
First of all it's not easy to turn the knob for a smaller petite mother. Talk about a wrist workout. Then the cutter hardly worked causing the dirty diaper and most of the bag to come back out once you try and open it again. And if you get it to cut correctly you have to actually reach in and tie the bag again for the next diaper. I might be crazy but I never saw that on the box. Then when you do get the hang of it and more and more diapers go in, you have to empty it. And boy this little container doesn't hold that much. As much as newborns and larger babies poop you would think Playtex would have made it much larger and taller.
Overall I was disappointed. I tossed more diapers in the trash then I did in the gene. It fills up really fast and doesn't work like it says. I had to retie the bag after each turn.
More of a workout than a convenience.
Would I buy it again. No
Am I glad I got it. Sort of. I didn't pay for it.

I have had the "new and improved" daiper genie for about 14 months. At first it worked great: no smell at all. Then everything went to he** in a handbasket. First the lid broke off the top, now everytime I put a diaper in I have to reposition the lid. Second, the twister part on the lid broke so I have to turn the plastic ring on the inside the get it to "tie off" the daipers. Third, the cutter on the lid got worn down or something and it catches all the time and we have alot of problems getting it cut the bag. Fourth, after having it for so long, my nursery stinks to high heaven. I do change my genie often and it's like the smell is imbedded into the plastic so no matter what I do to clean it, it smells awful. And as a personal complaint, I can't stand that I have to either tip the genie on its side or lift the whole thing up off the floor while holding the trashbag underneath it to empty it. This can be very difficult to do and (on rare occasion when I haven't gotten a good enough tie on the end) a daiper comes flying out the top if I don't get every "sausage" in the trash bag on the first try. This is very disgusting. Does anyone else have that problem?

P.S.-I have a 1 and 2 year old and use the stage 2 daipers. I am going to try a Neat! Diaper Disposal system and see how well it works.

Customer Review: From a First Time Father - I love this thing
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to say I was very much the stereotypical guy before my daughter was born. "I DON'T WANT TO CHANGE ANY DIAPERS!" To an extent that is still the case, but I'm no doofus - I know I have to, and I do - at least a couple times a day. Anyway, the main reason I didn't want to is the stink. Now there's not much you can do about the diaper when it comes off your kid, but the New & Improved Diaper Genie works wonders! Unless I'm going to empty the thing (which is done outside into the large trash can anyway), the inside of the house is kept stink free by this gadget.

The way it works is you push the diaper down into the bag, twist the top a few times, creating a "diaper sausage". The sausages are kept sealed up, which is where most of the smell prevention comes from, I would imagine. I had a relative back home who swore by this thing, so it went on my wife's and mine baby registry.

I'm glad we did. This thing works great. The only downside I see to it is that you have to buy refills for it. But I consider that a worthwhile expense if it helps keep diaper stink away.

Not sure where all these negative reviews are coming from, unless it's from people who don't know how to properly use the thing.
