Baby Products Reviews of Playtex Diaper Genie Twist- Away Pail SystemCustomer Review: Noisy, difficult to maneuver, wasteful Summary: 1 Stars
I have several issues with this product:
1. You have to push the diaper down with your hand to get it in position to twist. This is just plain hazardous with a very full diaper no matter how tightly you wrap it.
2. It is loud. The process of first pushing the diaper in into the crunchy plastic, clamping the lid shut and then ratcheting the turn lever three or four times is a noisy process that often (especially in the early morning hours) startles my 5 month old and makes her jump.
3. Baby is left on table unattended while you use both hands to push, ratchet and twist. You are supposed to be able to manage this with one hand. I know that I have not been able to master that technique as I imagine other bleary eyed new Mom's have not either.
4. It just does not hold nearly as many diapers as the manufacturer claims. However, since odor is an issue within a day of use, it really does not get full before it is emptied. My daughter is lactose intolerant and has had very strong smelling stools since day one and we need to empty it daily or every other day. which brings me to...
5. Waste. You waste bag every time you empty it because you have to leave a "tail" to knot when you take the bags off and another when you start a new. I have found this to be tricky, if you do not pull a little extra out before you cut it can leave too little to knot. Obviously the more you need to empty the thing, the more bag you use, the more refills they sell.
Customer Review: Better than the competition Summary: 4 Stars
At first I did not want to waste money on refills so we registered for a different diaper pail. After 8 months, we couldn't STAND the smell of our pail. We deodorized it and sanitized it and tried everything else we could think of, but nothing helped. Although I still did not want to start buying refills, I decided to give the Diaper Genie a try, based on the recommendations of friends. Well, the refills are well worth it! First of all, although the Toddler refills are more expensive, I don't go through them nearly as fast as I did the Infant refills. My son does not soil his diapers nearly as often as he did when he was a baby. I only have to empty the Genie once a week, on garbage night. When I do this, I also wipe the inside with a disinfecting Clorox wipe and spray an odor neutralizer inside. This has kept my Diaper Genie fresh and clean for over a year now! The only thing that detracts from this product is that you have to read the directions thoroughly to get used to the different steps in depositing diapers, emptying the refill, etc. Unfortunately, a couple of eager babysitters (grandma and an uncle) twisted the wrong parts and tore up the bottom of the refill ring. It is now a bit harder to replace the refill, but I understand that this is no longer a problem with the New and Improved Diaper Genie! I am expecting my second child in a couple of months and I am hoping to receive the Improved model for my birthday soon!! :-)
Customer Review: This is a great product Summary: 5 Stars
I was given a diaper Genie 6 1/2 years ago when I was expecting my daughter. I loved it then and I love it now. It still works perfectly, with no signs of wear or tear. My second child (a boy) just turned 1. I decided to upgrade to the New & Improved, just because I thought it was prettier and the opening is a little bigger.
It is easy to use, and I can use it one handed. But to do this you have to put the diaper down first (but common sense tells me this is true with all diaper pails) Sometimes with the old and the new, you have to put in two diaper before it seals tightly (makes tight "sausage links"). The shortest amount of time I have ever had between emptying is one week. It holds about 30 newborn diapers. The refills can run about $4.99 each, but you can catch sells and buy several at a time, and a refill lasts me about a month. My old version did develope an odor issue, but I probably could have cleaned it more often, or maybe it was just old. The N&I version controlls stink very well (as long as you use the correct liner, but even they tell you that).
Bottom line, this is a great baby product, a must have for any house with a child in diapers. People that complain about it are expecting miracles ( like a pail that changes diapers for you, then makes the dirty diaper disappear), or they probably are just the type to find fault in anything and complain. So to no surprise I am sure they are going to hate this review.
Customer Review: It's not great but it's the best you can find Summary: 3 Stars
Let's face it, diapers STINK! I've heard complaints that the diaper genie starts to get stinky after awhile - well guess what folks? Just like any other item that might contain smelly stuff, it does need to be cleaned sometimes! Would you never clean your toilet and expect it to smell like roses?
Anyway, it does a fine job of getting stinky diapers out of your sight and in the garbage without having to empty the darn thing every time the baby poops, which in the beginning is like 12 times per day. And believe me folks, when you're a new Mom with a newborn, you just plain old do not have the energy to worry about trooping stinky bags of poopy diapers outside to the garbage every hour or so.
The reason I docked the diaper genie two stars is for the construction. These things are made to break. I have two children, the second of which is 2 years old and still in need of a diaper genie. I just purchased my FIFTH Diaper Genie after my two year old snapped the lid off while I was changing the bag.
Why do I keep buying the darn things? As my rating states, it's the best one out there if you want a diaper containment system. If you're happy using regular plastic trash/grocery bags you really don't need a diaper containment system. Rock on with dragging the stinky bags out to the garbage can 5 times a day. And if you leave them in your inside garbage can, I'm not coming over to visit! :-)
Customer Review: Odor Control 5 stars, everything else 1 star Summary: 3 Stars
I have been using the Diaper Genie for two years. As far as keeping the diaper smell out it works fantastic! I've been in other kids' rooms and some of them smell so bad I have to hold my breath to go in, but our sons room smells fine. However, after about a year of use the lid hinge broke, so now everytime we use it we have to remove the lid completely and then put it back on after we're done (trust me-if you leave the lid off the odor control is not nearly as effective, plus, you need the lid in order to cut the plastic). Another thing to beware of is diapers being in the pail without a liner. If this every happens-whether it's because you tried to put in "just one more diaper" when there wasn't enough film in the refill or someone accidentally tears the plastic- then the smell gets into the pail and will not go away.
The Daiper Genie is easy to use, once you figure it out. However, we've found that friends and babysitters are often confused and instead of twisting the plastic to "sausage" the diaper, they twist the cutting blades instead, which is a hassle because you have to fix it right away or you get the smelly pail problem I mentioned earlier.
Overall, I've been pretty happy with my Diaper Genie, but I'm expecting my second baby now and I am definitely considering a switch. If I can find another pail to keep the smell out then I'd switch in a heartbeat-if for no other reason than to save a ton on refills.
