Customer Review: horrible mess with newborn diapers
Summary: 1 Stars

The tabs that are supposed to hold the rolled up diaper as it gets wrapped in plastic are not long enough to keep the ultratrim newborn diapers in place. So you just end up having to jam one dirty diaper on top of the other.

You would be much better off with a waste basket and a plastic bag. To operate the diaper genie you have to stuff the dirty diaper way down a sleeve until the diaper is held between the tabs. There is no clear indication from the outside to show where these tabs are. I had to open the bottom of the device and look from that end while stuffing a diaper from the other end to learn how far to push the diaper.

When it is time to empty the mess, the cutting hooks that release the tube filled with dirty diapers don't actually cut the plastic. They just tear huge holes in it without separating the tube. I assume this is another consequence of the tabs allowing the newborn size diapers to rotate instead of holding them in place.

Besides being a badly executed design, the diaper genie is also flimsy. The button on the top door already popped off (but it could be popped on again) and it takes two hands to close the bottom door, one hand to hold the barrel, another to align the door just right with the latch.

All in all, this product is a disgrace. It will be thrown out on the next trash day along with the mess inside.

Customer Review: Good buy for newborns not for older children
Summary: 4 Stars

I received this item before my first child was born. It is easy to assemble. We use the diaper genie for poopy diapers only. Using it this way, the refills lasted about 3 weeks while he was in size 1 diapers and 4 weeks now that he is in size 2. We could fit about 25 size 1 diapers in the genie before emptying it. It only fits 12-15 size 2's. We have had no problems with the smell. I find that the bedroom smells for a little while immediately after changing a poopy diaper because the smell is in the air. But, if you walk into the room when the diaper genie is full, you would never know it. Once the air clears, there is no residual smell from the diaper genie. I didn't find the refills too expensive or too quick to be used up because we only put poopy diapers in the diaper genie. The only complaint I have is how few larger diapers fit into it. For newborns, this is a great product. But, as you can see from the number of diapers that the genie will hold, this product is not much use once your child starts to grow. I don't think we will use this product once we graduate to size 3 diapers. Even as it is now, it seems like the diaper genie is always full. If you are looking for a short term diaper smell solution, this is a great product, but you are not likely to use it for the entire time your child is in diapers.

Customer Review: GREAT idea, COSTLY refills, some ODORS
Summary: 3 Stars

I received two diaper genies from baby shower gifts and use them both. I find it easier, if one is full or needs a bag refill, I can empty/change that when I have time and not be without the use of the diaper can. I've noticed that it does start to retain odors. (I've had mine 6 months and baby's only been on solids about two weeks) I assume this has something to do with the type of plastic used for the genie. I don't use lysol products or the like but have had to start since I don't care for the smells. This adds additional cleaning to my already full list. The whole purpose of the genie is to wrap and seal those diapers, odors and yuckiness, so your life is easier. I could ignore the expense of the refills (within reason) if the genie worked as promised. Yes it does seal, but the odors seem to saturate the plastic container. I don't find it difficult to use. Like anything, you have to use it and refill it a couple of times to become proficient at it. It does become a little tricky emptying the genie, to hold the genie up and keep the contents from going other than where you want them to, but at least they are wrapped. It's better to empty into a can (for the support of the can) and not into a trash bag. I've heard a mention about a diaper champ and plan to check that out.

Customer Review: Should've listened to my friends on this one
Summary: 2 Stars

Before my baby was born I asked several friends their opinion of the Diaper Genie. I should have listened. None of them liked it and were using other brands that I had never heard of. Since the Diaper Genie was the most popular name out there, I went ahead and purchased it. Big mistake. Hello? You need 2 hands to operate the thing. First you have to open it, then after you put the diaper in you have to twist...not once, not twice, but THREE times! Then close the top. Try this with a baby in your hands. If your pregnant and don't have any kids, imagine doing all this one handed!!! Emptying it isn't all that complicated, after you've practiced a few times. The first time will take FOREVER though! Oh, and the straw that broke the camels back is when my daughter started to cry everytime I had to twist twist twist. Apparently she is afraid of the sound of plastic. Too loud I guess. I finally threw mine in the garage and bought a Diaper Champ. I am so much happier with it! You don't have to buy the refills...I mean come on...you're already spending oodles on diapers! You can use ordinary tall kitchen bags. You can use this thing with only one hand. This is WONDERFUL!!! Just drop the diaper in, pull the handle over and done. That's it! I wish I had listened to my friends in the first place!

Customer Review: After Two other Pails-- This is REALLY WORTH THE MONEY
Summary: 4 Stars

I originally read the reviews for this product when I was registering for baby items for my firstborn. I didn't like the idea of buying refills, and it looked a bit difficult to operate, so I went and purchased the Diaper Wizard, since it used regular trash bags, and seemed to have a comparable seal. After using it for a month, and emptying it every day, my WHOLE HOUSE STUNK! I gave in and bought the Diaper Genie. I LOVE IT. I still have to buy refills, but they are relatively cheap when you get them at a Wholesale club. I buy 2 of the toddler packs every month and I haven't run out. I have a 5 month old and a 23 month old using it, along with all the diaper wipes, and we empty it every 2-3 days. The first diaper is hard to start, but if you follow the directions and push it far enough into the clamp, and twist it 3 times, everything works great. The only thing I dislike it having to touch poopy diapers and squish them down into the clamp. However, if I fold them up into a little package and then cover it with a clean baby wipe, I'm usually okay. (I just get grossed out by the idea of poop possibly squiching out the sides of a diaper onto my hands!) Other than having to use a baby wipe, this pail is great. The house smells wonderful, you'd never know we had two in diapers!
