Customer Review: Please purchase the Diaper Duck by Munchkin Instead
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this product because I did not think there was anything better out there and while I knew it would not elminiate odor it would do a better job of containing it than an ordinary trash can. I have found a product that does ELIMINATE the odor of very foul diapers-the Diaper Duck by Munchkin.Diaper Duck Dispenser. This will over time cost a lot less than the diaper genie. The diaper genie itself is around 30.00 and refills are 6.99 and are used for both soiled and wet diapers and so you go through them faster plus the smell is not contained. Whereas with the diaper duckie the inital cost is 5.99 and 36 refil bags are just 4.99Diaper Duck Scented Bag Refills - 36pk is 4.95 and you only need to use them for soiled diapers and all can go in an ordinary cheap trash can and there is NO ODOR. If I had known this prior to my initial use of the diaper genie I would have not continued to use it. Why have i continued to use it??? because my husband makes me use what I buy so that he feels like we did not waste money. I will not use it with the next child. I hope this helps.

Customer Review: It does control odor, but...
Summary: 2 Stars

While it controls the smell of poopy diapers -and that is the only reason why I gave this product 2 stars-, it does have several design flaws:

1. It requires the use of both hands to open the lid. I wish it was a step can instead. It is not an easy task while you are trying to change a baby and you have no extra help. Too many times I ended up throwing the diapers in the trashcan, which defeats the purpose of having a diaper genie in the first place.

2.- It also requires two hands and getting on your knees to open the bottom half to empty the contents. And instead of having small bags for each diaper, you have a big one. And that big one is not cut and tied by the diaper genie, but you. Yucky and not hygienic at all.

3. The pail is not roomy enough and gets quickly filled up.

4. You have to manually push the diaper to the bottom of the pail. And when you have one of the "explosive" diapers, well...you can imagine the rest.

5. The refills are expensive!!

So, I guess you would be better off investing in a good trashcan that can be used even after baby and a box of odor-control trash bags.

Customer Review: Keeps odors at bay but cutting mechanism needs improvement
Summary: 4 Stars

This improved model works very well for our family. It does an admirable job of keeping the diaper stink away from the rest of the room. I liked how I didn't have to twist each load of diaper like in the previous model. You just push diapers through a hatch. Easy enough.

But as far as holding up to 180 diapers, as it claims--I'm not too sure. It doesn't seem to use as many refills as the original DG, but that number seems a bit high. Maybe it can hold that many preemie diapers. From my estimate, it holds about up to half that many diapers. But I do use a lot of wipes and tissues to wipe my baby's bum and my hands after a diaper change.

One thing I would like improvement on is the cutting edge used to remove the liner when the diaper genie is full. I find that I have to wrestle with the liner to get it cutting right. I just found it easier and faster to have scissors nearby and use those scissors to snip the liner, instead of using the cutting mechanism within the pail.

Overall, the DG II is a good diaper pail that is expensive to use but worth it because it really contains the awful diaper smell.

Customer Review: Spend an extra ten to get the Elite version
Summary: 2 Stars

The Diaper Genie II and it's brother the Diaper Genie II Elite are barely related. We bought a Diaper Genie II to supplement our Diaper GEnie II Elite. It appeared as if the only difference was size - slightly smaller - and the lack of a foot pedal. What we didn't realize was that the foot pedal was how the ingenious airlock system works on the Elite. On the regular Diaper Genie II, you have to push the diaper through the hole. first, it takes quite a bit of pressure. Secondly, you have to push it WITH the diaper - and you can imagine that you might get your hands dirty doing that. So, we were disappointed as soon as we set it up and saw how it works - but it was too late to return the product. So now we're stuck with it.

Updated ...
We have been using it for a month and have gotten used to it. I'd still recommend the Elite II, but this product isn't bad for a 2nd diaper disposal unit. You do get used to the amount of pressure required to push down a diaper and as new parents, we've learned how to roll up the diaper into a tiny, compact package. It's been about a month and I haven't gotten my hands dirty yet.

Customer Review: way better than previous Diaper Genie!
Summary: 5 Stars

Just bought Diaper Genie II 2 months ago and it's already clearly better than the one we were given 2 1/2 years ago when our daughter was born. She's not interested in being potty trained yet and the other one smelled so bad we had to do something. We had the Genie that twisted on the top with the lid closed (not the original that you twisted with the lid open). When the lid on that one was open, sometimes it flipped the whole thing over, it was so heavy. Version II is easy to open, easy to operate, easy to clean out, and doesn't smell anywhere near as bad as the one we had. You get a little whiff if you don't get the diaper in fast, but getting it in fast is pretty easy to do. The cutter works great on the II - I had to use scissors on the old system because the button cutter just didn't cut it (literally). I wish there was an easier way to carry the unit and that it didn't open in the middle, but I'll take that over the old unit anyday. Oh, and Borax really does help cut the smell in the container if there is some when the pooey diapers are taken out. I wish I'd discovered that 2 1/2 years ago!
