Customer Review: Best Diaper Pail Out There
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow...
Let me say it again...WOW!
I am a stay-at-home mom with 2 daughters: a 3 month old and a 2-1/2 year old, so I change a LOT of diapers every day. My 3 month old is breastfed so her diapers don't really stink yet, but my toddler's diapers not only stink...they STANK, so let me just tell you, I know what I'm talking about when I say that this diaper pail REALLY WORKS at eliminating odors!!!
I have had first-hand experience with the Diaper Dekor and the Safety 1st Neat! disposal systems. I have close friends who have used the original Diaper Genie and the Diaper Champ, so I'd like to share a few pros and cons of each system, so that I can fully explain just how AWESOME this one is.

-Diaper Dekor:
Pros: pretty (as much as a diaper pail can be), easy to use, doesn't waste bag, large capacity - doesn't need to be emptied too often
Cons: doesn't hold in odors (the last straw was when the trapdoor broke off completely...), needs a special liner, safety hazard (it's SO easy to use that even a toddler can open it...and the bag cutter is right in the front of the door...), most expensive of the diaper pails

-Neat! by Safety 1st:
Pros: really holds in odors, toddler-proof, pretty large capacity
Cons: needs a special liner, ugly, loud/clunky to use, wastes some bag

-Original Diaper Genie (this is second-hand knowledge that I have gathered from friends):
Pros: Hmmm....good question :)
Cons: needs a special liner, annoying to use and mechanism often stops working, cutter gets dull quickly, wastes a LOT of bag, doesn't hold in odors

-Diaper Champ (this is a combination of first-hand experience (I used one at a friend's house) and second-hand knowledge that I have gathered from friends who have one:
Pros: you can use your own trash bags, large capacity, relatively inexpensive
Cons: doesn't hold in odors very well, not very sanitary (diaper touches the pail directly before it's dropped down into the base), toddlers keep playing with it (icky)

-DIAPER GENIE II
Pros: holds in odors GREAT, doesn't waste bag AT ALL, easy to use, pretty (for a diaper pail), easy to empty (but not so easy that a toddler can do it)
Cons: needs special liner (but the liners last a long time since bag isn't wasted), capacity is a bit on the small side (but that's because I have 2 kids in diapers who are at home during the day)

Bottom line is that the Diaper Genie folks really must have paid attention to people's complaints about previous diaper pail systems, because almost every problem I've ever experienced has pretty much been corrected with this pail. It is incredible and I would recommend it to anyone with a baby!

Customer Review: Better than the original but still some design flaws
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm really surprised by all of the rave reviews of this product as I don't feel it lives up to the hype. I supposed if you are scoring it on improvements alone you can give it more stars, but in some ways it falls short of the original. I'll give you a pro and con list so you can make an informed decision.

Pro:
It holds more than the original (I think).

Con:
Odor control: Good until you put in another diaper and get a nose full of the previous diaper. The original Genie twisted between each diaper so you didn't smell the previous diaper. This one spring locks to an open bag so you could potentially have several stewing bad diapers inside.

Cutting Mechanism: Better than the very bad original model but still needs help. You cut it by pushing the bag bundle against a blade slot inside the pail. The blade is only on one side so you have to push just right against the blade to get a good cut. It often requires a couple of passes. A better design would have been two counteropposing blades for a perfect cut no matter how you put the bag in.

New Bags: This was a blatant money making scheme. Since you use less of the bags because you don't twist in between each diaper they gave you less bags. They could have easily designed this with the old bag system which would have allowed you to go even longer prior to changing bags. Clearly that would not have allowed enough bag replacements so they force you to buy the new smaller one. The bags are also not scented like the stage 2's were and are not as readily available in supermarkets like the originals.

Unsanitary: This unit seems less sanitary than the original as you have to physically push the bad diaper through the spring loaded trap. The spring trap is firm to keep the smell in but as a result you have to touch the interior of the bag push it through. If you could just drop it in without having to push it through it would have been better. Ever have those really full diapers? Picture one of those and then push it into spring loaded trap door. If there is any resistance from previous diapers pushing back from the other side (and there usually is) your full diaper tends to squirt!

Thus my quest for the perfect diaper pail continues. This is my fourth pail and all seem to fall short. My daughter will likely be potty trained by the time I find one that really works well. I'm currently testing the First Years Odor Free pail and it seems to be working better.

Customer Review: Very user friendly, as long as you aren't an idiot
Summary: 5 Stars

I read some of the other reviews, and I felt that I HAD to write a review of my own. Yes, I own the product. I bought it with my own money the day my daughter came home (technically, I sent my husband to Babies R Us, but let's move on), and I do not work for any company affiliated with the Diaper Genie. Having said all that...

1. If you cannot open the Diaper Genie one handed, and shove a diaper that you SHOULD have folded up into a neat little package into the said Genie...you are an idiot. Sorry. It is NOT DIFFICULT to open the Genie with one hand, and shove the diaper in with the same hand. That leaves a free hand to keep on the baby. Of course there will be dirtier than usual diapers that can not be folded into a neat little package, but overall, come on. It is really not that difficult.

2. Yes, buying their brand of refill bags does get pricey, but you should have thought about that before you bought the Genie. If it was a gift, fine. You still should have priced the refills before getting into an uproar and complaining on Amazon.

3. Mine has never smelled, and my daughter is 10 months old. Thats why there is a lid, and the bag that contains all the smelley diapers...it keeps smells at bay. Let's think about this for a minute...if you use a regular garbage can with a lid, every time you open that lid, it will smell, correct? The Diaper Genie seals the hole closed, so in theory, odors should not seep out. If you use a regular trash can, it will smell. In theory.

4. Yes, a diaper sausage is really gross to see, but it also fascinates me at the same time. Whatever.

Come on people. Nothing is perfect. The Diaper Genie is a pretty genius product, IMHO. But some of the complaints on here - whoa! Just take a minute to woo-sah, and everything will be better. Overall, this is a great product, it is a very simple design, very user friendly, and is really not that critical to waste precious minutes of your life complaining about on Amazon.

I know that sounds a tad strong... but after being super 'cheap' with baby #1, (as in not competing to buy every little baby gadget advertised my way...) I did consistently hear many good things about this contraption. Its worth every penny spent on it, even the refills. How did I manage baby # 1 without this item??
Unfortunately I never found coupons for the refills as another lucky reviewer had... but they are only about 6 dollars and DO last a long time. (I belive its about 180 diapers) But thats 180 'baby size' diapers, not size 4 and up, mind you. More on that.
Our family moved from a nice sized 3 bdrm cape style home to a small 2 bdrm rental when we moved states (due to a job change) and so with a [...]and new baby on the way I knew Id need an item like this. As it turns out, the baby is now 8 months old and the 3.5 yr old is STILL not potty trained. And so Ive been using this before baby 2 arrived. Now I change several diapers a day with both kids and honestly I dont know where Id be without it. It looks more complicated to operate than it really is. (I made hubby incharge of it while I was post-surgery) But now Ive mastered it and what a difference to keep that horrendous odor out of your home. Just as women in the 50s wondered how mothers managed with out items like a 'washer / dryer' us parents now are probably thinking the same thing about the diaper genie II. I know I am! It is however an extermely popular item. 2 of my nearest WalMarts ran out of the refills 2x in the last 3 months... so I had to order them online and when they came back in stock in the stores..I stocked up too, worrying the great diaper genie II refill famine may occur again;) All I can say is, if you have a baby on the way, be sure to put this thing at the top of your essentials list!

Customer Review: There are so many better options
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this product thinking I could use it for two purposes: diapers and cat waste. Unfortunately, the Diaper Genie 2 failed on both accounts.

First, to dispose of the waste and "lock" the odor away, you're required to push it down past a very stiff lever. If you push too hard you'll break it (as my boyfriend discovered), but not hard enough and you end up with your trash trapped between the lever and the side of the can.

The smell is decently contained, but no better than other products that are easier to use, such as the Playtex Diaper Genie Twist-Away Pail System or the Baby Trend Diaper Champ.

If you're looking for cat waste disposal, do NOT choose this product. The opening on the top is too small for any normal litter scoop, so you'll end up gambling and attempting to toss the litter clumps into the can - NOT pretty. In addition, you'll have to develop some way of pushing them down past the lever. I ended up putting the waste into plastic grocery bags and THEN putting it into the diaper genie - so what's the point?? I think the only product on the market that works even marginally well is the Litter Locker Plus, which I'm going to write a review of when I finish this one.

OVERALL: even without the pet litter issues I find that pushing my arm elbow-deep into a pail of garbage is too gross to make it worth it - I'd rather take the garbage out more often. Simply buying a lidded garbage can and sticking an air freshener to the inside of the lid is easier and more pleasant than using this product.
