Customer Review: Too difficult for a newborn to suck.....no good for the first month at least. Summary: 1 StarsInitially, I thought these angled bottles make a lot of sense so I put different sizes into our registry. However, when our baby girl (1 week old) first tried to suck the milk out from the bottle, it did not come out. My husband had activated the vent and did everything according to the instructions. He thought the holes were not big enough since he did not see any on the nipple, so he put more holes on them but still nothing came out. He finally found out the way that these bottles work are not the same as a traditionally bottle does. The hole will not open unless pressure is applied against it and hole will get sealed back again when released. Baby has to use their tongue to push against the nipples in order to open up the hole. For a newborn infant, it is too difficult for them to figure out how to get the milk out especially if you are bottle feeding only. Luckily we had two Avent bottles (with the traditionally hole idea) so she is doing very well with the Avent bottles and she still loves them a lot. We ended up returning the unused VentAir bottles and got a lots of AVENT bottles but still stuck with the opened ones. I do not recommend these 'difficult' bottles for newborn. Baby should not need to 'think' how to get the milk out.
For leaking problem, we do not have any issue with the Avent bottles. When it leaks, it is usually because the nipples have not been properly placed (push all the way though the ring) or the ring has not been tightly screwed. We also found out if you use a warmer to warm the bottle, you have to unscrew the ring once and screw it all tight again after the warmer. It is because the theory of heat with expense the plastic bottle which creates a gap between the ring, nipples and the bottle neck. This works 99% for us with no leak.
We are the fans of the AVENT bottles.
Customer Review: Can You Say "Love It" Summary: 5 StarsI absolutely love these bottles. When I brought my newborn home I wasn't sure what to use. I knew that Playtex was good but I had problems telling how many oz. of water was in the bottle as according to the scoops of formula. When I found the VentAire collection I thought it was great because both my husband and myself had problems with ear infections as children. He refused to take the regular VentAire so I tried the Natural Shape and have never gone back. It is the best bottle that I have ever seen.
Customer Review: These are my favorite bottles so far but...... Summary: 3 StarsFirst let me say that I have tried many different bottles.
When my first child was born a few years ago, I used Advent bottles. I didn't like the straight shape, although cleaning was easier and I loved the wide neck. Unfortunately if you don't screw the top on just right on those things - whammo - formula/breast milk/juice all over you and your close neighbors! (I don't even want to mention what this can mean when you are sitting on an airplane). And let me just say that I could never quite figure out when this was going to happen. There was absolutlely NO indication that the top was not on correctly. It looked right. It felt right. After being completely disgusted with the unpredictability of those, I switched to a bent-necked J&J bottle that is no longer being made. I liked those, but hated cleaning the narrow bottle - it never seemed to GET clean.
With my next child, I chose the playtex ventaire natural shape. There are several things I love about them:
1. Wide bottles are a MUST for ease of cleaning. You don't even need a special brush which is nice when you are travelling/camping/backpacking
2. I agree with some other reviewers that having all those separate pieces actually makes cleaning easier and as long as you have a little dishwasher cage to collect them all it's not a big deal.
3. The crook-neck design is great for the carseat/stroller/whatever.
What I hate about these bottles:
1. What's with the cover? Can anyone else get them to stay on? I simply abandoned them completely after wrestling with them for a few weeks with no luck
2. They do leak sometimes. It has only happened a few times but when it does - Yikes! Another reviewer mentioned a slow leak that happens over time in your car/diaper bag and that has definitely happened to me. Perhaps only 10 times in the year and a half I've been using them, but STILL annoying. and MESSY and what happens when you only brought that one bottle and there it has spilled all over the floor of your car?
3. After about 11 months of use, all of the bottles started cracking in the dishwasher and they all had to be thrown away and replaced. Which come to think of it could have coincided with the slow leak issue...Now we just put the bottles on the upper rack (was this in the instructions to begin with?) and haven't had a problem yet (been about 6 months).
4. My son bites through the nipples and I have trouble finding replacements. Babies R Us is the only store around that carries the nipples (not Target, not the Grocery store) and then playtex has so many designs, it's tough to figure out which one you really need. Made all the more challenging by screaming baby and impatient 5 year old. Right now I am frantically searching the internet for suppliers as BabiesRus is out of stock and I only have 4 functioning nipples.
With all of that said...I really love the concept and wish they would solve their quality and availibility issues.
Customer Review: Beware! These bottles leak Summary: 3 StarsGreat bottles, but they leak. And you have to get the rubber "gasket" in just right to make sure that the bottom doesn't leak. Also, there are many little parts to wash. Good side is, they do decrease the amount of air that enters your little one's stomach. And the nipples are great. It will not cause nipple confusion if you're breast feeding. The ergonomic shape is great.
