Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent Express Microwave Sterilizer

Customer Review: Streamlines the pumping process
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought the sterilizer because it was taking so long to clean my breastpump parts & bottles. I am breastfeeding and not working right now, but want my daughter to be able to take a bottle on occasion. I don't have a dishwasher so that wasn't an option, and boiling the parts took too long - when I was trying to find a quiet time to pump I never had time to boil the parts.

The sterilizer is very simple - you just put the parts in it, add water (they want you to use distilled water, which you can buy at the drugstore) and put it in the microwave. The only reasons I don't give it 5 stars are the need for distilled water and that you have to figure out how strong your microwave is and not all microwaves tell you their power levels. Altogether it is useful and definitely helps with the pumping.

Customer Review: Expensive, troublesome...
Summary: 3 Stars

Good concept for a steamer, but here is what I've found:

1. Lid is very difficult to put on and remove. I've broken a few nails trying to pry the lid off!
2. All items must be dried after steaming.
3. Only holds a few bottles at a time - a hassle when a newbown eats 10 times daily!
4. A dishwaher works just as well (since all bottles and nipples have to be washed before you steam them anyway).

Now I wash everything in the diswasher then boil everything once a week. Boiling bottles and nipples takes the same amount of time (around 5 minutes), and once the items are drained, they seem to dry much faster because the hot water evaporates so quickly. Also, maybe it's psychological, but I feel like the bottles/nipples are much cleaner after I boil them!

Customer Review: a MUST for formula fed babies
Summary: 5 Stars

Pediatricians and formula manufacturers recommend that you sterilize bottles and nipples that are used with formula. Why put the time and effort into sterilizing the hard way, with pots, pans, and boiling water, when you can do it in 5 minutes in the microwave?!

We've been using the product since the day we brought our twins home from the hospital, and it is one of the few products I recommend as necessary "luxuries" due to its overwhelming ease and convenience. I have used Avent, Playtex, Podee, and Gerber bottles in it with no problems.

Update 11/28/05: The twins are 10 months old and we're still thrilled with this product. We use it 1-2 times a day. In addition to their bottles, I've now been putting their Playtex sippy cups in the sterilizer, and they fit fine!

Customer Review: Love...Love...Love It!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one product that I use at least twice everyday. Avent bottles were all that my son would use. At first I did the whole boil the water on the stove bit but soon realized that I had other things to do in life than sterilize bottles! When I pumped, I was able to fit the parts of my Medula pump in the sterilizer and nuk them also! People are shocked when they see how easy it is to sterilize bottles. I have even had people tell me that they don't use Avent bottles because they don't want to sterilize bottles. With this nice little invention, sterilizing is a snap! Plus, it comes with two 9 ounce bottles--a nice little bonus! I have been using this sterilizer for over 5 months twice a day and it still looks the same as it did the day I bought it. Overall, a convenient must-have!!!!!

Customer Review: Very Convenient and Fast
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally didn't buy or register for a sterilizer, but after having to boil bottles the old fashioned way at least twice a day, I started to wonder if there was an easier way of cleaning my daughter's bottles (we simply don't run our dishwasher that often, plus I wasn't keen on the possible detergent build up that might have occurred). I discovered this system by searching on Amazon and immediately purchased it. With the two bonus bottles, this has definitely paid off during the first week of usage. It is easy and makes sterilizing a snap. I can have a whole set of bottles cleaned and ready to go within ten minutes (seven minutes to sterilize and another three for cool down time) I even throw her pacifiers into it.

Definitely something to consider when purchasing the Avent bottles.
