Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent Express Microwave SterilizerCustomer Review: more downside than upside Summary: 2 Stars
I am breastfeeding but offer my baby bottles every now and then. This was pricey - there was another brand that was much less, but this one attracted me because it holds the Avent pump pieces. Well, this just means that there are some slots that the pump clicks into. I have not bothered with that 'feature' since the pump sits in it fine even if you just lay it on the rack (ie the pump will fit in any sterilizer!). My biggest peeve with this is that the bottles and pump are covered with condensation when you take them out - if you leave them on a bottle dryer it takes more than 24 hours to dry them. I rinsed this every time I used it but there are water stains in the bottom still - it really needs to be scrubbed out. It is just making extra work! I am putting this away after using it for two weeks since my Doctor said that it is really not necessary (the dishwasher or hot soapy water are fine, he said). So for me this was an expensive countertop decoration.
Customer Review: You will need this item! Summary: 5 Stars
Since I breastfeed my baby and planned to pump only occasionally, I wasn't sure how much use I would get out of this item, but it has turned out to be such a time saver. My baby developed thrush in his mouth at two weeks old and I soon got it in my breasts as well. It has been really resistant and he had it for two months. During that time his doctor said we need to sterilize everything that is used for feeding or sucking on after every use. I tried boiling everything a couple of times but it took so long! I use this sterilizer two or three times a day and it saves me so much time. It is simple to use and works great with all my Medela pump parts, bottles, nipples, pacifiers, nipple shields, breast shells- whatever I have had to use. Thrush seems to be getting more common with the overuse of antibiotics, so I'm sure there's a good chance of most babies getting it at some point. If you have this product, it will make sterilizing easy and quick.
Customer Review: Sterilizer vs. Dishwasher Summary: 4 Stars
In reading the reviews from those who feel that a dishwasher works just as well as this sterilizer, I wanted to add my view. I live in an area where water is expensive. We ration water during the summer and have set schedules of when we can water our yards or wash our cars, etc. So running the dishwasher vs. using 7 ounces of water to sterilize my bottles is a no-brainer.
We were using the Medela steam bags before I found this, which only steam 2 bottles at most at a time. Then I couldn't find any replacement bags, and they are supposed to only be good for a limited amount of uses.
I have gotten a lot of use out of this sterilizer and I like its convenience. We didn't start out with a lot of bottles, and this was perfect because I could have new bottles ready in minutes.
Steam does stay in the bottles afterward, but we air them out for several minutes and it dissipates quickly.
Customer Review: Great if you need it... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great product, if you need it. I have a now 3 year old and twin 4 month olds. I have only used the sterilizer about 15 times. I bought it when I bought the Avent Isis Pump when my first child was about 6 months. I needed the manual pump to take on vacation with me (smaller, takes up less room in the suitcase). I never took the sterlizer out of my home, it is portable, but it is bigger than "travel sized". I only used it when I sterilized the pump and once to sterilize the old bottles for the new babies. My dishwasher (which I use everyday) and a dishwasher basket ($2 or less) work better than a $30 sterilizer. When my twins were born 6 weeks premature, I used the electric Avent sterlizer at the hospital for the pump pieces (they provided one while the babies were in NICU). Now I just throw everything in the dishwasher baskets and turn on the dishwasher.
Overall I liked the product, but I really didn't need it.
Customer Review: LOVE IT!! Couldn't live without it!! Summary: 5 Stars
Being a first time Mom, you get blasted with all these lists of things that you "need." I didn't know what I really needed and didn't need. At first, I thought this sterilizer was a waste of money. However, after having the baby, I was unable breastfeed- couldn't get my baby to "latch on"-but wanted her to have breastmilk. I pumped exclusively for the frist 6 weeks. This sterilizer saved my life. I used the Avent adapter for the Medela electric breast pump and was going through two bottles every 2-3 hours. One would store the milk in the fridge and the other would get sterilized for the next round. I loved the fact that this is so quick, you can do it even in your sleep! It also comes with 4 of the bigger 9 ounce AVENT bottles so you are really getting your money's worth. Now, that I am not pumping, I still use it to sterilize bottles, pacifiers, and her plastic rings and keys that she LOVES to suck on. Good luck!!
