Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent Express Microwave SterilizerCustomer Review: Super! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a truly wonderful product! I got mine on sale at a local Target store, and it included 4 9-oz Avent bottles as a bonus, so it was really a great deal. :)
I was pleasantly surprised to see how EASY it was to use this sterilizer. I tried boiling huge pots to sterilize all the bottles, pacifiers and breast pump accessories, and it took forever to boil and turned out to be too costly. This sterilizer accomodates all my Medela pump attachments, Dr. Brown's bottles (that have 5 pieces each!) and a few pacifiers easily. All it needs is 200 ml/7 oz of water and a microwave, and in 4-6 minutes you get it done! Since it's SOOO EASY to use, I also sterilize all my daughter's plastic toys in it. It doesn't take up much space on the kitchen counter (in fact I store mine on top of the microwave since I'm using it several times a day). The greatest thing about this sterelizer is that it gives me peace of mind that whatever goes into my 2-month old daughter's mouth is clean :)
Customer Review: Great for those who don't run dishwasher every day Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this before my son was born and now that he's here, it is a lifesaver! My husband and I believe in the power of good old-fashioned "elbow grease" and we wash our dishes by hand and use our dishwasher as a drying rack (unless we cook a really big or involved meal).
The baby is our first, so we don't really make enough dishes to run the dishwasher all the time, anyway.
This sterilizer allows us to sterilize everything for baby's feeding without having to waste all the water used to run a full dishwasher cycle. I especially like that you can use it any way, you don't have to put everything into the little pre-designated slots if you don't want to. When dealing with a newborn, sometimes it's all you can do to get all the bottles, rings, nipples, etc. piled into the thing before you have to tend to the baby.
Be careful though when you first take this out of the microwave. The sterilizer itself can get hot enough to make you wince.
Customer Review: More convenient than boiling your own pot of water Summary: 4 Stars
Even though we're not using the Avent bottles, we still use this sterilizer with our Playtex breast milk storage system and Playtex bottles. Works well enough. Previous to this, we were using the sterlization bags that came with our Medela breast pump.
Pros -
Cleans up in a jiffy.
Holds a decent amount of equipment all at once. I can sterilize 4 bottles, 8 Drop-In rings and 4 nipples at the same time.
Seems to hold up well over time.
Cons -
You still need to clean your equipment before placing it in this sterilizer. This might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised. We came back one evening and the babysitter had used this to clean some bottles and nipples. The little droplets of milk left on the rings and nipples created annoying and very permanent white stains behind.
You need to leave it in the microwave for a couple minutes, otherwise you'll burn your hands opening the top.
Customer Review: Not really necessary Summary: 4 Stars
The steam sterilizer is definitely easy and convenient. Just pour 200 mls of water, add your microwaveable bottles, nipples, breast-pump parts, etc...place in the microwave and a few short minutes later, you've got sterile supplies. This is excellent if you don't own a dishwasher, as stated by a previous reviewer. However, if you have access to a dishwasher, this gadget is just a gadget. I find it takes more time and effort to retrieve the sterilizer, set up the bottles, nipples etc... than to just pop it into the dishwasher. (This is especially true when you have you're a first-time mother overwhelmed with a new baby ~TRUST ME on this one.) If you have a healthy full-term baby, it's not really necessary to sterilize items everytime, a run through the hot water cycle in the dishwasher is sufficient. If you don't have a dishwasher, then by all means I recommend it. If you do, skip it. I've only used this once, and since then I've simply used the dishwasher.
Customer Review: Pretty good for the money Summary: 4 Stars
I will admit that I had absolutely no desire to sterilize bottles the old fashioned way (boiling water in a pot on the stove) so when I saw this product over seven years ago I bought one immediately. I loved that it was so effortless! PAY ATTENTION to the instructions that tell you how much water to use based on your microwaves wattage. No one wants to wonder if the bottles are sterilized or so-so when it comes to their child, so read the instructions. I also purchased another when my second daughter was born because I gave my sister the first one. My only issue is that because of its small size (it has to fit in the microwave after all!!!!), you have to really stack the bottles, nipples, etc. in a way that utilizes all of the available space. Once again, the instructions clearly tell you the best way to stack. So, if in your sleep deprived, hormonal state you actually manage to read that stupid small instruction booklet you will save yourself a lot of heartache.
