Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent Express Microwave SterilizerCustomer Review: A great convenience Summary: 5 Stars
True - it is not a big deal to boil water. However, with all that there is going on in caring for a baby, it is easy to forget that the boiling water is going, or not be able to respond to the timer going off.... and soon you have warped your bottles, nipples or breast pump parts.
With this, you have a few simple steps, and you are done. Best yet, if you forget this in the microwave, it only helps you by cooling the whole setup off.
Another reviewer commented that this is more work than the dishwasher. While this is true - it is a huge waste of energy to run a dishwasher that is not full. Therefore, you are either going to waste energy, or have to wait until you have a full load. For us, the latter was never an option.
This tool has enough space to accommodate our bottles (from Playtex, not advent) and breast pump parts.
Finally, with the ease of use, it is easy to overdo it and sterilize more than you have to. For me, that is vastly preferable to under doing it while waiting for a dishwasher load, or due to the annoyance of boiling.
Customer Review: I like it Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter was born at 37 weeks and even though it was not necessary to sterlize the bottles every single time, I'm paranoid and would much much prefer to do so. Especially after she went for a few days without a bowel movement and had some days of 3-5 BMs a day! I was never sure of the cause and decided to be safe than sorry. We were supplementing her with formula even though she was BF and sterlizing the bottles and all the parts was a pain the old fashioned way, just because I had to be there in front of the boiling pot waiting for my baby to wake up.
The microwave sterlizer made sterlizing much much easier. I can now sterlize in under 10 min (4 minutes for the microwave and about 4-5 minutes for it to 'cool down') and be safe and sure. I don't think I'll replace this with using a dishwasher because - I'd never know if particles of food would stick to the bottles, I'm not a big dishwasher user anyway and running it just for the bottles is a waste of water and energy. The microwave sterlizer is one extra bit of item in the kitchen, but I'd not replace it for anything.
Customer Review: Wonderful Timesaver Summary: 5 Stars
My wife pumps once a day to have some backup for times when she cannot nurse. We started off with sterilizing the equipment on the stove (we don't run the dishwasher often enough to do it that way) which has been a pretty time consuming process. The Microwave Steam Sterilizer makes taking care of the pump and bottles a snap.
After pumping, I use the steriliser dome as a basin to wash the Isis Pump and bottles in soapy water. I then transfer the rinsed bottles to the steriliser, add the water and put the whole thing into the Microwave. Next day, first thing in the morning I simply punch in 4:00 and let it run and cool down before reassembling the pump. Sterilising takes no effort at all.
If you run your dishwasher daily, you probably don't need to sterilize separately. Otherwise this will save you a lot of time.
BTW, this is not something we would have thought of to register for, and my wife initially looked at me funy when I brought it home. We're now both very glad to have this handy tool.
Customer Review: Great but be careful what you put into it Summary: 4 Stars
It works great. I wouldn't worry about the condensation on it, I forgot to empty it after removing my items and left it sitting with water in it overnight (and it wasn't completely sealed) and it still smelled sterile the next day. I had used the Medela Spring Express pump I got at the hospital and was sterilizing all pieces but the spring in this. It melted the handle (which probably didn't really need to be sterilized, as it does not come in contact with the milk. I'll put other brand baby bottles in it, but besides that I only trust it with Avent products (but other items don't need to be sterilized as often so the traditional way would probably work). It's convenient for mothers who have other children running around (I'm on my second, though I do wish I had this for my daughter, I was more "anal" about sterilizing things with her as she was my first). Also note, according to a book compiled by pediatricians (can't remember the name offhand), they suggest you sterilize bottles and pacifiers until the baby is 6 months old.
Customer Review: great sterilizer for everything! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this sterilizer after the birth of my daughter and trying to wash all my avent bottles and nipples. I don't know about everyone else, but I only run my dishwasher at most every other day, and I didn't have enough bottles to last that long when she was eating every couple of hours. Plus, I find that in the dishwasher little bits of food and guck get stuck in them, especially the nipples. The sterilizer works great, simply, and fast! You, obviously need to at least rinse the bottles and nipples before putting them in. I washed all my bottles with soap before putting them in the sterilizer just in case.
Also, now that my daughter has moved on to sippy cups, I use the sterilizer to clean those annoying spill proof valves that are impossible to get clean and aren't supposed to go in the dishwasher.
I did use it occaisionally for my breast pump parts as well and it worked great for them, I just didn't get to breast feed for very long :(
It saves time, energy and water! A great product!!
