Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent Express Microwave Sterilizer

Customer Review: This is a great product
Summary: 5 Stars

When our son was born 5 weeks premature, our doctor told us that sterilizing was a necessity for the first few months because of his susecptibility to infection. We bought this sterilizer and it certainly does the trick.

Whatever you think of Avent bottles, this is a great sterilizer that works for *all* bottles, pacifiers, teething toys, breast pump attachments, and anything that can be steam sterilized. The only difficult thing was figuring out the wattage on our microwave (it was on the back panel) which determines how long you have to "nuke" the sterilizer.

It is small enough to make it fairly simple to travel with, and large enough to hold four small (8 oz) bottles or two bigger ones (16 oz).

The standard filling-out-the-registry question:
Do you *need* a sterilizer? Not always. Our doctor said it was necessary for pre-term babies, but in other cases a dishwasher will go a long way towards keeping things clean; especially if you have well water and enough bottles to keep you while your washer goes through the cycle. [If cost is a factor], then there are probably other things you should be spending money on. But we found that it was well worth the money in terms of time and convenience.

Customer Review: Great time saver!
Summary: 5 Stars

At first I thought this was a big gimmick, but after I used it a couple of times I decided it was wonderful. Microwave steam sterilizing is SO much easier than boiling things, and you don't have the risk of forgetting your bottles on the stove and burning them up (this has happened to several of my friends). The big plus that I never realized, though, is that you don't get the mineral deposits with microwave sterilizing that you get with boiling. We have relatively hard water, and when I boil bottles there is always a thin white film of minerals left on the bottle that I have to clean off - it's a real pain. Microwave sterilizing doesn't leave that residue. Overall I thought this was a great product.

If you're in a pinch for money, I'm not sure that you need to have this particular container to microwave things in - it has a nice rack and directions about how long to microwave and how much water to put in, all of which are helpful, but I'm not really sure that you couldn't accomplish the same thing with a large tupperware container, for example. The rack is nice, though, and that would be an advantage of this container. You have to decide if the rack is worth the extra money or not.

Customer Review: Great for the family without a dishwasher!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this product because I found that boiling the bottles didn't get them very clean- it didn't help that I would forget about the bottles, and a film would develop on them if left in while the water cooled off. With this sterilizer, I can clean several bottles, rings, nipples, sealing discs, and the pump with ease. And if you forget about them after the microwave stops, everything in the sterilizer stays sterile for three hours (even I normally remember them by then!)
Of course, using a dishwasher is much easier- and the dishwasher gets everything dry. But since I don't have a dishwasher, nor do I have the kicthen space to get one, this is a great option. When everything is sterilized, I dry it all off with Viva paper towels- they are soft like a towel, yet don't create the smudges that a towel can. Plus, since paper towels are single-use, they are cleaner than even the cleanest cloth towel.
If you do have an automatic dishwasher, this may not be the product for you- unless you would prefer to clean the bottles without having to wait to get a full load of dishes in the dishwasher. But for me this is great- no more boiling!

Customer Review: A MUST HAVE!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this sterlizer! It is so convenient especially when you dont run the dishwasher every day! The price is a little high, which is why i bought a used on on ebay. Best purchase i have made! I sterlize all my bottles in it, and pacifiers and even some toys. However, when i bought it, it did not include instructions, i later got them off of avent.com when i got a horrible steam burn from the product. That was probably just a dumb blonde moment on my part though! I was in a hurry and not paying attention and the steam hit my hand. BE VERY CAREFUL! you will want to use and oven mit or towel to take out of microwave and keep your face and hands away when opening it.
This sterlizer is great! i would reccomend it to everyone! So far i have been able to fit everything from avent bottles to large 9 oz bottles in it, and even the parts to my gerber breast pump. I look forward to using this for years to come!
I found that the lid works really well for washing bottles too, instead of filling a sink full of water! I can wash them in the soap and set them in the sink for rinsing, instead of using both sides of the sink.

Customer Review: Wish I'd Had it From the Start!!

When I had my daughter I planned to boil everything and didn't even look into sterilizers. What a mistake! When you're pumping, using bottles, and have a baby who likes her binkies, you're in for a lot of washing and boiling. Not only is it time-consuming, but you can't just pop it in the microwave and walk away like with this sterilizer. You have to either set a time or stay close by...I've got the melted, burned up pacifiers to prove it! It was easy to say, "Oh, this nipple's been through the dishwasher, it's sterile enough." But soon my baby had thrush, and I had to either pump or use formula.I was boiling like a maniac trying to keep the thrush at bay. Finally I got this sterilizer, but that was long after I'd had to give up breastfeeding and we were close to using sippy cups. This sterilizer is so easy to use and gave me such peace of mind. I wish I had invested in it before I even had my baby...but I know that when I have another I'll be sterilizing everything! I'm looking forward to just moving everything straight from the dishwasher into the microwave and walking away. No more boiling water for us!
