Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent Digital Baby Monitor with Zero-Interference DECT TechnologyCustomer Review: Useless as a baby monitor Summary: 1 Stars
This monitor has a serious flaw. Initially, we were using an inexpensive Fisher-Price monitor. The monitor picked up cars going by, sirens, etc and we thought that was too much. But, we heard everything that went on in the crib. If the baby gurgled, we could hear it. We knew when the baby was getting ready to wake up by the rustling. Then we got the Phillips monitor. First off, $200 is robbery. But I paid it. New parent and all. THe monitor has whats called a "gate": it doesn't transmit to the receiver until a certain threshhold is reached. What is that threshold? Its your baby wailing. Sure its silent, and sure it didn't interfere with my wireless internet router but neither does the cheapo monitor I use and that silence is a bit unnerving. You can tell whats going on with your baby by hearing its sounds. The lullabies? Cheap dinky sounds like on cheap toys. The lights? useless. The thermometer? Mounted underneath so that you get a reading of the shelf. Parents, use the cheapo monitors and spend the money on something that will actually benefit your child. This is a waste of your time. I returned it after two days. Its much nicer to anticipate your baby waking than to hear it in full distress, wailing away, while you run up the stairs to find tears streaming down its cute little face.
Customer Review: very expensive but does work well Summary: 4 Stars
purchased this monitor prior to my son's birth, he's now 10 weeks old. all positive with a couple exceptions. the batteries on the parent unit don't last as long as i would like. (my previous monitor with my first child was a sony and it went longer off the charger) i like the display (although the display only lights when you push the power button for a second) it is not continually lit. i like the size of the parent unit, very small. it would be nice to have a second charger base. one to keep downstairs and one in the bedroom so that if the charge runs out while downstairs you could recharge there. (the sony had a rechargable plug not a dock, so that was more friendly to carry back and forth upstairs) i thought the temperature feature was kind of silly, but i've actually used it quite a lot because my sons bedroom is the coolest room upstairs and we've been having problems with our heating system. there is NO STATIC sounds whatsoever (although that was the case with the sony too) was it worth so much more money, we paid around $99 for the sony. we did have the antenna damaged on that and had to purchase a second set, so i guess we spent $200 on the sony unit. i've been happy with it, but agree that it is expensive.
Customer Review: Worth the cost Summary: 5 Stars
We had an 8-yr-old baby monitor that had an intercom feature we had come to consider essential. But the unit we had from our 1st baby had a broken button on the receiver and buzzed like crazy all the time so we wanted to replace it. This was the only monitor that was 900mhz (didn't want to interfere w/our 2.4 wireless network in the house, & more powerful signal is a bit scary to put by your heads as you sleep & overkill to boot) & also had an intercom feature. We have 3 children, 1 baby still in our room with us & 2 in their room down the hall. This is both highly sensitive to the slightest noise from their rm. and completely silent when there isn't any sound to broadcast. The remote features e.g. turning on lights or lullabies for the baby/child's room are neat & nice, the adjustable sensitivity is great- really will respond to the slightest sound if you have it at a lower sensitivity, or can be set to broadcast constantly & will do so w/o extra noise. The intercom is nice for letting a child know you're coming, or asking if they need you at all, or of course, playing around. Battery life has been fine but we hardly use the receiver out of the charger. Completely fulfills its claims.
Customer Review: A fantastic and reliable monitor. The others can't compare! Summary: 5 Stars
Several of our friends have Fisher Price monitors and other similar brands. Those other monitors were constantly recieving interference and broadcasting static. We heard of the Philips with DECT technology and read some great reviews. Let me say that the Philips with DECT is in a class all its own, along with the price. The monitor is outstanding and worth the 200 dollar price. This monitor, unlike other cheap monitors, is able to lock and keep one of 60 available channels. The technology is amazing! My wife and I have premie twins and keep a very close eye and ear on them. We are able to use the monitor and hear them even while in the shower, out infront of the house, or back by the pool! We can activate the nightlight, play lullabys, and adjust sensitivity all from the remote. The monitor even tells room temp and alarms if it gets too cold or hot! Take my advice and don't spend less money on the other analog/radio type monitors, the Philips is the one and only truly digital, interference free monitor available! Be sure to take the time to properly charge the included rechargable batteries and read the manual. Enjoy...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Customer Review: great baby monitor Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent monitor. We bought it to replace a different monitor that we had (a Sony)which did this horrible beeping noise every few seconds. I guess whoever designed it thought there should be an alert at the slightest interference, but how annoying! We love the Philips monitor. It is quiet (only makes noise when your baby makes noise). For instance, we run an air cleaner in our daughter's room to provide white noise so that she won't wake up when our other kids are noisy. This monitor is silent until our daughter starts crying, or babbling. Also, it has a neat feature -- you can use it as an intercom. If my husband is downstairs and I am in the baby's room, I can talk to him through the monitor, and he can respond to me by pushing a button and talking into the parent unit. The range seems to be excellent -- we have a large house and it works well from our upper floor down to the basement. I would definitely recommend this product. The only negative is the price -- very expensive!
