Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent 3 Pack 9oz BottlesCustomer Review: Lets compare Summary: 2 Stars
I am a department supervisor at a Babies R Us store and I am considered to be a baby product expert in my store. I have written a review about Avent bottles in the past but now I have discovered something new to add to that review. For the first time ever, I started researching parent satisfaction with the cheap Gerber bottles that we sell in our stores. I never paid them any attention in the past because I was focused on the "hot" bottle systems of our times. Although I am a Dr. Browns loyalist, I must say that Gerber seems to be just as good as Avent, if not better. I dont think that Avent is bad, I just think it is bad that people think it is the best bottle system in the world, and also that people are recommending them to friends all the time when they really are not that special and not worth the money. Every bottle system that Babies R Us sells has an "anti-colic" system built in. The whole point of anti colic systems is to find a way to get air in to the bottle to replace the liquid that is coming out, while at the same time sending that air far away from the babies mouth. Avent, gerber, evenflo and playtex all have systems that can and will fail much of the time. They all work very comperably but Avent is the only one that has leaking problems often. There is really no point in spending the money on Avent when you can get the same thing for less. I would rather see a guest of my store spend $10 total for cheap gerber bottles than $40 for Avent. I just feel like I am ripping them off otherwise. If anyone would like a detailed description of the anti colic systems used by all of the bottles at BRU, please e-mail me and I will write you back with lots of information to make your choice easier. Customer Review: Baby swallows too much air!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I started my newborn out using the Avent bottles. After a few weeks, she began crying alot. You could hear the gas moving in her tummy, and every time her tummy would grumble, she would pull her legs up and shriek in pain. She would also pass gas constantly. It was so difficult to feed her because she would cough, spit and cry the whole time. Then she would be miserable with gas pains for hours afterwards. I tried switching formulas - didn't work. Tried mylicon, Zantac, gripe water, bicycling her legs, etc. etc. etc... nothing worked. The pediatrician diagnosed her with colic and said there was nothing we could do, that she would outgrow it. Finally, we decided to switch bottles (I switched to Playtex nursers.) Instantly we noticed a difference! She was extremely quiet during feedings, didn't squirm or cry! She began ingesting almost TWICE as much formula per feeding(probably because her tummy was too full of gas to take in any more with the Avent bottles!) and would go longer between feeds. And when she swallowed, it sounded different - you could tell that she was no longer swallowing air! Something about those Avent bottles made her swallow tons of air. I think it was the suction that was created inside the bottle as she ate. With the Playtex nursers, the liner inside the bottle contracts as she eats, eliminating any air bubbles. She is a completely different baby now. She is more alert and interacts with us much more because she spends less of her awake time crying.
So if you decide to buy these bottles - BEWARE. If you are already using them and your baby has colic, switch immediately! Don't just assume that colic is "normal" or will be "outgrown." Babies don't deserve to suffer this way!!!!
Customer Review: I'm afraid these bottles DO leak Summary: 3 Stars
Initially I was going to side step this review - there's already over 1,100 reviews, roughly divided down the middle on whether these bottles leak or not. Some reviewers think that the bottles only leak because the users are not tightening down the nipple ring sufficiently.
So, I'll add my two cents. I am a man with large hands and I'm often asked to unscrew jar lids (or remove oil filters). I do find that when the Avent bottles leak, it often is just a case of tightening the nipple ring down a bit further. However, this can sometimes happen two or three times - by the time I've tightened the ring enough to stem the leak, my wife cannot undo it. And when the bottle leaks, it leaks all over the (now crying) baby (not to mention how stressful it is for women to waste their precious breastmilk). This seems excessive to me, for a device meant to be used primarily by a woman trying to feed her crying baby in the middle of the night. Therefore, I must conclude that this is a poor design.
I've noticed leakage much more with the 9 oz Avent bottle than with the 4 oz bottle (though they both share the same rim diameter and nipple size).
As for whether these bottles reduce colic and indigestion as claimed, I don't know. This is the only bottle I've used. It seems to work pretty well, though it is impossible to get the last few drops out (this is probably the case for all bottles). I do have to tip the bottle up very high to get the last bit of liquid out and this invariably causes some bubbles to form (this is probably expected in the design) and the baby to ingest some air. Thus, it's hard for me to say if it really does what it promises or is simply a well packaged poseur.
Customer Review: Leak often, some helpful tips! Summary: 3 Stars
I used these bottles with my first child. I noticed they leaked occasionally which was frustrating, but I refused to buy a whole new bottle system when my second child came along. I had about 17 bottles and liked having so many. I've been reading the reviews of how to keep it from leaking, and am going to try the advice of Sherri M. Cottle Chelsea, Alabama) Her review says she called the 1800 number to avent and was told what to do. You have to put the nipple in the white ring and then put the cap on that and then you put that on the bottle and tighten it by the CAP..not the white ring...If you tighten it with the clear platic cap the white ring will stop when its tight enough on its own, preventing the leakage. She swears this works!
After having to repack my diaper bag several times b/c of leaky bottles, I've learned to put the bottles in a ziploc bag. Then if it leaks, you don't have a messy, wet bag! (I like to put water in the bottle and carry 3 bottles in a large ziploc zipper bag and carry the formula in a dispenser.)
As far as colic, both my children weren't colicy. They were occasionally gassy. My sister-in-law gave me the advice to put a couple of Mylecon (or I used little tummies b/c it's cheaper)drops in each bottle to "get rid of the bubbles". I did this with both of my children the first few months. It worked for me.
Also, for the relief of my children's occasional gas, a friend recommended Baby's Bliss Gripe Water. I googled it and purchased it off of the internet. It's an herbal supplement used to ease the gas & stomach discomfort often associated with colic, hiccups, and teething. [...]
Customer Review: An "ok" bottle. Summary: 4 Stars
I heard so much about how good these bottles were when I was pregnant, I just had to have them. My daughter is now 5 months old, and I've used both the 4oz. and 9oz. bottles. They make it easy to prepare breastmilk and formula bottles, and easy to clean. My daughter seemed to take to the nipple right away (its like a breast nipple). The downside is that she is constantly spitting up (even after being burped/formula changed/not diagnosed with AR). I believe it is because she would swallow so many bubbles which would go in her tummy and cause her to spit up. Sometimes the nipples will leak, and sometimes they won't. Another issue is that the thread in which you screw the lid on does not line up sometimes. It looks like it's on right, but it's not. For busy moms, it's best to be able to pop the top right on and quiet a fussy baby promptly. I've have numerous occasions where I did not know I hadn't screwed it on correctly and splashed milk everywhere when I shook the bottle up. That was a waste of a feeding not to mention embarrassing (since it would happen in public). Even though the design is cute, these bottles are sure to take up more space than the coventional slender bottle. So, you have to have a bit extra room when packing them. I will probably continue to use them, but I have just purchased the Dr. Brown bottles and will see how they work out. I heard that the baby will spit up less with those. Avent just really needs to work on the threading issue on these bottles, and trap more bubbles so that they won't get into baby's tummy. I really don't see what the rave over these bottles is about. They're an "ok" kind of bottle.
