Baby Products Reviews of Philips Avent 3 Pack 4oz BottlesCustomer Review: Love these, BUT MUCH TOO MUCH GAS! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought so many of these sets (up to size 3 nipples) and now I am bummed. I am in the midst of changing bottles. I love them for how they look , feel and durability but 1) Coming from the Hospital bottles, you cannot read the measurements well if you are counting MLs, it's vague under 20ML and above 120 MLs if you have the 4 oz etc.. 2) the bottles fill up with so many bubbles causing frequent gas= stop and go feed and burping= very unhappy babies in pain! ;-(
I have no complaints about leaking as they are real tight and secure, just maybe from the side of the baby's mouth but that's not the bottle's fault. I am holding onto these as they might work better when they get a little bit older and switching to the size 2 nipple.
For now, I grabbed a Dr. Brown's at Walgreens to try the whole no air bottles and couldn't believe how much faster they ate! Although their Size 1 nipple is much tinier than an Avent 1, had to push a skewer through the hole several times. 6 1/2 oz in 10 minutes! One big burp at the end. No stopping and starting again every 20-30 MLs! I just can't believe the difference in time spent feeding! (esp. matters when you have 2!) Someone else in the reviews mentioned getting the wide neck Dr. Brown's as they are similar to the Avent bottles. Today I went to a store and physically compared the two, shouldn't be too much nipple confusion,:-) as compared to those skinny bottles.
Maybe my girls are a little gassy as they were preemies and started on the nipple early so they have a short span from waking up and eating, resulting in them acting a little ravished while I wait for the milk to heat. Maybe they are gasping too much air before they begin..? BUT there is just a TON of BUBBLES in the bottle! I don't get it as the box claims prevents colic and the not so much air statement on the box. "Anti vacuum skirt prevents Air Swallowing" Hmmm... not for my twins.
I give Avent 2 stars, as their nipples and parts are all so well made and of the best materials. Very sturdy, easy to wash and simple to put together. The only other complaint would be the lid doesn't pop off smoother but that is part of their sleek secure fittings. The 8oz are awesome for storage of prepared formula to have in the fridge, ready to go, since everything seals nice and airtight.
Customer Review: Depends on you baby Summary: 3 Stars
I first bought these bottles for my daugther who is now 16 months. She loved these bottles and they were the ONLY ones she would take. It seemed all the other bottles were too fast for her. When we had to put cereal in her bottles (for reflux) the varible flow was our bestfriend it's perfect for cereal! I will say the only time I had problems with leaking and the problems above was when I screwed the ring TOO tight. These bottles you just need to screw it enough to where its tight but don't over do it or it WILL go everywhere. Also if you wet the ring a little that helps. NOW.... Why this only got 3 stars instead of 5 When I say depends on the baby I mean depends on the baby. I soon got pregnant just months after my daughter was born and planned to use these bottles as well. BUT I was going to bf'd him something I didn't do with my daughter. I was late introducing the bottle b/c we had some problems w/ colic and so on my son REFUSED this bottle! He was not fooled one bit with this bottle and truthful to me it's nothing like the breast. It's not soft like the breast around the nipple. I could see why he didn't like this bottle after bf'ing so long (8wks) He hated it! I was a bit disappointed b/c that's suppose to be the big saler point of these bottles is that they are EASY to switch from breast to bottle. He took the playtex nursers for a while but gets frusterated with it. So now I am trying the ventair which I read the same thing. I still have yet to find a nipple that is NOT too fast nor too slow and soft enough to where he will take it. So far the ventair bottle is the first bottle he has not problem latching on to properly with out making any smacking noises (which means the baby is getting air). I would totally recommend this bottle to anyone who is bottlefeeding soley. I would only recommend this bottle for breastfeed babies only IF you introduce this bottle early on. I have spoke to many other mothers and those who introduced after 6wks most seemed to have the same problem I did. Other then that I think they are great bottles, very easy to clean, many nipple choices(great for different babies sucking needs).

Customer Review: The worst bottles...felt so ripped off! Summary: 1 Stars
Everyone told me that these were "the" bottles. So, we bought newborn as well as the 9 and 11 oz sets. Here were the problems with these bottles/nipples:
1. Nipples are too long and too tough...the baby would almost gag on the nipple when feeding and would fall asleep quickly because she was having to work too hard.
2. The bottles had a vacuum effect - every few minutes I would have to unscrew the cap and screw it back on to stop the vacuum effect, which would stop the milk flow from the nipple. Every time I had to re-screw on the cap, milk would start leaking. I followed the directions exactly and did not over tighten the cap, but still the problem persisted.
3. The nipple flow was too slow or too fast. My newborn couldn't get anything from the newborn nipples and would fall asleep from exhaustion. We then went with the next size up (faster) and that worked. Once she outgrew that speed, and needed the level 2 and 3, they were too fast. There was no inbetween.
4. The nipple flow rates work differently on each sized bottle. I don't know what causes this, but she was able to eat with the 2 flow nipple on the 4 ounce bottles, but when she needed more food, and we tried the 2 flow nipple on the 9 ounce bottle, the 2 nipple flowed too slowly.
Overall, my experience with these bottles was exasperating. I felt like I was a "sucker" for falling for the latest fad. I then went to the store and bought one of every bottle out there. She went for the Playtex Nurser with the latex nipple (they are softer and more flexible) and has loved it ever since. Haven't had any problems what-so-ever and finally feeding is a happy experience.
One thing I can say is that the Avent bottles with the wide neck are perfect for mixing formula in. We actually mix the formula in the Avents with a hand mixer and then pour the formula into the Playtex. Also, we can use the Avent bottles with the sippy cup conversion pieces, so the money we spent on the bottles isn't a total loss. We now have more sippy cups than we could ever possibly want or use!
Customer Review: More expensive than the average bottle, but WELL WORTH IT!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a six-month-old daughter who started refusing the breast as soon as I returned to work when she was 7 weeks old. In conjunction with my determination and the Avent Isis breast pump, I have been able to continue to feed her solely breast milk (no formula) this entire time. The only time I ever had a problem with leaking was if I used the wrong nipple with these bottles. If you use these along with the Avent disposable system, you have to make sure you don't mix up the nipples- Avent has made it easy by making the "disposable" nipples (that go with the disposable liners- great for freezing!) a light blue shade-this system uses clear nipples. To make things easier in my household, I decided not to go with the disposable system; I use the liners to express milk for the freezer, then my husband or I pour the milk into one of these bottles at feeding time. Another great feature with these bottles are th different size nipples you can use. Some of the bottles my daughter receives are solely breast milk; on those, we use the "1" size (although the packaging says they're for newborns, the sizes have more to do with flow out of the nipple than the size of the baby's mouth). For the feedings that are breast milk and rice cereal, we use either the "3" size or the variable flow size. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I never used any other brand of bottle- since I pump 5 times a day, I needed something that would go with the pump without having to use the adapter that they sell. So I don't know from experience how these compare with other bottles. What I do know is that even though the bottles have been in our house for six months, they still look like new (we don't have a dishwasher). You will have to replace the nipples from time to time, but this whole system works great. It is well worth the extra money!ps- if you are like me and don't have a dishwasher (or you don't feel like waiting to wash bottles until you have a full load of dishes), Avent has a microwave sterilizer as well- another worthwhile purchase.
