Baby Products Reviews of Philips AVENT Via Breast Milk StorageCustomer Review: Love these contatiners Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using these to store milk for 6 months now, and I LOVE them. (I use the 8 oz size) They stack together so they don't take up too much room in my bag in the morning. (I work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week-so need to take several every day) And they sit upright so they don't leak in my cooler or in the refrigerator at work (and avoids the gross-out factor with co-workers that the bags can have) I recently bought the adaptors to pump directly into them, and love them even more. Also, my husband has to handle the milk when I am at work, and these are way easier for him than the bags, so he wastes less milk to spilling, etc. My only comment is that you do have to be careful not to overfill them, as breast milk expands when it freezes, and can pop off the lid or crack the container. But this would be a concern with ANY storage container, bags included. Hate the way breast milk storage bags leak when they are thawing out, and no matter how flat you try to freeze them, they never stack up well, so you end up with an avalanche of bags falling out of the freezer. I love that these containers are sturdy plastic that can stack up in the freezer, and they don't require special handling to thaw to avoid contaiminating the milk. As to buying the bases and lids separately, the containers are not meant to be used more than three times before they are discarded, while the lids hold up much longer, so I'm glad I can only buy what I need at a time, so no wasted money or extra supplies to store. As to cost, other similar containers cost $3-4 each, so $15 for 10 lids and bases seems very reasonable.
Customer Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
I use these in combination with regular Avent bottles. I have the converter to use with the Medela Advanced Pump, but I actually end up using the Avent hand-pump almost exclusively (faster for me, and quieter).
I love the pre-sterilized and disposable quality. When I am behind on washing bottles or traveling, it's wonderful to know I have these on the shelf. I also use these for storing frozen milk. I had bad luck with freezing the bags and am much more comfortable with using these. Thawing frozen breast milk may take a little more time (although you can do it in the bottle warmer if you are careful) than a bag, but I'm willing to trade that for the pure convenience these offer.
I do wish they sold the lids separately. And I wish I knew what to do with the dozen or so extra converter rings (2 with every pack adds up after a few packages). Also wondering why they pack a #1 nipple or two in most kits. My child uses a #3 nipple, so they end up going in the trash.
Maybe it's just the pen I use, but I've found that I can wipe off the ink from use #1 while I was the container before use #2. I use a sharpie and write on the smooth part of the bottle that looks like it is designed for writing on. In soapy water, the ink wipes off. If I write on the textured part of the container, it stays. So I write my son's name on the textured part (in case they end up at daycare) and put a dot there for each subsequent use.
These might be too expensive to use exclusively, but they are definately worth keeping a few packages in the cupboard.
Customer Review: These are lifesavers for a working nursing mom! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased these containers before my son was born. At first, I was storing my milk in the Avent bottles, but after I started to build a milk bank for my return to work, I found that they were expensive and would topple over in the fridge if stacked. I also tried the bags and they were TERRIBLE--messy, leaked, and froze into weird shapes that were hard to store in my freezer. Thank goodness for these containers! They are lightweight, they fit inside each other when empty and don't take up my precious pantry space, they stack in the freezer without falling over and they are durable enough to be transported back and forth between home and the sitter's.
I have never had a problem with leaks, although I do make sure the lids are screwed on tightly. My sitter loves the ease of using the adaptor and not having to deal with drop-ins. Many people have complained that they take longer to defrost, but I purchased the Avent bottle warmer and can defrost them in minutes with no problem. As for those who do not like to cross out the date and mess up the containers after each use, I use a wipe-off marker on the lid after pumping, which easily washes off, then I make a small mark on the container in permanent marker so I know how many times I have used it.
I am only giving these containers four stars because the lids can get lost and then you have to buy a new set with the adaptors, but it's not really that big of a deal, especially for the convenience!
Customer Review: I used these in the hospital after delivery Summary: 4 Stars
These disposable or reusable storage containers are a great idea that allow flexibility with storage/feeding/pumping milk. I brought 5 of them plus the adapter and 2 nipple travel packs to the hospital with me when I delivered my baby. I have the back-to-work (...)pump kit and I left the (...)pump in the case but replaced the bottles. My daughter didn't take to (...)feeding or the traditional nipple so we tried the Avent nipple with the disposable container and adapter. It made a world of difference. She finally starting to feed and it saved me from a lot of worry and frustration. It was so convenient because I could pull out a new clean container each time. Afterwards, I would stack up the used containers to be taken home and cleaned later. The one small drawback that was very noticable was that the containers do leak if the adapter or lids are not put on properly. I discovered this when I was shaking formula in one of the containers. What I do to prevent this is press the lid on first then twist it until it stops. Then I visually check to make sure that it is all the way in and that there are no gaps. The manufacturer does state that it can be sterilized and reused up to 3 times and I would agree as the containers are a softer plastic than the bottles so they could warp if reused too often or perhaps harbor bacteria in the plastic if it is scratched.
Customer Review: Not all it's chalked up to be Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this set because I was going back to work and thought this system would work out well for both milk storage and feeding in daycare. I already use the Avent bottle system and have the adaptor for my Medela pump, so I could pump directly into it which was a plus. The fact that they stack was also nice, since I don't have a lot of room in my cabinets. Finally, I liked the idea that I could cut out all those pouring milk from bottle to bag to bottle again steps. It all sounded like it would work well, but the negatives ended outweighing the positives for me:(1) It's too expensive for something that's supposed to be "tossable" (2) If you use the containers for breast milk storage and write the name and date on the container, you can't reuse them again unless you cross out the date and name from the first use, it's a minor thing I know, but it just bugged me! (3) Screw top containers don't screw on and seal very well (4) You only get two adaptors to turn it into a bottle and they don't sell them separately, and then when you do convert it to a bottle they are too big and bulky. (5) The ounce markings are really hard to see when there is milk in the container (6) If you freeze them, it takes a lot longer to thaw than a milk storage bag and they take up more space in the freezer than milk storage bags.
