Baby Products Reviews of Philips AVENT Newborn Starter SetCustomer Review: They LEAK!!! Summary: 1 Stars
We used these bottles with our first daughter - they were highly recommended by the hospital, a friend who owns a day care, and many others. What a disappoinment!
They LEAK all over the place!! I was using a breast pump...and all that breastmilk was leaking everywhere - it's far too precious to simply wipe up and throw away!
I was recently at Babies R Us and talking with a woman who wanted to purchase these...I told her my story and she opted for another brand. The sales associate came over and 'showed' me how to assemble the bottle so it wouldn't leak. I only watched to be polite...but let me tell you...at 2am, with a hungry baby, I really am not concerned with having to make sure everything is properly in line. I would much rather grab what I need, put the lid on and turn to tighten.
We liked the shape of the Avent bottle and nipple...so now for our second daughter we are using the Gerber Comfort Hold bottle system. It is great - nice wide bottle, good nipple shape (easy to switch between bottle and breast) - and best of all...they don't leak!
Customer Review: Don't Start with a Starter Set! Summary: 1 Stars
These bottles look so nice and are so durable BUT they only offer one kind of nipple and are not compatible with any other system, so if you child doesn't like thier nipple, you're heavily invested in a huge set that is useless. And Avent is SO expensive! Niether of my boys liked these bottles/nipples. I primarily breastfeed and the shape of these nipples are nothing like mine. The silicone is the wrong texture too - nothing like the real thing.
If you really like the look of Avent and think you want to use them, buy just one bottle and nipple to start until you are sure they work.
In my opinion, a much better starter system is the Playtex (I use the Drop-Ins) - it comes with several different nipple shapes to try, including latex, which has a more realistic texture.
I foolishly bought the Avent starter set because someone somewhere told me that they were the most breastfeeder friendly and that companies that make bottles AND formula only want to sabatoge your brreastfeeding efforts - - what a silly and paranoid accusation that turned out to be!
Customer Review: I liked them but I did have a leaking problem Summary: 4 Stars
My daughter will be two later this month. We just took her off the bottle a month ago so I've had almost two years experience with these bottles and have learned quite a bit. For the first year I used premixed formula, then powered toddler formula for 6 months and milk for about 4 months. For the first 9 months I washed by hand and sterilized in the microwave sterilizer and then I washed in the dishwasher after that. I learned that the nipples started to leak after they weakened. The dishwasher only weakened them slightly, but mixing the powered formula in the bottle with the nipple weaked them greatly. When using premixed formula and hand washing the nipples lasted at least 3 months. When using premixed formula or milk and dishwashing they lasted 2-3 months. When mixing the formula in the bottle they didn't even last a month. I used to replace the nipples every 2-3 months so I didn't realize any problem until after she was a year old and I started mixing formula in the bottle. They drove me crazy for the next four months until I figured out the problem.
Customer Review: you can do better... Summary: 3 Stars
I liked the idea of these bottles being the closest to the breast and being low air. However, I don't believe they do either very well. Also, I found that they do leak on occasion mostly around the collar. The nipple holes seem to be varying sizes even though all my nipples are newborn. Some seem to pour formula out and some seem like they have no hole at all. My daughter spits up a lot after eating and I can just hear the air bubbles in the bottle as I'm feeding her (I'm holding her correctly and making sure the bottle is tilted). The spit up worries me because when I get her in the morning I can see that she spit up during the night and I worry that she will choke. I'm actually on line trying to find a better bottle for her but figured I'd warn others since these bottles are not cheap. Do yourself a favor and don't invest big bucks like I did. Buy a few different bottles to see whcih one you like best. I wish I had. Oh yeah, I gave it three stars because my daughter doesn't seem to mind them and the wide mouths make them easy to clean.
Customer Review: Pretty good bottle Summary: 4 Stars
My son is now 8mos old and has only used the Avent bottles. He was breast fed until he was 4mos old but would sometimes get the breast milk from the bottle. He never had a problem sucking on them. The only complaint I have is the the avent bottles are not a "standard size", meaning most American nipples can be put on a gerber juce container so they can drink straight from the container instead of dirtying a bottle, or you can put the "standard" nipples in a nipple rack for the sich washer with the nipple rings still on the nipple. With Avent bottles you can use a nipple rack but you have to use every other opening in the nipple rack intead of using every hole in the rack because Avent nipples are much bigger that the "standard" nipple. You also have to take the rings off before putting the nipples in the rack. Other than that, my son has never been a spitup baby nor has he ever been colicy. (Of course, I can't say if that has anything to do with the bottle or not but you can take it how ever you see fit.)
