Customer Review: Love It...Would Recommend to Any New Mom!

I bought this set when I had my first child in 2002. If it weren't for such an easy to use product, I may have quit a lot sooner, since I had to go back to work 7 weeks postpardum. I kept my milk supply up and nursed her for almost 11 months! This pump is great because it's very easy to use, you don't have to use the messy bags that care providers and daycares hate to mess with. (They don't like all the spills, leaks and getting your milk all over themselves...I heard a lot of complaints from her daycare about other moms who didn't use these bottles like I did)! I admit it was a little difficult at first (as with any pump) to get the hang of it and pump a lot in a short period of time. But I took a picture of my baby with me to the restroom and pumped away (without worrying about looking for an outlet-they're usually near the sinks so you'd have to stand there with little privacy unless your office has a pumping room). It's easy to wash, care for and put together/take apart. It is also very discreet with the bag that looks much like a lunch box. I bought this pump after seeing ads for it in all the baby magazines . . . This is my first child and I didn't know what to expect from breastfeeding, etc. At first I thought that my disappointing results with the pump were my fault but after reading other reviewers remarks I realized it wasn't. First, the "petal" that is supposed to stimulate let-down actually traps milk beneath it preventing a good suction. If you don't bend forward when using this pump, the milk will run back out (My back hurts enough these days without even more strain of sitting in a hunched position trying to pump for 20 minutes). The milk becomes trapped in the well and doesn't drain into the bottle very well. And the handle does creak. I've found that I can express the milk by hand faster and more efficiently than with the pump. I'm currently looking at an electric model for when I go back to work.
HOWEVER, I am very pleased with the bottles and nipples that came with the package. My daughter accepted the bottle on the first try. I'm sorry that I wasted money on this pump . . . money that I could have spent toward a better one.

As I got great advice here before I purchased, I wanted to share my experience. I have not one but 2 Avent Isis pumps. I have also been renting a FANCY Medela electric pump for a month.While I get more milk quickly using the electric pump, I do great using the Isis pumps. Having two allows me to double pump, or to always have one pump clean. And for the price, compared to a fancy pump, why not??
The Medela actually makes me more sore, and I find I need to use the Avent pump occasionally because it is so much more comfortable. I get equal amounts of milk in a session from both pumps, although it may take a bit longer using the hand pump.
Also, unlike the electric pump which has a set rate of "pulls", I can vary the rate of suction to suit my needs with the hand pump. That actually seems to make it less stressful on my body. If you are having trouble expressing with a machine that can really make a difference.
I am going back to work soon and plan to use the medela pump in the office (they have one) and my isis pumps at home. I think I'll have no problem providing adequate milk for my work days this way.

Before my daughter was born, I had already decided to use a breast pump as opposed to nursing. In the hospital, I received a lot of pressure to nurse instead of using the pump. I tried it and it just didn't work out. My feeling was it didn't matter how she received the breast milk, as long as she got the breast milk. I started using the Medela pump the hospital provided and then borrowed the electric Medela Pump-n-Style from a friend of mine. Although this worked well, it wasn't that easy to use in front of company. When we first got home and had a lot of visitors, I always had to go upstairs and pump. I didn't like the double pump system, it made me feel like a cow.
I now use the Avent pump and find it much more practical. I am much more flexible with the hand held. I can pack it in the diaper bag and go. I don't have to worry about finding a plug or a private place to pump. The Avent makes it much easier to be discrete.
Had I not started using the Avent, I might have already stopped pumping. Now, I am getting 6-8oz in just 14 minuets (7 min each side). This pump has been a life saver!

I bought this pump because I was returning to work when my daughter was six weeks old. I work only a few days a week, but on those days very long hours. I did not want her to have to eat formula. I started pumping right after delivery to "get my milk up." Now I am able to feed her during the days that I am off and still be able to painlessly pump enough to freeze. I am happy with the easy of the pump and have not had any problems with sore nipples. I was however,very upset when I broke a piece right before returning to work. I thought all of the prep time I had spent would be in vain. I quickly went online to Avents home page and ordered a new piece at a great price, but was upset when I found that shipping would take 30 days!(they are located in London). So I called the 800 number to complain, they were very helpful. I was transfered to a support staff in my area, I explained the situation, and a new piece was shipped to me two days later Free of Charge. I would recomend this product and this company to anyone. (I also ended up recieving the ordered piece within five days not 30)
