Baby Products Reviews of Philips AVENT BPA Free Infant Bottle Starter SetCustomer Review: Worst bottles ever Summary: 1 Stars
Even a 1 star rating is unwarranted. These bottles are overpriced and the design is defective. Believe the reports of leaks - they're horrible. It doesn't matter how you close them, my wife and I have tried everything - closing them dry, wetting the lip of the bottle, the nipple, closing them tightly, closing them just snug, closing them quickly, closing them slowly. Occasionally they don't leak, but the majority of the time within 10 seconds, our son's shirt is dripping wet, totally saturated with leaking milk, juice or water.
You might think you discover the "trick" to close them, and have a few that don't leak, but then you'll get one that simply pours milk/juice/water all over the place. And really, what bottle should require some contorted, undocumented "trick" to close. It's a stinking bottle, you should screw the lid on and be done.
We replaced all our expensive Avent bottles with Playtex Drop-ins and they've never leaked and we don't have to follow some 35 step process to close them.
DO NOT BUY AVENT BOTTLES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES unless you intend to use them to bathe your child.
Customer Review: BPA-free leak, old ones were not nearly as bad! Summary: 1 Stars
I agree with others here that the BPA-free bottles leak! Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Tight, loose, or anywhere in between...they still leak. Very frustrating. And it always happens at the worst times...when the baby is screaming to be fed, or course. And it doesn't just drip, it drips faster and faster, soaking the child's chest in as little as 3-5 seconds!
I used the original (non BPA-free) Avent bottles with my 1st child. Those leaked when overtightened, but the directions warned of that. So you just had to not overtighten the tops, and there were no issues.
I bought the BPA free Avent bottles with my 2nd child. Those are the problem! BIG difference from the originals, although I can't imagine why.
My 2nd child is now just over 2 months old, but I'm considering buying new bottles now because I'm sick of the anger and frustration these cause when I'm trying to feed a starving baby and they are pouring milk everywhere! And of course that is bad after spending an average of $9 per bottle on these...times 8! ugh!
Customer Review: Avent Bottles are the best-don't listen to people who didn't use the correct nipple. Summary: 5 Stars
Avent Bottle are the best bottles on the market. I tried every type of bottle when my baby had colic. When I first got an Avent bottle, it was very leaky ONLY because the nipple was leaked fast because out baby was too little for a fast flow nipple. Fast flow nipples will come out very fast and practically spill everywhere if the baby is too young for that nipple. You have to get the slow flow nipples, not the nipples which come with most bottles.
I kept reading these reviews wondering why people were saying the rims leaked, and found one saying the nipple leaked milk down to the rim and then dripped. It's the nipple that's leaking.
People get upset fast when they pay a lot for something. Make sure you get slow flow nipples, I don't see any of the complainers saying they switched to the correct nipple type. I don't think it's the rims leaking. And if it is acutally leaking, I'm sure the problem is getting solved as we speak. These bottles are great, don't let these bad reviews keep you from getting them. They are the best bottles.
Customer Review: Gives my newborn gas Summary: 3 Stars
I find that the level 1 nipple is still too fast for my newborn, who is an eager eater. You really have to test the flow first. Usually before I I give it to her, I turn the full bottle upside down to check temperature and the milk just squirts fast before the seal. When this happens while I am actually giving it to her, she chokes and coughs because too much milk was coming into her mouth, kinda like an overactive let-down nipple. Since the milk is flowing too fast for the baby, she ends up getting uncomfortable gas. So it depends on what kind of an eater your baby is - if she is a "barracuda", it's gonna be a problem. So I switched to Dr. Brown's bottles, which works for her.
I don't have any leakage problem like a lot of the reviewers mentioned, and these bottles with the wide rim are super easy to clean, the short built makes it stable and doesn't easily topple over ...
I do like the Avent's manual/electric breast pump - so I am now using this set as milk storage bottles.
Customer Review: Leaky shoddy product Summary: 1 Stars
Wish I could give this product ZERO stars...
Please do yourself a favor and go with another brand, On any given day 1 out of 3 bottles leak. Originally I read all the negative reviews and thought that people were just installing the nipple incorrectly, however I was sadly mistaken. A leaky bottle might not sound like that much of an issue, but try dealing with a wet sticky baby at 3am in the morning.
There is a serious design flaw with these bottles and Phillips Avent will not address or accept fault. Their customer service is terrible, putting the fault on the consumer. Phillips has lost me as a lifelong customer and I will ensure that all my friends and family will steer clear of such a shoddy product and shady company.
I have since switched my bottles out to Born Free and have not had 1 leaky bottle incident.
If you do decide to go with these bottles I hope you have better luck than I and the many other people did.
