Customer Review: Well constructed bottle wide neck bottle, for a price.
Summary: 4 Stars

The bottles pictured here are the honey colored, polyether sulfone variety.

The wide mouth sold me to these bottles. We switched to these bottles from Evenflo Classic Glass Bottle 8 oz, 6-Pack and Breastmilk Bottle Set-8oz. These bottles were appropriate when our little one was breast feeding as they fit Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump with Shoulder Bag perfectly. However, when we stopped breast feeding and started forumla, it was very difficult to scoop formula into these bottles. In contrast the mouth of the Philips Avent BPA Free Bottle, Dual Pack, 9 ounce (being reviewed) is nearly 2 inches in diameter making it very easy to scoop formula into them whether it be on the road or early in the evening.

While many reviewers found this bottle to leak, I did not, even with Philips Avent Fast Flow Nipple, BPA-Free nipples I ordered separately. However, I can see how if put together quickly the bottles *could* leak. The nipples contain an overhanging lip, which if seated improperly onto the bottle, will fail to cause a seal with the bottle and leak. To circumvent this, I pull the nipple through the ring until it is well seated and then screw the ring/nipple onto the bottle. I have yet to have a single leak.

Price! The bottles are rather on the expensive side, even when available as a two-pack!. While I found the wide-neck to be excellent, a more frugal buyer may consider Dr. Brown's BPA Free Polypropylene Natural Flow Wide Neck Bottle, 8 oz - 3-Pack. While one can speculate the reason behind the cost difference, the bottles being reviewed are made in Europe. Maybe it's the 'Philips' brand name.

Customer Review: Might be better to shop around.

I admit that I am a creature of habit and used these bottles again for my second child. These bottles were recommended when I was pregnant with our first child by the Prepared Childbirth Educator at the hospital, so of course I used them. Her reasoning had something to do with them having the most natural, or most similar feel, when compared with the breast, and that there would be less "nipple confusion" if you're going back and forth between the breast and bottle. The thing is, if the nipple and bottle are not completely dry when you go to screw it on, it will leak and get formula everywhere when you go to shake the bottle. I had forgotten the second time around and formula would go flying all over the kitchen floor. So, now I remember to shake it over the kitchen sink--but it's still a major pain in the butt. If you get it on correctly, of course no problems, and both kids have been happy with the nipples.
***October 14, 2009 UPDATE - So, I ordered the Dr. Brown bottles because I didn't read anything about them leaking in the reviews, but OMG! they have FIVE pieces to one bottle to wash!!! I don't know about you, but... lol... I don't want to spend that much time washing bottles. I think I finally found the secret to getting the AVENT bottles to NOT leak. They have to be screwed on very slowly. I think that allows the rubber of the nipple to not get all bunched up. Anyway, did that all day yesterday and today and I haven't had any problems. Now what am I going to do with those Dr. Brown bottles...

Customer Review: Leak EVERYWHERE - what happened to the old generation Avent?
Summary: 1 Stars

These bottles are infuriating! I used Avent bottles and products with my first three children and never had a complaint. In fact, I used to recommend them to all of my friends. However, with all the hype about BPA, we decided to get rid of our old Avent plastic bottles and purchase the "new and improved" non-BPA ones. BIG MISTAKE! Something is really wrong with the venting system in these new bottles. They leak constantly all over everything and make a huge mess. Sometimes, I'll get the lid on correctly and it won't leak, but then it's impossible to figure out what I did to get it on right. There seams to be some sort of silicone flap on the underside of the nipple. If this flap comes in perfect contact with the neck of the bottle as you are screwing on the cap, then it won't leak. I still haven't been able to get it to work correctly. Who needs such a headache with twins?

We have since switched to Evenflo Classic glass bottles. They are a fraction of the price, recyclable, super easy to clean, non-BPA, and sturdy. We haven't had any leak issues with these, and that makes for peaceful midnight feedings with the babies.

Avent needs to go back to the drawing board. I still love their formula caddy and bottle warmer, though!

Customer Review: Save your money, save your clothing, save your time

The only good thing that came out of purchasing Avent bottles is that it was a true test of tenacity and sheer will which helped build character.

I originally bought the Avent bottles when I began supplementing breast milk with formula, which was 13 mths ago. Despite them leaking from day one, I tolerated them until I called Philips, whose rep sent me their sippy cups, stating the nipples would work just as well. So without any other option at the time, I went with it. Turns out, the nipples fit just fine, but the Avent sippy cups also leaked! Again, I endured the milk-soaked shirts, stained car seats, sofa cushions, added laundry, sticky everything just so our son could continue with the bottles he's gotten accustomed to. After months of leaking sippy cups, I decided to throw in the towel and asked for some sort of restitution for these shabby bottles, which they flatly do not do.

If you're looking for bottles, my advice to you as a seasoned Avent bottle user is to save your money (and your sanity) and buy something else. I now use Bornfree and they are FANTASTIC!! You never know how bad you had it until something good comes along!!

Customer Review: These bottles are horrible. For your own sanity do not buy them

If you're in the market for new bottles learn from my mistake and buy something else. I have twins and I bought 12 of these bottles. They're terrible. Like so many other people have said, they leak. If your kid(s) have acid reflux like mine do, beware these bottles will ruin your rare good feedings. You can test them at the beginning of a feeding and see that they don't leak, then halfway through your feeding they start leaking for no reason. No one should have to get a nipple wet and learn to develop a magic way of tightening them. That's ridiculous. I know of no other bottle on the market that requires that kind of effort to prevent leaks. If you're feeding a baby (or babies in my case) you want something quick and easy-- aka, not this bottle. If you must get Avent, the cloudy kind is far superior, although I've had some leaks with that kind too. I've never had a leak with Dr Brown's bottles and their nipples are way cheaper.
