Baby Products Reviews of Ocean Wonders Musical Aquarium Crib AttachmentCustomer Review: great because baby loves it...but its not without problems Summary: 5 Stars
My sister bought this for our son when he was a newborn (hes now 16 months old) because her son (2 years older than ours) had one and loved it. He had the 'older' model- we got the 'newer' model, which is larger and has more 'bells & whistles' (more/better quality songs/sounds, moving sea characters, more settings, etc.) It was apparently designed as an improvement to the old one, though I'm not convinced the redesign was all improvement. First off, I am giving this product 5 starts only because my son LOVES the thing so much. It was not really used when he was an infant (we coslept until he was about 6-7 months old) but I credit it with getting our son to sleep in his own crib through the night (we also had the FP aquarium bouncer, which has a similar aquarium atached to it- we used that since birth, pretty much, and our son always loved it so I'm not too suprised he like this so much). At 6-7 months, he was able to turn the toy off & on by himsef, and we would often hear it go off in the night- menaing he woke up and pushed it-with nary a sound from him- apparently it would lull him back to sleep. The spinning things also kept him occupied in the mornings, affording us a precious few extra minutes in bed in the morning. Overall, more sleep for us- how could you not give that 5 stars?! We did have a brief problem with it 'overstimulating' him during naptime (meaning he was playing with it instead of napping) but that soon resolved itself. He's 16 months old now and STILL loves this thing so much (plays it every night at bedtime & sometimes in the middle of the night to soothe himslef to sleep, and again as entertainment in the morning) we even take it with us whenever we travel (it will attach to the pack n play) in order to guarentee a good nights sleep for all ;).
My gripes with it are as follows:
1) it will not attach to some of the newer 'stationary rail' cribs with thicker top rails- we have the 'Kalani' crib (by DaVinci), and the toy does not fit on the side rails- fortunately it DOES fit on the end rails (at the head & foot of the crib) because these are thinner. This has never been a problem. May not fit on all cribs, though, so that is definately something to consider. Also, because of the battery pack, it will not fit "properly" (meaning with the recommended clearence) until you have the crib mattress dropped to the lowest setting (which you should do by the time baby can sit up) prior to that, the crib bumper (if you have one ) will likey hit the battery pack- we had thin bumpers, so it could be scrunched a little to let the battery pack fit, but thicker bumpers may interefere with the battery.
2) My biggest gripe about the redesign is the external battery pack- the new model has the batteries in a separate piece that 'plugs' into the machine. I totaly see the resoning behind this design- it allows you to change the batteries (which do need changing pretty frequently- I'd say every 4 weeks or so with regular use) without removing the entire toy from the crib. This is great, BUT- the battery pack can easy be jostled free of its connection by baby playing with the spinning characters or oversealously pusing the on/off button- then it won't work. This happened quite frequently to us- our son would be upset because his 'fish' wouldn't work & we'd end up having to go in & wiggle the battery back back in. Very frustrating. The batteries are very easy to change, though. You do need a screwdriver (like all childrens toys w/ batteries) to access the batteries. The screws are easy to find & easy to open & close.
Overall, I have to say we're very happy with this toy. Sure, it has its problems (I agree with the comments about the packaging being virtually impossible to open) but the enjoyment my son has recieved from this thing far outweighs its annoyances. To date, this is the longest running toy (meaning he uses it on a daily basis and has for the longest amount of time -going on a year now) that he has.
