Baby Products Reviews of North States Superyard Play Yard, Classic XTCustomer Review: Good Enough Summary: 3 Stars
We got it around Christms. Used it for the Christmas tree (at the time, children ages 5, 3, and 10 month old twins). Since then, we leave it in the den (collapsed, according style) and move it to wherever is needed (like the huge opening between our den and kitchen that no other affordable child gate can cover).
What I don't like:
-It feels like I'm forcing the joints to open/close to adjust.
-With little movement it held up fine, but it now has a crack in it near one of the hinges(probably due to opening and closing it too quickly once?).
-It's a little difficult to connect the ends together.
-Moves when pushed (even by a scrawny 10 month old) unless ends are anchored in corners of something.
What I do like:
-Enough room: My friends and I had four 12 month olds in it at the park the other day with toys and snacks.
-Good for outside. Good for large/oddly shaped openings.
I recommend it for:
light use (not put up and taken down a lot) and outdoor places.
Might recommend it for:
heavy use (up and down a lot - like we do). It's 'good enough', but expect some wear and 'tear' (and then watch little fingers if it does)!
I would NOT recommend it for:
destructive children or strong children (or pets), this is NOT the gate for you! Too easy to move or crack.
Customer Review: For what it is, it's good. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this as a playpen substitute. It's as advertised, so I don't have any complaint about the quality, but up close it looks even cheaper than it does in the photo. The person who said it looks like a dog kennel nailed it. So if you're looking for something that will go well with the decor in your living room, don't bother with this.
The way it looks doesn't bother me that much; what does bother me is that my son, by the age of 12 months, had learned how to push this thing around. It doesn't anchor to anything, so he started to shove it all over the living room, making it tip and generally creating chaos. My solution was to attach those removable non-marring 3M "Command" hooks to the wall and tie coated wire around them, then lash that wire to the play yard. It doesn't look beautiful, that's for sure, but it works; the play yard doesn't budge any more. If your little one is walking, you too will have to jury-rig a solution to their tendency to push the yard around and even lift it if they're strong enough.
I also recommend you get those colorful interlocking foam tiles to put under the play yard; it makes the play area a bit safer. Amazon sells the "Edushape" brand, but you can get various brands just about anywhere.
All in all, it's not an elegant solution, but weary parents who need a break will love it with all its flaws.
Customer Review: ugh not convenient portability Summary: 3 Stars
I struggled to get the thing out of the box (it was very heavy in the folded position). Then I fought with it to bend the sides, worried I was doing something wrong and wondering if it made a difference which direction you bent them (there are warning stickers on both sides - no way to tell what is the inside and what is the outside). Once assembled I thought it was working out good enough (my son can push/lift on the sides and lift it a hair but not get out) until this week when he started sliding the whole thing a few inches in one direction or another to try to reach nearby objects in the room (assembled like picture.. would not trust it assembled another way as I'm pretty sure my son would tip it over). He is about to turn 14 months. I would not say this is good for up to age 2 as the description suggests. Nor would I say convenient to transport though maybe easier for a man or a stronger woman than me. Kind of expensive as well (we spent more since we ordered it on another site - don't know if it was offered through amazon at the time). Was a pain to clean when we got it as well because I sprayed and wiped down with baby safe cleaner between many grooves which was time consuming. Would have washed it outside to spray down with a hose or something, but did not want to have to unfold it and carry to get it there.
Customer Review: For what its worth... Summary: 1 Stars
We bought the super play yard and the XT extension as a play area for our twins. For *that* its wonderful. However, today I fell trying to get in and out of it. I am pregnant and its very awkward to use. The manufacturer gives instructions on how to open and close from the panels, but, this only works well as the 18 square foot octagon shape. When its the 6 by 6 square with the extension, when you open the gate one whole side has to be swung open and the play area resists. Not to mention that if you have twins in it, you have to try and close it back up one handed while transitioning one twin in/out so that whoever is in it while you retrieve the other can't lean on the play yard wall and possibly hurt themselves while you attend to the other twin. And whats sad is that this gating system is primarily used by mothers of multiples.
What bothered me is that North States is known for their infant gates, and couldn't come up with an optional gate to purchase with the play yard that would be easier for moms of multiples to use. Theres just no easy way to "push down one side while lifting up the other" when you are holding a BABY.
I am very disappointed with this system. I think its good for those only using it for one child, but for multiples (what its needed most for) its pretty inefficient.
Customer Review: Exactly what we were looking for. Summary: 4 Stars
We are very satisfied with our play yard. I bought the play yard so that my son, who had just started crawling, could have a safe place to crawl and play and so I could keep an eye on him. I actually will get in there with him and spend time playing so there is plenty of room for toys and children. I do recommend placing it on carpet because it can be pushed around easily otherwise. I have laminate wood floors and I purchased a carpet remnant to use underneath. My Son can stand and hold onto the side without it tipping over and I can easily get to him by stepping into the play yard over the side. There is no gate or door into the play yard once it is set up, you have to detach one of the sections to open it and it is not that easy to do this. If you are on the shorter side you might have trouble getting your child in and out. I also caution that if you want something portable this is not all that accommodating, I have folded it up and taken it to the grandparents house several times, but it is a pain to carry as the strap that comes with it does not stay snapped and It folds accordion style, which means that you have to fold some sections all the way back the opposite direction. Just be sure you have plenty of room to set up. The play yard met my needs, and for the price I would definitely purchase this again.
