Baby Products Reviews of North States Superyard 3 in 1 Metal Gate

Customer Review: Wonderful!
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this to set up for our 18 month old daughter, who has recently learned to climb out of her playpen. I wish this were about 4" taller, so she wouldn't be tall enough to scale it in a couple months, but that's my only complaint.

I had intended to set it up as a play yard, but my husband thought to try and see if it would fit all the way across our living room, and it did! Now she has so much more room to play.

It's pretty heavy, but I'm hoping that will mean she won't be able to push it around when we do use it as a play yard.
I'm really happy with this purchase. We bought two of the Evenflo Crosstown Soft Portable Travel Gates last week- total junk. The rubber stopper on one gate kept pulling off, even though it's secured by a screw and washer! They're on their way back to Amazon. They wouldn't stay put, or else it was near impossible to take them off the doorway. We have three kids, so it's not like we're unfamiliar with baby gear.

After the disappointment with the old gates, this one is a pleasant surprise!

Customer Review: Why didn't I buy this earlier?
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a dog, a wonderful dog. A dog who loves me wholeheartedly. The dog also loves anything that has a cord, such as keyboard cords, mouse cords, computer cords, lamp cords. I made the very bad mistake of thinking my loving dog could come into my office when I worked. He would gaze wistfully out the window, growl at the neighbor cats, then come and lay at my feet. Good dog.

Wrong.

Picture this. I'm a writer. I pick up my keyboard and start writing. Nothing. Voila! The keyboard cord has been eaten. (Several iterations of same scenario.)

I bought this play yard for my dog. I worried about it being sturdy enough. It is. I worried about setting it up. It's a breeze. I worried about it being easy to move. It's a snap.

I don't have it in the configuration shown on the picture, so I can't attest to the gate part. I have mine running from the window to the door in a rectangular shape, so my loving dog can sit beside me and we can have "togetherness" without him costing me a bloody fortune.

Customer Review: Sturdy, long-lasting, versatile
Summary: 5 Stars

We have owned 2 of these gate/enclosures for several months and are very happy with them. We first set the two 144"-long sets up as a large stand-alone pen when our twins were six months old. As someone else on Amazon suggested, we put bumpers around the inside perimeter so that our little crawlers would have less head-bumping. The enclosure was easy to assemble and sturdy.

When the twins turned ten months old, we took the enclosure apart and used the two sets to make two gates (to block off our living room) and to enclose a fireplace and a floor-to-ceiling window (we had to have another set of hardware for that; look in manual for phone number, although we had already bought another complete set for travel). We see these gate/enclosures lasting a long time and we will move them as needed to accomodate our babies' growth. No tools needed to assemble stand-alone pen, and just a little work to attach to walls (remember to attach to studs only as babies will rip them out of just drywall!)

Customer Review: Sturdy, Safe, Easy -- Just Really Small
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this product in that it is very sturdy, extremely easy to set up, and it keeps my baby safe so that I can do all those things that a person has to do in order to remain sane and keep her house from falling down around her. I can pour myself a bowl of cereal every morning, visit the bathroom when I need to, change the laundry over, even take the occasional shower without worrying that my little one will be chewing on lamp chords or tumbling down the basement stairs.

My one complaint is that, with only six sides, this is really very small. I might as well toss Elsie in her crib with her toys to keep her safe.

I recommend buying at least one set of extenders to make it an octagon or a square if you're going to use the play yard free-standing. Take that into consideration when doing a cost comparison.

Overall, though, I highly recommend having a pen for your crawling baby. It is a lifesaver for me (figuratively) and for my curious baby (maybe literally).

Customer Review: too small to be useful on its own
Summary: 1 Stars

On its own it confines baby to a very small area - need to use the wall on one side and hope that the gate can be configured to fit the house architecture. Didn't work for us. The pictures are misleading as to how large the enclosed play area is - you have to use 2 such gates in some of the pictures. In fact, the picture showing two kids playing together, has 8-panels, so it includes an extension. My son looked like he was doing time enclosed in this gate. Also, at only 8 months, he could shake it so hard it was bound to collapse. And yes, it did scratch the hardwood floors.

This gate and the sorry look of my kid confined in it trying to break out, convinced me for good that gates for babies are inhumane. I childproofed an entire room at first, and eventually the entire house, so the baby can roam around and explore. I only have gates at the top and bottom of the stairs, but that's it. I think it's much better for their development to create a "do touch" environment.
