Baby Products Reviews of North States Superyard 3 in 1 Metal Gate

Customer Review: Great gates!
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered 2 sets of these gates and got them about a month ago. So far they have worked out great. A little heavy which is what makes them so sturdy. Basically, I have a baby who is a horrible sleeper and he just won't sleep in a crib...he moves around too much in his sleep and needs more room then the tiny crib offers and he wakes up when I try to put him down in a crib because he feels that "dropping" sensation...anyways, my solution was to make a home-made crib using these gates surrounding a twin mattress. Besides having to put some padding/pillows around the inside perimeter to prevent him from hitting his head on the hard metal bars of the gates, the set up has worked out really well. I love that these have a door so I can open it and gently lay him down without waking him and unlike the crib he has lots of space to move around and I can even lay down with him now if needed. I was a little worried that the door didn't seem like it latched super strong, but I haven't had any problems with it. It is easy to open with one hand but would be too hard for a little one to do it. I also love the fact that they are versatile so I will be able to use them for years to come in a variety of ways.

So long story short: These gates are very sturdy in a variety of setups, nice looking, have a great door (a little narrow but I haven't had a problem and I'm no skinny minny), and work great! Although I think just one set is too small to work for much, so definitely order 2 and connect them or get 1 and the extention kit. They aren't cheap but I think they are worth it due to the quality and the fact that I will be able to use them with the next kid.

Side note: I had tried the North States Classic Superyard which is plastic, but they are too lightweight and shorter (although wider so 1 set has a bigger play area), and I didn't like that the classic has no door and is only usable in a hexagon shape. I also didn't like that eventually I think my kiddo could have learned how to climb over them because it has small holes in the gates. The Metal gate has just the vertical bars so no spots for kids to stick their feet in and start climbing.

Customer Review: 3-in-1 Metal Superyard
Summary: 5 Stars

We have three large dogs (all over 70 lbs - two of them recently adopted boxers); one will jump to greet you sometimes and all of them crowd the door. My mother lives with us and we were concerned that our fur kids would knock her when she opened the door to leave/return or answer it. They're used to having full run of the house so crating them would've been a last resort. I found this 3-in-1 gate, checked the various pictures (some from other sites), and it seemed like it would be perfect to put up around our front door. We have an oblong living room area and the front door is right up against the (closet door) wall.

We ordered this on Tuesday and received it on Thursday. It took me about 30 minutes to swap out some of the panels and place it around the front door entry. It may look a bit shoddy, but it keeps the fur kids away from the front door. It is currently not anchored to the wall, but by using all the panels it did make it a bit sturdier and will be easier to anchor it (when we do).

Overall, it seems to be made well, but seems if you use anymore than 3 panels in a straight line it may be shaky without anchoring it. We have 2 panels (straight) from the wall (front door), then 4 panels angled (almost like in the original "stop sign" configuration). The gate locks/unlocks by pushing a button, sliding it over, and lifting it all at the same time. Now I don't have to worry about my dogs unlocking it, but my mom may get a bit frustrated with it so we leave it unlocked (apparently with the runner we have on our floor, the gate slopes just enough that it will close by itself). If you are thinking about getting this for a play area for children, it seems a bit small in the "stop sign" configuration, but using it to block off an area with 2 walls could create a nice L-shaped play area as stated by another reviewer.

I would recommend this to others; however, additional panels may be needed depending on the intended use.

Customer Review: Solid product, and a snap to install
Summary: 4 Stars

We installed this product along an L shaped wall to create a play area for our 19 month old. The area is about 32 sq feet in size, and accommodates a small table with 2 chairs, and several of his toys. The installation took less than 3 hours, and that was with my 19 month old "helping". Without his "help", it would have been a couple hours at the most.
The product was fairly easy to install, just be sure to install the screws into the studs behind the drywall, or use some heavy duty drywall anchors if that is not an option. We have used this gate only for about a week now, so there's not much I can say for durability just yet. However, the first impressions are good. The product looks solidly built, and can be easily to set up to any shape or design you'd like without the need for even a screw driver (apart from the ends that are secured to the wall).
I would have given it 5 stars rather that the 4 I gave it, if it weren't for the door. The door does not swing open a full 180 degrees, it only opens 90 degrees. My son have already started pushing on the open door, and I suspect that it is only a matter of time before it will either break off or come apart. Then again, I could be wrong, and it might be sturdy enough to survive the abuse; only time will tell.

[Update on 05/14/08] After several months of use, my (positive) opinion of this product has not changed. In addition, my worries about the door have so far been unfounded. The door has survived the abuse from my son without any problems. At this point I would gladly rate this product with 5 stars, unfortunately it does not look like there is a way for me to update my initial rating.

Customer Review: Better than expected
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered direct from Amazon. It arrived two days later from FedEx even though I selected Free Shipping. The outside cardboard was a little torn up, but the interior product package and product itself was unharmed and well packaged by the manufacturer.

I know they list the length, but this gate is really long. It would be too small for my son in an octagonal shape, but I stretched it across my family room to keep him penned in where the toys and play mat are. It is a little heavy, but very sturdy. It folds away easy and the use of the included paper template makes attaching it to the wall fairly simple. I think the price on Amazon was very reasonable for the product considering store competitors are charging almost $30 more. Although it is a little taller at 30" in comparison to the plastic version by the same company, it is easy for my son to see through the bars when the TV is on.

If I had one minor gripe, and it is minor, the button you must push down to disengage the gate and open it is REALLY firm. It takes some hard thumb pressure to push it down and then you must lift up slightly to open the gate. I certainly don't think my 9 month old will be escaping that gate any time soon unless he learns to climb over. The best thing about it is that you can remove panels to make it smaller and you can move the panels around. I did this to place the gate in the center where it was more convenient for our use. Also, the gate closes automatically behind you and latches so there is little chance of "forgetting" to close it. That is nice. Overall, a worthy purchase, which I would do again.

Customer Review: north state superyard 3 n 1 metal gate
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been looking for a high quality play yard since our maltepoo climbed up and over a gate that had hortizontal and vertical slats. So we knew we had to get one that is only vertical slats to prevent him from climbing over and out. After long research of looking at many of them,we got two of these and connected them together to make one big one for our maltepoo puppy. He cannot climb out of this one because it has vertical slats. This is a very high quality gate. This is a gate that will definitely last for years to come. You won't have to buy another one to replace but you may buy another one to add to it to make it bigger. Worth every penny.OH! Color of this gate is like an almond color which I was quited pleased with it as I'm not a white color fan but I was willing to deal with it. Very good investment. Each set has a door big enough for an adult to walk through. You push down the button on top of the door and lift the door slightly up then open and you can easily walk thru. We got two so there is a gate on opposite sides which is very convienence for us. This is about 6 x 8 when two are connected. You can make it any shape you want. Circle, rectangler, square, or crooked. It's that flexible to work with.I felt one was too small for a puppy to play in it. We put our puppy in there with a puppy pad, toys and his water/food dish while we are at work during the day. Works for us. You can use all the panels or you can take apart and only use a few if you want to block an entrance or fireplace, etc. If you looking for pen, whether it for a toddler or pet, this is it!
