North States Extra Wide Swing Gate Large openings are often difficult to close off. The North States Extra Wide Swing Gate offers parents an affordable choice for closing off a large area for either a child or a pet. The Extra Wide allows children and pets to be confined to an area where mom or dad will have total supervision. It extends up to an amazing 8.5 feet (103 in.) and stands at 27 inches high. However, unlike other North States gates it does not work with small areas at all. The smallest opening it can work with is 5 feet (57 in.). It is great for blocking off a porch or other wide areas. The gate can be removed with ease from its hardware mount when not in place. The North States Extra Wide Swing Gate can swing out of the way with ease when not locked in place. I've realized that the success of this gate largely depends on the purpose that it serves. For the people who have complained about their toddler being able to knock it down, it says on the box that it is suitable for children under 24 months old. So if you have a 3 year old that you're trying to lock in, he'll probably knock that thing down.
As for me personally, I've been using this gate to block off my 8 month old Alaskan Klee Kai and 4 month old Shetland Sheepdog by either keeping them in the kitchen while I'm at work or out of the kitchen while I'm at home, so they can't poop and pee out of sight. When I'm at home, it serves its purpose of keeping them out of the kitchen where they like to hide if they're too lazy to go outside to use the bathroom. However, I tested this gate on 4 occasions with leaving my Alaskan Klee Kai in the kitchen while I'm gone, so he doesn't have to stay in the kennel, and he has gotten out 3 times. The first time, I have no idea how he got out, but I suspect that he jumped over it. The second time, he chewed up 4 or 5 rungs since it is made out of somewhat cheap wood. Then he was also able to rip the screws out of the wall. The third time was a success with keeping him in as I had doused the gate with vinegar and rubbing alcohol to deter him from chewing it. When I came home the fourth time, he had managed to chew the rungs up some more, and ripped one of the rungs entirely off and flung it across the kitchen. Alas, I have given up on trying to contain him in the kitchen while I'm gone, and each time he has managed to get out, he hasn't destroyed anything else in the house, so it's all a test of trust at this point.
So yes, I'm a little disappointed by the gate, but it still limits their movement to just the living room when I am home, and forces them to let me know when they have to go outside.
