Baby Products Reviews of North States Supergate Auto-Close Metal GateCustomer Review: Prevents falls down stairs Summary: 4 Stars
I owned a safety first gate that used pressure to close. It worked okay except it was hard to open once locked. So a lot of times we would just shut the door and not lock it... This was not a major issue as our baby was a crawler and didn't know how to open the gate. But then we discovered that adults would forget to shut the gate... As soon as our baby learned to walk, she was so excited she would take off as fast as she could and before you know it, someone forgot to shut the gate and down the stairs she went. It was one of the most horrifying experiences ever. Fortunately the baby was not hurt, just scared by the experience as were we. So we started to search for an automatically shutting gate. They weren't easy to come by, this was one of the only ones that has the feature but it is great. We have one at the top and at the bottom of the stairs. There is no need to worry that someone forgot to shut the gate... as it does it automatically. It is a slightly loud clang but it is reassuring to know that it is shut behind you. We recommend using the hardware to screw the pieces into the wall for added security. The reason why we didn't give this a 5 star rating is because of the difficulty in assembling the gate.... wasn't super easy to understand... and because of the loud clanging noise. Also the total cost after buying the extensions is a bit high... but oh well. We are just thrilled to know our baby won't go tumbling down the stair again at our place.
Customer Review: best baby gate Summary: 5 Stars
We got this gate for our front door which leads to a couple of steps. Now that our daughter is crawling/cruising and almost walking and with summer temperatures rising we wanted to be able to let her explore the house safely and be able to keep the door open.
The gate is easy to install and fits very tightly in our door frame (so much so that we didn't have to screw in the cups to make it a permanent gate. The standard gate extension that is included with the gate will make it work for pretty much any door frame so you only need to order an additional extension if your door or opening is extra wide.
The bars are close enough your baby can't go through but still leaves you with a view.
We love the auto-close features, very handy when coming in/out with both your arms full.
The downsides:
1) you have to watch your step when using it so as to not trip over the floor bar
2) you'll have to show everyone how to use it, the opening mechanism is easy to operate once you know how it works and kids will never figure it out, but it will take an adult some time too if you dont show them.
I would recommend this gate, well worth the price.
Customer Review: Thought Latch Was Faulty - but it's not! Summary: 4 Stars
UPDATE: We contacted North States regarding what we thought was a faulty latch, and they did get back to us with new installation instructions. It wasn't a problem with the gate at all. It was the assembly instructions that were incomplete. The gate works perfectly now. The issue was the pressure against the wall. The new instructions better described the tension required to approximate the side section to the "door" of the gate, and it now locks with ease. It withstands the cats jumping over it while keeping the dogs out of areas where they shouldn't be.
I'm pleased that I didn't return the gate.
PREVIOUS REVIEW: This might be a nice gate if it indeed locked. It does not and it takes maybe 2 pounds of pressure to open it. I bought this so I could keep my dogs out of areas in my home, but all they have to do is scratch at the bottom of the gate to open it. There is no reason to use the latch (for lack of a better word) at the top of the gate, becausee it does not latch into anything. There is actually nothing there for the retracting "latch" to latch in to.
Customer Review: Good for one year, if you are lucky. Poorly engineered, inferior materials. Summary: 1 Stars
I originally liked this gate very much. I bought two of them. They installed easily and worked well - for a while. It is one year later. The springs on both gates are shot and the gates do not close automatically - sorth of a misnomer for an "auto close" gate. I had to rig a small bungee cord to each gate to pull them closed. The latches on both gates have broken several times. While you can order replacement parts on-line, the original part design is deficient - they should not break so easily! I am an engineer and I know good part design. These are not well engineered. The size and shape of the parts causes them to be weak by design. The materials used in the manufacture of these gates is inferior. Bottom line - this is NOT a durable gate and over time will cost you more money in upkeep to replace broken parts. It is more trouble than it is worth.
Put your hard earned money into a different gate that is made in the USA of quality materials - one that is well designed to endure the many openings and closings that a gate will experience over its lifetime.
Customer Review: Sturdy Gate, Auto-Close Hardware Immediately Failed Summary: 3 Stars
This is a strong, sturdy and nice looking gate, that was relatively easy to install. However, the key selling point to me was that the gate automatically closes on its own and after about twelve uses (yes, only twelve) the gate failed to close on its own and I now have to manually lift the lever and then close the gate. I called the manufacturing company (not amazon)and asked if they could send me the replacement hardware (springs that go inside gate) and they said "no". I was informed my only resolution was to return the entire item to Amazon and I would be sent a replacement gate. We are a busy family, with two working parents and I am not going to spend the time re-packaging this very large item to ship back, then have to wait for another one to be shipped to me. Never mind the re-install job! Poor customer service. I decided to keep the gate as it is, although it is very over priced as a regular, manual gate.
