Baby Products Reviews of NTM-910YLW - Sony Baby Call Nursery Monitor

Customer Review: Pretty Good...But...
Summary: 4 Stars

I have two of these monitors, one for each daughter. The first I've owned for over 5 years now. The second I've owned for over 2 years.

The Good (or Great even...)
1. The monitor has a voice activated mode. This is a must have for me. It means that you hear nothing (not even dead air) unless your baby makes a noise. This is key for when you're trying to sleep. I tried a cheaper Fisher Price model which was always "on" and the sound drove me crazy.
2. Rechargeable Batteries - This means that whenever you plug it in, it's re-charging. You never have to worry when you unplug it that the batteries might be dead.
3. The handle is useful for carrying it around. It has a clip on the back as well for carrying around.
4. Lots of channels.

The Bad...
1. This monitor is not good if you need a longer range.
2. Sometimes, the range alarm will come on even though the monitor hasn't moved. This can be very annoying when it happens in the middle of the night. This almost never happens with my older monitor but happens quite often with the newer monitor...though the newer monitor is being used in a farther away room, so that's likely the cause.
3. I wish the volume dial was more of a "click" dial, so that it was difficult to turn the dial. Sometimes, you (or a super curious child) will accidentally turn the dial, and you don't realize it.

All in all, the monitor is quite good for the price. I couldn't find many models with the rechargable batteries and voice activation, and those were some of the most important features for me.

Customer Review: Not a bad monitor.
Summary: 4 Stars

We purchased this monitor a few weeks ago to replace our Angelcare monitor, which we loved but are putting aside for our second child (review here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R23JPV5VZHAZMF/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm). Since our son is two, he no longer needs to be monitored with a motion sensor, and based on the reviews of the Babycall, along with the affordability, we decided to give this one a shot.

At first, I really didn't like it. There was tons of interference, and it would make random clicking noise throughout the night, or would just start beeping if I turned over. It took quite a few tries through the channels to finally find a channel that worked for us. It's still not perfect, but overall, it's certainly more tolerable than the out of the box settings.

I do really like the rechargable batteries over, the Angelcare's need for four AAA batteries per unit, which when you have three and travel, that's a whole lot of batteries you're going through.

Noise wise, it seems to pick up background noises easier than the Angelcare. We have an air purifier in our son's room for white noise and the Angelcare was less sensitive to it, so the purifier was just slight background noise, whereas the babycall seems to be more sensitive in picking up that noise and it's sometimes harder to hear my son. Since he's a little older, I don't really worry so much about it, but if you have an infant and are using something for white noise, this may be a factor in your consideration of this monitor.

Overall, it's a solid quality monitor for the price.

Customer Review: Not as great as they say...
Summary: 2 Stars

Let me start this review with the fact that not every monitor works well in every house. It's just like cordless phones, you have to keep trying until you find one that works with your house well.

We purchased this monitor for our second child based on the great reviews. Unfortunately, we haven't had the same luck as the other reviewers. The monitor has an annoying feature where it beeps if it is out of range - that would be great, but it is ALWAYS out of range. If I walk into the baby's room or anywhere near the monitor at night the receiver beeps (loudly) constantly. That isn't really helpful when everyone else is trying to sleep.

Also, this unit doesn't have the option for the "child" unit to work on backup batteries. This was a nice feature we found on our old baby monitor by The First Years. That means you have to unplug it and move it around if your baby doesn't necessarily sleep in the same place all of the time (my son sleeps in our pack n play for naps during the day). So I am constantly plugging and unplugging the unit and moving it around which is a pain.

That being said, it does have nice sound when not beeping. Also, it has a great "voice activated" feature that blocks out background noise unless the baby is crying. So if you have a mobile on, you won't be hearning that while you are trying to sleep unless that baby starts crying and activates the monitor.

This one is going back (if Babies R Us will take it). We are going with a "First Years" monitor like our old one. We never really had problems with it until it finally died (like they all do eventually).

Customer Review: CRYSTAL CLEAR WHICH IS WHAT YOU WANT!
Summary: 5 Stars

I HAD AN EVENFLO MONITOR THAT I RECIEVED FOR MY BABYSHOWER 3 AND A HALF YEARS AGO FOR MY FIRST CHILD. I LOVED IT. AFTER BEING ON FOR THOSE 3 AND A HALF YEARS STRAIGHT IT STARTED TO BEEP, SOUNDING LIKE AN ALARM CLOCK AND FINALLY I SAID I HAD TO BUY A NEW ONE. THAT ONE IS DISCONTINUED SO AFTER LOOKING AROUND I CHOOSE THIS SONY ONE. JUST LIKE MY OTHER EVENFLO IT HAS A RECHARGABLE BATTERY. THAT IS AWESOME. EVERYTIME I EVER NEEDED TO TAKE MY MONITOR OUTSIDE IT WAS ALWAYS READY. ANOTHER THING WHICH I FUND INTERESTING IT IS ALSO WATER RESISTANT. SO WHEN YOUR BABY IS NAPPING YOU CAN TAKE A QUICK DIP IN THE POOL AND KEEP THAT MONITOR RIGHT BY YOU POOL SIDE. OR IF YOU ARE LIKE ME WITH TWO BABIES ONE CAN BE IN THEIR KIDDIE POOL WHEN YOU ARE RELAXING OUTSIDE.(SUMMERS COMING!) ALSO IT IS SO CRYSTAL CLEAR. YOU DON'T HEAR AN OUNCE OF STATIC. IT ALSO HAS A VOICE ACTIVATION FEATURE WHICH I CHOSE NOT TO USE. BUT SEEMED TO WORK WHEN I TRIED IT. I RATHER HEAR MY SON MOVING OR PLAYING ASAP RATHER THAN THE MONITOR CLICKING ON ONLY BECAUSE HE IS CRYING. THIS AND THE EVENFLO MONITOR I JUST THREW OUT ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES I OWN. I ALSO HAVE THE SAFETY FIRST GLO ONE WITH TWO RECEIVERS. SAVE YOUR MONEY IT IS HORRIBLE. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR WITH THAT ONE. I ALSO HAVE THE VIDEO MONITOR BUT SAFETY FIRST IT ALSO IS GOOD. IT IS JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS AS A "FIRST TIME " PARENT YOU THINK YOU NEED. THOUGH YOU DO GET A CLEAR PICTURE OF THE BABY EVEN IN THE DARK. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS SONY ONE TO EVERYONE. ALL I DO SAY IS SPEND THE 10 DOLLARS MORE FOR THIS MODEL THAN THE ONE WITHOUT THE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY. FROM EXPERIANCE.

Customer Review: WOW!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

(Written Dec 14, 2004) This is the best monitor I have ever seen!!! We purchased this monitor because of the 27 channel feature! We live in a very young neighborhood- in fact out of the 8 houses on our culdesac, 7 have babies or young children and therefore use monitors. We were the last household to have a child and we already knew that our neighbors constantly picked up each other's children due to not having enough channels or had gone through multiple monitors due to bad reception! We figured this monitor was the best chance to hear our son and not someone else's!!! Boy- were we right!!! This monitor picks up everything in our little boy's room- right down to the hum of the ceiling fan! The best feature is actually the voice activated feature. If you set it to this feature the monitor is silent unless your child makes any noise. This has been excellent because we don't have to hear all of the background noise (such as the ceiling fan) but if our son even wimpers it will activate and we can hear exactly what is happening in the room. This monitor has been so great many of our friends are actually considering throwing out their monitors and purchasing this one!!!

(Updated April 8, 2006) It has now been 18 months since we first bought this monitor and it is still AMAZING! Our little boy is now a toddler & we use the monitor CONSTANTLY and it still works like new. We always hear him as clear as if he were in the same room & we do not have a problem picking up other families' monitors or phone calls. Definately one of the best & most useful baby products we own.
