Baby Products Reviews of NTM-910YLW - Sony Baby Call Nursery MonitorCustomer Review: A very good monitor! Summary: 5 Stars
We have had this monitor since my daughter (now 28 months old) was only 6 months old. We had a First Years monitor before that that was pretty decent, but after only having it 6 months, the batteries exploded in it. Not sure if that was a First Years defect, or a battery defect, but we decided to go with this monitor instead based on good reviews.
First, if you have wireless, cell phones, neighbors... you're most likely going to get SOME static. So accept it and move on. We live in a townhome, so we definitely have close neighbors. We have wireless in our bedroom, and every night, I lay my Blackberry right down next to this monitor, and I only ocassionally have problems (VERY rare though). The main time that we have static problems is when my husband forgets it's in his pocket and goes into my daughters room. If you get the base and the receiver too close together, it goes berserk.
That being said, there are 27 different channels, so keep trying until you find one that works for you and doesn't give you a ton of static. There is most definitely going to be one that works.
We really like the voice activation feature. This is great when we are downstairs watching a movie, or outside, or doing chores. At night, I keep it on full time because the sudden voice activation (like say, if my daughter coughs) scares the living daylights out of me. :-) But the VA is great for daytime activities. The rechargable nature of the parent monitor is fantastic too. You don't have to be plugged in all the time to hear them.
I think for the money, and for the features, this is one of the best monitors you will find.
Customer Review: Overpriced for What It Offers Summary: 3 Stars
To start off with the sound quality of this monitor is excellent.
From there things deteriorate. The ergonomics need help. The buttons and knobs are small and fiddly and very difficult to use with one hand. Howerver, the style and shape are very pleasing and the loop at the top is convenient. While the instructions make it clear that the hook is not to be used to carry the units it was cleary designed for this purpose.
From a performance perspective the range is quite poor. That is my primary disappointment with this monitor. I live in a relativly small home and can barely get to my garage before it starts beeping at me. I think this is mainly the fault of the very short antenna wire housed in the top loop.
I havent had any problems with interferance with other radios, TVs or monitors so that has been a plus. With 27 channels to choose from I think anyone should be able to find a workable frequency.
The rechargable battery is a nice option and one of the reasons this unit costs more than the less expensive Sony version.
But overall, this unit is far too expensive for the feature set and the very limited range it offers. Considering that you can buy far more sophisticated two-way GMRS family radios at this price I think it is ridiculous that Sony would offer such an inferior feature set on this type of radio product. This unit dosen't live up to the Sony reputation for offering quality and innovation.
Pros:
Style
Sound quality
Rechargable battery
Cons:
Price
Poor range
Small buttons and controls
Limited feature set
Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
We got this as a gift for our son being born two and a half years ago, and we LOVE this monitor! When he was a newborn, I was always afraid to put it on the voice activation setting, because I was afraid it wouldn't work, but it works perfectly. The battery on it is great, and has worked many occasions overnight when I've forgotten to plug it in, which is great. We have a 2000sf house, and the range alarm rarely, if ever comes on. If it does come on we just move it an inch or two and that usually does the trick. My parents live next door to us, and when they babysit they take the monitor over there and it works great. There usually is a little bit of the range alarm until they move it next to the window, but that isn't a problem at all. We also live on over an acre, and the monitor works almost everywhere if I'm working in the yard while he's napping. It does have a little interference if it's too close too the cell phone or computer, but we just keep it in the same spot now, so no worries.
We did have a problem with it last summer when my husband accidently dropped it in a bucket of water, and it didn't work for a day or two. I sadly bought a new monitor (can't remember the brand though) and I missed the BabyCall so much! This monitor didn't have the voice activation, so I had to listen to static all night, plus the battery sucked. It would work for about 10 minutes and then you had to plug it in. But, after the BabyCall had dried off completely, it worked again, and I took the other crappy monitor back. We've used this one for over 2.5 years now, and we'll definitely be using it again when we have another baby. Highly reccommended!!!
Customer Review: Not a great monitor Summary: 2 Stars
I received this as a baby gift, but my husband and I also like Sony products and felt that it would be a good quality monitor. We were wrong. True..it has great clarity, you can hear the baby breathing when you turn it up. The problem I have is that the reciver gives off this loud interference noise, which you can hear across the house. One night the noise went off every 2 minutes, kept us awake, I finally brought the baby into our room. If you move or walk at any distance from the receiver it make a loud interferance noise too. Then the receiver keeps on beeping that it is out of range, weather you are 10 feet or 100 feet away from the other unit. I called Sony, they were not much help. Yes, we unplugged almost every electronic thing in the house to see if it helped and it did not. Sony, went through trouble shooting this unit, then told me to send it in to a warehouse to be fixed. They do not send any label or pay for shipping for this item to be repaired. You then have to right an explaination as to what is exactly wrong with the unit. I just talked to a tech, they typed everything up, now I have to do it again. I had something from first years that was not working and I contacted them, they sent me a shipping label, for me to send the product to them. Plus, they keep the problems you have on record by name. They have all the details there. I thought this would be a great item, yes, it's clear. But I want something that I can use that won't startle us at night or keep on going off during the day. I was thankful that we kept the box and the store is taking it back, we can get a in store credit and find a different monitor.
Customer Review: hearing baby a mile away Summary: 4 Stars
Excellent monitor. This is the 2nd monitor that I purchased. I'm very thankful that I did not go through the horrors of searching for the perfect monitor. My first monitor was by Fisher-Price. I can't remember the full name of it; it was such a piece of junk. It claimed to have a vibrating feature as well as a walkie feature. Neither of which worked. I couldn't get any sound other than static out of the Fisher Price monitor. I wasn't sure if it was defective or not. I didn't want to bother with a duplicate so I returned the Fisher Price and got the Sony Baby Call instead. Unfortunately the Baby Call does not have a vibrating or walkie feature, but after my experience with the previous monitor I didn't care about those features anymore. I just wanted something that was clear and loud. Sony provided that for me in this monitor. I'm able to hear my daughter no matter where I am in my apartment, and I live in a decent size apartment, so this is a big plus. I'm even able to go outside and still be able to hear her with no interference. You also save money on batteries. The receiver comes with rechargable batteries.
The only drawback about the Sony is that I pick up a lot of phone conversations when I have it set on certain channels. Probably because I live in an apartment complex. This problem of mine was easily fixed with the 27 channels I had to choose from. I've had the monitor for almost 2 years now, and it's still in good, working condition.
As for the Fisher Price monitor, I don't see it on the store shelves anymore. Unless there's a newer model. Anyway, you won't be disappointed with Sony's Baby Call.
