Baby Products Reviews of NTM-910YLW - Sony Baby Call Nursery MonitorCustomer Review: Go Digital Summary: 2 Stars
While a major improvement over our first 47MHz "crazy-static" monitor, we had problems with this one as well. The primary con was that our neighbor's phone interfered with the monitor. Whenever their phone rang, an extremely loud eletronic sound would come over the monitor followed often by their conversation (pre-teen Sally apparently has a thing for Bobby and they're going to eat lunch together in the cafeteria tomorrow). I switched to every other channel on the monitor, but no luck, I could not escape the neighbor's phone. The other major con was that the range alarm would often go off, even when the monitor should have been "in range". Changing channels would sometime fix this, but its hard to change channels when your baby is asleep with the monitor in his room... oh, and the range alarm is annoying - couldn't sleep with it going off. Finally, it is unsecure, as are all but the two digital monitors currently on the market. So, your neighbors could potentially pick up your monitor's signal and hear all the goofy things you say to your child...
The major pro is that the sound quality, when it is working, is great. Sony is known for sound quality. You could stream your MP3's over this thing just fine... as long as your neighbor's phone doesn't ring. It also has a sound-activation switch which turns on the monitor only when your child makes a noise. Oh, and the rechargeable battery is cool too.
In short, if you can swing it, go for one of the spendier digital monitors. While still in their infancy, the one we have (iMonitor) has excellent sound quality, range, it is mostly secure, and it is largely unaffected by interference. And, you'll be able to sleep knowing only your child will wake you up, not the neighbor-kid's love life. And parental sleep is the name of the game with a newborn...
If you live in the country, far away from neighbors, consider this monitor.
Customer Review: Great monitor - for 2 months, don't expect Sony warranty help without a receipt Summary: 2 Stars
We registered for this model on babies r us and received it as a gift. For the first 2 months we had this monitor it worked superbly and my wife and I were very happy with it. After that time though it started hissing and having interference problems for no apparent reason. The range alarm feature also began malfunctioning and it would beep loudly at random intervals, even in the middle of the night. That was a bummer because as I said before we really liked this model. We tried different channels and kept a record of which ones worked better but no matter which one we tried they all had problems with reception and the beeping.
For practical purposes then we needed to replace it and couldn't send it off for repair and be without a monitor. We bought the Graco imonitor Digital Baby Monitor as a replacement and it has worked very well.
I still wanted to get the Sony monitor repaired if possible since someone else could use it so I called Sony service and the person I spoke with politely told me I needed to produce a receipt in order to get warranty service. I explained it was a gift and that I didn't have the receipt and he told me I would need to contact the person who gave it to me to get a copy or get one from the store. I thought that was highly impractical and told him so. It didn't make me want to buy another Sony product anytime soon.
Though there are good reviews about this product I've also seen others that are similar to my experience with it. I'd recommend keeping a copy of a gift receipt or your original receipt if you get this monitor or any other one for that matter.
As I mention above, the Graco imonitor Digital Monitor has very good reception and gets a thumbs up from me. We also tried a Fisher Price Private Connection model which had a high level of interference and I would recommend steering clear of that one.
Customer Review: Great Battery Life, Good Product Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great baby monitor. This is my first child and my first baby monitor that I've owned so I don't have a ton of first hand experience but so far this product has been great. I did a lot of research before buying this monitor and for the money, this seems to be fantastic. Pros: comes with rechargeable batteries. Also, it's got a long battery life--I plug it in at night to charge it, and then use it all day long for my daughter's naps and never need to plug it back in to recharge. It's got multiple channels so if you are ever getting a bad connection just try another one. It's not like some baby monitors where all you see are red lights blinking when the baby is crying. This one you can actually hear the baby crying and it picks up the sounds really well (like the clock in my daughter's room--I'm not bothered by that, I actually like it because I love the sound of clocks haha). I like that it's small and compact and you can take it with you anywhere. It has this clip you can attach to your belt (if you really wanted to) which I guess is cool, but not necessary in my opinion. I like that it has a volume control on the side which can really go high if need be. The cons: sometimes it creates static for no reason at all. There will be no interference in the room and you haven't even moved the monitor but for some freakish reason it starts buzzing all over the place. It takes a minute to calm down, but it goes back to normal. Also when the microwave is turned on, it buzzes and freaks out, so just turn it off for the time you are using the microwave if you don't want to hear the noise. There is a low hum when in use, but to me that's not a huge deal because it's just white noise (I can definitely sleep through it and I've a very light sleeper). Overall this is a great monitor for me and I have found it very useful--I use it multiple times a day. It's great for the price!!
Customer Review: Best monitor on the market Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I are expecting our second child. We recently moved my son out of the nursery and into his own room. We have a video monitor for the nursery but still wanted something for him as well. We hit the jackpot with this monitor! This monitor has no static. When I say no static, I mean none! I plugged the transmitter into his room then plugged in the receiver into our room. It was perfect right out of the box and I didn't even need to play with the 27 channels to find a good frequency. I have taken the receiver all over our house and even outside in the yard and have yet to get any static. My favorite feature of this monitor is the voice-activated mode. This is a great feature for two reasons. First, this monitor is so sensitive to sound that I can hear my son when he's in the next room. And second, my son loves his music and wants it on at bedtime and naptime. This makes things somewhat difficult for me to sleep because I hear it through the monitor. When the voice activated mode is switched on, it blocks out all other noises and you hear nothing until your child makes a sound. Having the rechargeable battery is also a plus. Not only does it allow you to become mobile, but it also saves you from buying new batteries every few weeks. We tried two different monitors when my son was young before getting the video monitor. Both ended up back at the store because there was so much static it drove us crazy. We were so frustrated that we decided to spend the money and get a video monitor hoping that the 2.4 GHz would eliminate the static. Had we been aware of this Sony back then, we could have saved ourselves the extra cost. If you are planning to get a monitor for yourselves or as a gift for expecting parents, take my advice and spend the little extra that this costs. You will not be sorry.
Customer Review: Best monitor out there - well worth the $ Summary: 5 Stars
Having read many reviews, I just want to let anyone who reads through here that you can't go wrong with this monitor.
Whenever you read reviews on Amazon, you're bound to see a handful of unhappy reviews --- I myself saw concerns with the
range of this one, which, given the numerous *positive* reviews about the range I read, I discounted. This is also the top-rated
monitor in the Baby Bargains book (one of the baby gear bibles). All I can say is this: after the exceptionally easy set-up, I ran a test by having my wife on the phone with her parents in the baby's room (he's not here quite yet!), and I took the other unit downstairs, then out of the house, and into the backyard --- crystal clear! BUT wait, there's more. After traveling the perimeter of the backyard, with nary a static to be heard (probably about 150 feet from the baby's room, and one floor down). Then I walked out the front door, hung a left down the street, and didn't get a "range" alarm until I was past my neighbor's house!! And even then, despite the range alarm, I could hear my wife chatting with her parents. AND HERE'S THE KICKER: we had the laptop on in the next room, hooked up wirelessly to our 5-year old wireless router (not the newest tech out there, certainly), and my wife was on her cellphone with a bluetooth headset!! And no interference to be found! The only time I hit any static at all is if I held my blackberry right up to the unit, and made a phone call. So, in summary: WOW. With 27 channels, this Sony BabyCall is tops. It has good volume controls, and I ALSO tested it out with the voice activation feature, by putting my head in the crib (the monitor was about 3 feet away) and *whispering* , which my wife could hear on the monitor from downstairs! I can't think of anything more you could want from this type of product.
