Baby Products Reviews of NTM-910YLW - Sony Baby Call Nursery MonitorCustomer Review: This Monitor Rocks!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this monitor just a few weeks before my son was born, thinking like many parents that my darling baby would be home and sleeping in his own room in his crib, and wouldn't it be nice to hear him before he really got screaming at night???
Well as things work out, he slept in a basinette in with my husband and I for the first five months. This monitor was used for little other than naps or the occasional evening where my husband and I would have company in our converted garage, and need to hear the baby if he woke up. Even for that occasional use, this monitor was great! It let me walk around our entire house and didn't beep that I was too far away (though the mail box was 50/50).
Once the little man grew into his crib (and by him, I mean Dad and I), we really grew to rely on this thing. There is nothing scarier than going from your little precious next to you every night, hearing every sigh and snore, to moving them halfway across the world (5 feet door to door) into their own bedroom! The first few nights were awful! I had this thing on "ON" all night. I'd run in with every little noise to see if he was ok. Finally I figured out the "Voice Activated" thing, and all was good. It only goes off when he makes a noise that is audible enough to have woken me had he still been sleeping beside me. I get to sleep through all those sweet little grunts and snores now. The adjustable volume setting is great too. On about the second notch, its loud enough to wake me up when my son really fusses and needs something - before he becomes crying uncontrollably baby. On the third notch, its fully loud enough to hear any noises above the sounds of adults hanging out, listening to music and talking maybe a little too loud. Oh, and its awesome in the shower! I would take this in the shower when the baby was smaller (and sleep less reliable), and get that same ever-important heads-up (the crying before screaming one) how quickly I needed to get out, or if I could shave the other leg!

We tried a 900Mhz monitor with two channels that sold for much less, and after one day I was back to the store looking for something better. I came home with this, and I have never regretted paying the extra $$. We live in an apartment, and we did have to try several different channels before we found one without interference, but we have not had to switch channels since. The sound is crystal clear. One reviewer talked about being able to hear his child breathe... I have never heard the rise and fall of breath over the white noise in the background, but maybe I don't have the transmitter close enough to my sleeping child. I have been perfectly satisfied with what I do hear. The volume levels are great -- it goes from so quiet that you can't hear a peep to loud enough to be heard over a noisy vaccuum. The lights are very useful as a visual clue to the noise level. (Note: You do have to find that "just right" spot on the volume control at night, so that baby's noises are audible but will not blast right in your ear. The second night we had it, we accidentally left the volume too low and so my poor muffin was on his own all night for the very first time.) I love the voice activation setting -- we use that at night so that we only hear him if he cries. But during the day I frequently use the straight "on" setting so that I can tell if he is sleeping or just quietly playing in his crib. The battery life is great. I frequently forget to turn it off all day, and the battery has never died on me. I do plug it in for a good 9+ hours every night. I am also happy with the water-resistant aspect. I use it in the kitchen and bathroom without fear. The receiver is one of my son's favorite toys, as well, and I am sure he has drooled on it quite a bit with no damage. The belt clip is a joke, and the receiver is rather bulky to attach it to yourself, anyway, but that is not what I use it for. We have used this monitor daily for almost a year, and we are very happy with our choice.
Customer Review: Your other parent friends will be jealous of your monitor Summary: 5 Stars
Way to go Sony! This is a great monitor. We took this on vacation with some friends who also have young ones. Their baby monitors all constantly hummed static; this monitor only cut on (voice activated!) when the baby made noise. My friends also drug around their corded listener monitors wherever we went and plugged them in. Mine didn't need plugging in, it had plenty of charge for many nights without being plugged in.
What I like:
- Voice activated feature. I can leave it on all night and will hear no hum or static, just the baby.
- Rechargable battery lasts a long time. We've used our monitor for 9 months now, I try to plug it in when I go to bed at night but sometimes don't...it has to go 3-4 nights for me to run out of battery. I also love not replacing batteries.
- Great voice quality. Some monitors you can barely make out the baby for the static. This is NOT one of those monitors.
- It's water resistant, good if you're washing dishes.
- Like the lights on it to indicate sound, great if you're in a loud area but still want to monitor your baby.
- Study construction. I also like the look of the monitor, no pointy antenna.
- VERY sensitive microphone. I can hear the clock tick (which is across the room from the base device) and can certainly hear the baby breathe. The voice activated feature is not cut on by things like the clock or baby breathing but by more abrupt noises, which is nice.
I occasionally get chirping sounds or wierd interference from the monitor, but not enough to make me think twice about the monitor. (Like I might hear one or two funny noises from it in a whole night). Wierdly, I never get any noise or interference if my monitor is plugged in, and since the plug is on my nightstand, I never get woken up at night from non-baby noises. If you're getting tons of noise, perhaps your house is overloaded with interference or maybe you just have a dud; this is a really great monitor.
Customer Review: Horrible interference, loses signal, pops and beeps Summary: 1 Stars
I too registered for this monitor based on the large number of favorable reviews on Amazon. After using this monitor for 5 months, I can give you this one piece of advice:
DO NOT BUY THIS BABY MONITOR
We live in a 900 sf apartment. Our babies room is no more than 20 feet from the furthest room in our apartment, the living room, where we keep the receiver. The monitor beeps, pops, clicks, and hisses so much that you are forced to turn it down, which kind of defeats the purpose of a baby monitor. The interference follows some kind of arcane rules ;for example, whenever someone walks in the "line of sight" between the monitor and the receiver, horrible interference. When the receiver is placed on the coffee table, terrible interference. If you even attempt to carry the monitor into one part of our living room, constant beeping. This thing is useless. We have tried switching the channels to every conceivable combination and none of them make any difference.
To top it off, the nifty "voice activation" feature that theoretically turns of the receiver when there's no noise does not work. If you have ANY source of background noise, such as an air purifier, within 6 feet of the monitor it stays on constantly. It is such a treat to have to hear not only the beeps and static from the monitor but also the constant tinny hum of our air purifier throughout the house.
When we were shopping for another monitor for my mother-in-laws' house we bought a $19.99 Graco monitor at Target that is crystal clear, even though the nursery is TWO STORIES below the area where we keep the receiver.
Skip this monitor.
Pros: Water resistant, switchable channels, voice activated (in theory)
Cons: Terrible interference, range alarm constantly beeps, channel switching does nothing, voice activation is triggered by constant background noise
Customer Review: THIS IS THE BEST !!! Summary: 5 Stars
OK.... I have to say when I had my first son 14 years ago (was only 17 then) I was given a couple of different monitors as gifts. Well, they pretty much all really sucked. I know one was a Fisher Price and I can't remember the other one. The sound quality of the were poor! I remember lots of static. Needless to say I returned them and got the Sony one. I quickly found out then that it was the best!!! I didn't have any problems with reception or the battery life. It was an all around PERFECT baby monitor. So, when I found out I was pregnant in 2002, you better believe I went straight to the Sony Baby Monitor. My hubby was looking at the "features" of other brands, like the fancy light show and they are just silly in my opinion. I didn't even give the others a second thought and I have to say I am just as happy with this Sony as I was with the one 14 years ago. I don't know what it is.... just something about the name Sony being with something electronic sounds better than Fisher-Price (am I the only one that thinks of toys when I hear it? Little People come to mind). Anyway...... I also need to note I live in an apartment and I really have no complaints. I think maybe once or twice we have been able to hear a neighbors phone conversation but that would happen with any monitor once in awhile. There are 27 different channels so it's a quick fix! The rechargeable battery is also a life saver or should I say money saver?!?! 14 years ago the battery wasn't rechargeable, so this is a great addition to an already PERFECT monitor! While the batteries didn't run out much before, this is just one less worry (not having to make sure you have batteries incase the monitor would run out). To make a long story short. This is the monitor you need! This is the monitor you want! I recommend to all my friends and co-workers! Why waste your money and time on the others when this is the BEST monitor!?!
