Baby Products Reviews of NTM-910YLW - Sony Baby Call Nursery MonitorCustomer Review: Such a good, clear monitor!!! Also a great second monitor if you have two young children!! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased this monitor as a second monitor for our house. We are expecting a new baby and still have a young toddler that needs to be monitored. Our first monitor was the Angelcare Movement Sensor with Sound Monitor. We loved this monitor when our son was just a baby because of the peace of mind it provided. We are planning on using this for our new baby and needed a second monitor for our toddler. We love this monitor for the following reasons.
1. This monitor has 27 channels that are easily set (a color code system using red, green, and yellow) and easily changed. You can use this monitor without interference from another monitor, cordless phones, our wireless network, cell phones, or other devices.
2. This monitor is so clear. Before purchasing this one we tried several others. All night we heard static. This monitor is silent until you hear sounds from baby. It is so clear we can even hear breathing!
3. This monitor has a great range. We have a house over 3,000 square feet and property of almost half an acre. This monitor allows us to be at the opposite end of the house or out in our yard (So nice after everyone is asleep to be able to sit outside in the summer time! :-) ) and we can still monitor our child and know if he needs us.
4. No batteries. If you are like us, everything in your house seems to take batteries, especially all those children's toys!!! This monitor is one of the only ones I have found with a rechargeable battery pack that charges itself when the monitor is plugged in. We plug it in our bedroom every night and all day we leave it unplugged as we move around the house. This is one item where I don't have to get out the screwdriver and replace the batteries every 5 days. I love this maintenance free feature.
Yes - I know other reviewers have complained about the out of range alarm going off. We noticed that at first and figured out that we were walking through the signal path. It really had nothing to do with the monitors range. Now I just put it up on our breakfast bar, or some other place that is higher up and we are not having any problems.
Customer Review: Clear sound, works fine with wireless network Summary: 4 Stars
We got this monitor when our son was one week old and it immediately simplified our lives. We get very clear sound from the monitor. We did not have to adjust what "channel" it's broadcasting on -- just left it as it came out of the package. It's good and quiet -- no electrical humming noises. During the day, when I want to hear every whimper the baby makes, I can set the monitor to on, and I hear everything. At night or when we are running a space heater or humidifier in his room, I set it to the voice activated setting so I don't have to listen to the constant humming of the heater / humidifier. It only comes on if the baby cries out. We have a wireless Internet going in our house, as well as a number of cordless phones, and we have had no interference problems. I also really appreciate the fact that this monitor has a rechargeable battery. I know it is saving us money and it also keeps us from having to rush out to buy batteries if somehow they went dead and we didn't have a spare. We keep the AC/DC adapter in our bedroom so the receiver can charge at night, and it has plenty of battery life to get through a typical day. Just to be safe, we bought a second AC/DC adapter at Radio Shack that we put in our home office (the other room where we spend most of our time). Some reviewers have mentioned problems with feedback. If you have the receiver turned up fairly loud and you get too close to the transmitter then, yes, you will get some screechy feedback. But I have to imagine that's the case with any monitor. It's just how these things work. We, too, have had problems with the "out of range" alarm on this monitor going off when it shouldn't -- hence the 4 star rating instead of 5. I have noticed it going off when we are in the furthest corner of our house, which is understandable, but it also goes off from time to time at night when we are only one room away from the base unit. It seems that this happens when there's interference of some sort. It seems to happen less if I don't keep the cordless phone handset on the same nightstand. Still, enough people have complained about this that I hope Sony will address it. Overall, a very good product.
Customer Review: Super Clear Sound - Best Range in Large House Summary: 4 Stars
I tested 4 units (Sony 27 Channel; Safety 1st Quick Connection Two-Way 900 mHz (up to 1000 feet range); Fisher Price 900Mhz Long-Range (850 feet range); evenflo Whisper Connect SENSA.
I live in about 4500 sq. ft., and needed long range. The ranges these products state, I believe, are for open areas not for houses with walls. So don't pay too much attention to that. The fact is, that the farther you go from the base unit, you will lose contact with it. The three units had terrible white noise as soon as I was down the hall from the room, about 50 feet (obviously with walls in between). For mind vision purposes, I can tell you that I was trying to get past these rooms (from MASTER, to FRONT HALL, to DINING, to KITCHEN, to FAMILY ROOM, to WORK ROOM). The units (non Sony) only got me to the Dining Room without major white noise or losing signal. The sony unit got me all the way to the Work Room by placing it at a higher level.
Anyway, to make a long story short, if you hate white noise or interference, SONY IS THE ONE FOR YOU. As long as the receiver is in range with the transmitter, it is super clear and QUIET. Amazingly so.
This is the only one I could get to work with my house, being about 140 feet from the base unit. Some adjustments had to be made at times - like placing receiver up high - but the sound was clear and within range. The other brands get some good reviews, but probably at a much closer (shorter) range. I know my personal needs are not the most common, but felt that the review was necessary so that people needing long range could have an option.
UPDATE: I forgot to add that I did have to play around with the transmitter, and placed it in baby's bathroom instead of right next to the crib. This was the best solution for our out of range problem. I think people need to give placing both transmitter and receiver in different places to find the best working mode. It is so clear that even though it is not right next to the crib, it seems as though it is...
I did not find the 2.4 mHz unit from Fisher Price. This one may work. But I did not test it.
Customer Review: Great monitor, look no where else Summary: 5 Stars
Gone are the days of baby monitors that pick up tons of static and keep you up at night because of it.
This baby monitor picked up no static for me. It's SO cheap, can be plugged in, is fairly lightweight, has a belt buckle to clip on to you so you can move around, and it has great range through our two story house. Also, when you need to use the battery to walk around the house, it has great battery life and I've never had an issue with it running out of juice. At night we keep it plugged in on our dresser near our bed and during the day when baby naps, we unplug it and can walk around with it.
Other great features: it has a light indicator of 1-5 red lights. One red light means little to no sound but a crying baby will make it light up all 5 lights. That is very helpful if you need to turn the sound off for a moment but still want to see if there is noise in the nursery. It would be nice if it had a vibrating feature like some other monitors that will vibrate when there is noise in addition, but it's not necessary. Another great feature is that it has both an "on" switch where you hear whatever is in the room and a "voice activation on" switch where it will only turn on when there is significant noise (such as baby crying) to activate it. That feature works well in case, for example, you play a lullaby CD in the background and don't want to listen to that on the monitor all night.
The only con is that occasionally it will make the "out of range" beep sound in the middle of the night as some other reviews have found. But I find this can happen with some interference issues and can be alleviated by switching to another channel (there are various channels on this monitor that you can select from). This monitor did not have any issues with a cell phone that is placed right next to it every night, which is nice, as some monitors cannot handle this.
Overall, it's got great reviews on consumer reports and great reviews here. A good buy if you want something reliable, inexpensive, and don't need all the extra details like a video camera, etc.
Customer Review: The best baby monitor we have found, with two caveats... Summary: 5 Stars
First, no audio baby monitor is perfect. From time to time, they all display interference issues etc.
We love the Sony 900 MHz BabyCall for several reasons:
1) we have used multiple units together (for our two children as well as visiting kids, as many as 3 at once) with ability to find different channels for each without issue.
2) it provides very good volume control and ability to pick up sounds as soft as a breathing baby (provided it is in a good position in the room)
3) it can operate interference free PROVIDED that you do NOT have any 900 MHz devices in the vicinity (you really need to check this). Note that we had "just" 1 900 MHz phone that we used in our basement and had interference problems. These issues went away the second we disconnected that phone. Also, you may have to change the channel setting from time to time due to "rogue" interference. We suspect that a close neighboring house can even be an issue. Changing the channel settings resolved issues every single time for us.
4) The rechargeable receivers make life easy. They use a standard older cordless phone battery, and they have lasted several years for us. The wired transmitters (which you leave in the child's room) can be a drag when we are travelling (when plug points are sometimes inaccessible/hard to come by), but given that 95% of the use of these monitors is in our home the corded/cordless nature of this monitor has worked.
Downsides?
* These aren't two way, if you are looking for that.
* They are basic, volume adjustment, custom channel baby monitors, nothing more, nothing less.
* No rechargeable transmitter (as mentioned earlier)
I went through a couple of days of research and tried several other brands to convince myself that these monitors were the best compromise. Overall, we have been happy. I am also surprised because I keep expecting newer models to eclipse these. However, the baby monitors our friends with younger children have don't seem to work any better than these. Newer isn't always better, I guess.
