Customer Review: fantastic at so many ages

We received this toy when my son was born. He is now 18 months old and still loves it. It has been his favourite at several periods. At first we played it when he was having his diaper changed and he lay and watched the lights and listened to the music. Later he learnt to turn it on and loved to do that. He would turn it on for background music while he played with other toys and every time the music stopped he would stop playing and turn it on again. Now he identifies all the instruments by name and can dance to the music.
And it sounds wonderful. It is the only musical toy he has that doesn't make me cringe, even when he plays it over and over. Having 8 different tunes also helps!
Customer Review: Overpriced, Loud, and Boring

I had high hopes for this item based on other reviews, but it was a huge letdown. It plays one tune with different instruments, and it is too loud for a baby. With a music background, I really want to expose my son to beautiful, classical music. This is not the item to do that with. I will keep looking for other musical toys with more variety and sophistication.
Update: This is still my least favorite toy, mainly due to the volume. I wish I could turn it down. Thanks to a helpful comment, I did manage to play all the tunes and felt fairly silly not reading the directions beforehand. I sill stick with my original rating, though. There are just so many better toys out there.

I received this for my son when he was born. It is now my go-to gift anytime I find out a friend is having a baby. What's great about this is not only that it's fun, colorful, and interesting to children from age 0-6, but it's even fun for parents. The music is simply lovely, and it's fun to add and subtract all the instruments from the ensemble as it plays. I'm not sure I would have survived my son's colicky babyhood if not for this toy -- it was one of the few things that kept him entertained and amused me as well. My father in law, a renowned conductor in Europe, fell in love with this when he came to visit. He bought it for all his grandchildren abroad. My mother buys this for all of her grandchildren and it is a big hit. She bought it for my son when he was just a few months old. Before he learned to make it work by himself, he enjoyed looking at the flashing lights and listening to the music. then he learned to work it by himself and he would play with it for long periods of time. I think it's a great way for kids to learn cause and effect (pressing the button turns the music on and off). Now, my son is 1 1/2 years old and he still likes to play with it. He'll press the music button and dance to the music. the batteries last for a long time too. I highly recommend this toy for babies. My son got this toy as a present when he was an infant and we've been using it ever since. The music and flashing lights are interesting to babies. Now that he is almost 2, he can manipulate the sounds himself and he plays with it for long periods of time. The instruments can be subtracted out or added back in, or the whole orchestra can play together. There are many pieces to choose from. Classical music is very pleasant to listen to - especially if your child likes the toy like mine does - you'll be hearing the same songs over and over and it won't drive you crazy. The only thing we don't like about the toy is the sound is a little on the loud side with no way to turn down the volume.
