Baby Products Reviews of Mommy's Helper Safe-Lok Cabinet Door and Drawer Lock

Customer Review: Much better than the new ones with disable feature
Summary: 5 Stars

I have installed some of the original Mommy's Helper Safe-Lok and the new ones with the disable feature. Neither of them was particularly straightforward to install, but once you do one the others are a lot easier. I found both kinds of Safe-Lok to be much more effective than any of the four kinds of Safety First cabinet locks I tried (the Safety First ones broke if you pulled the cabinet too hard, as you might do if you forgot the lock was on). While the disable feature sounds great, they changed the design slightly and it's not as good as the original. The mounting bracket on the new ones are much harder to install than the original, but more importantly, the reclosing protection feature doesn't work on the new ones (it works great on the original without the disable feature). The new ones offer the option of not using the disable feature and mounting the locking arm directly onto the cabinet without the outer mounting bracket, but the design of the locking arm was changed in a few subtle ways that still render the reclosing feature ineffective. I'd highly recommend getting the original Safe-Lok without the disable feature.

Customer Review: Works well on cabinets; drawers, not so much
Summary: 3 Stars

For cabinets these work as advertised, however they won't work for any of the drawers in my home. Depending on the geometry of your drawers, you may find the same thing. I have an IKEA dresser where the drawers go in flush such that if you put the trap piece as pictured on the package, the drawer won't close. If you put it somewhere far enough in that the drawer does close, there's not enough room to put your finger in to open the safety lock! In effect, if you want a drawer to be able to close, subtract double the thickness of the front of the drawer from the length of the lock, and that's what you have left to squeeze your finger in. You'd need a baby-size finger to work it! I have another dresser with a top lip that overhangs the uppermost drawer, which also doesn't leave enough room to operate the lock.

The design would work on just about any drawer *if* it were available in different lengths (or the length was adjustable), but it isn't. Caveat Emptor.

Customer Review: Broke within days...probably good for under 12-14 month olds
Summary: 3 Stars

I installed 8 of these initially and within 2 days, my 16 month old girl had broken one. There was just enough play in the lock to allow enough momentum for her to swing it and break the lock catch completely off. My girl is in the lower 20% of her weight class (according to the pediatrician) so this was a bit of a surprise at how easily this was done once she figured it out. At that point, she thought it was a game and made it her goal to break the others off! haha! I believe this is a good product for under 12-14 month old children, but any older, you may want to invest in something more sturdy or try some sort of strap system rather than a clip-lock system. I gave this product 3-stars because it does seem like it would work with smaller/younger children, but marked it down because it does not have an age/size limit and it is definitely breakable by toddlers.

Customer Review: Safe and Effective
Summary: 5 Stars

No chemicals on the floor and no pinched fingers - it's like a dream come true. These locks are very easy to navigate for anyone who looks at them critically and they keep the little ones safe. We did have trouble installing them on the bathroom cupboard because the cabinet - the thicker part of the door overlaps with the center piece too much, so the lock wouldn't align properly unless we screwed it into the thinner part of the door, which wasn't going to work because the screw would have come through. We still installed them in the bathroom, it's just that now we have to put a little more effort into bending the hook to the side when we open and close. Overall these locks were a fantastic buy and I recommend them for anyone with curious kids.

Customer Review: Works well and prevents finger slams.
Summary: 4 Stars

We have installed these and the same item with the removable mount for the hook. They work very well and prevent the kids from closing the cabinet doors and drawers on their fingers. We especially love the convenience of the version with the removable hook for when we aren't letting the kids run free. However, one of our twin one-year-olds figured out within a few days how to slide the hook up and out of the mount for the removable hook version, so on the lowest drawers we have had to install the non-removable version. Of the hook-type safety latches we have tried, these are by far the best. [We have not tried the magnetic key type latches, and with this product we likely will not need to.]
