Description of Moby Wrap Original 100% Cotton Baby Carrier, ChocolateMoby Wrap Baby Carriers are amazingly comfortable and easy to wear! The design of the Moby Wrap uses your entire back, as well as your shoulders, to carry the weight of your baby. Unlike other carriers, which have narrow straps or go across one shoulder, the Moby Wrap is a wide piece of fabric that is wrapped over both shoulders and tied on your waist. There are no buckles, snaps or other fasteners which make wearing simple. The Moby Wrap is long enough to fit all sizes of baby wearers and babies - preemie to 35-pounds.Instructional booklet included.
Baby Products Reviews of Moby Wrap Original 100% Cotton Baby Carrier, ChocolateCustomer Review: Mixed bag Summary: 3 Stars
We got the Moby and a Baby Bjorn as hand-me-downs before our baby was born. While my husband has been using the Baby Bjorn since day one, I have strongly preferred the Moby. When I can get the tie perfectly, I like this carrier quite a bit. It distributes the baby's weight well over my back and shoulders, and I can wear it for long periods with little discomfort. However, I had to go to a local baby store to get advice on tying it (the manufacturer's instructions are not ideal, and my local store has evidently been in contact with Moby, trying to get them to change them) before I found it usable. They told me not to fold it in half the long way as the instructions say, and also to ride the label portion up higher on my chest. This helped somewhat, but I still wasn't totally happy. My baby has always tended to push off to look around, which stretches the Moby out, and after the first few weeks, she hated having her head covered by the rails, so she would fall asleep with her head dangling back at a 90 degree angle, which freaked me out. I've also found that if she wiggles at all while I put it on - which she nearly always does - or the fabric needs stretching (see below) she'll end up leaning to one side and I end up having to support her with one hand to prevent her from going too far over. I recently went online and found an alternate tie, that allows me to tie the baby in while she sits on my chest. This also allowed me to get a slightly better fit. I was also happier once she got old enough for the outward-facing tie (which I also put on while she sits on my chest), so she couldn't push off, but the rails ride up to her neck, and though they are not at all tight, I am still constantly looking in mirrors and windows to make sure that I am not hanging her. I hate the Baby Bjorn, because it hurts my back, but I find myself using it frequently for ease of use alone.
It's always hardest to use right after it comes out of the wash and needs to stretch again. I constantly have to take the baby out and re-tie it tighter, until the Moby is completely stretched out, which is annoying. I'd say there is at least a twelve inch difference in the fully stretched carrier vs. the post-wash carrier.
I have four or five friends that swore by the Moby in the newborn period, but I suspect this is highly mom/baby dependent (their children liked to sleep in the carrier, rather than push off and look around), and almost none of them were still using it after about four months.
Finally, as others have mentioned, the Moby is very warm (less of an issue in a New England winter, but over the summer this scared me), and can take a long time to put on.
Because of the low cost next to other carriers, I'd say if you have a little patience, a compliant baby and a local store that will help you get a good tie, this is a fine investment for carrying through the newborn period.
