Baby Products Reviews of Moby Wrap Original 100% Cotton Baby Carrier, BlackCustomer Review: Of limited use - not a good thing for anxious new parents. Summary: 2 Stars
Even though my son was a big, strong boy from birth, I felt very nervous about wrapping him up in the Moby before he had good neck control. It comes with a big warning in the instructions that incorrect use can result in death! Not what a sleep-deprived, postpartum mommy needs to worry about. But, the "babywearing" people had me convinced that this was a necessary thing to do in order to ensure that my baby and I would bond, so I tried and tried to get this to work.
I'd get my son into this thing, only to look down and see him with his chin on his chest, and it would freak me out so I'd take him back out and re-wrap the Moby and put him back into it to try to get a better angle/fit. Needless to say, after doing this two or three times, he would not be very happy and I'd usually be in tears.
Once he was a little bit older and had good neck control, he no longer wanted to be wrapped up in the Moby at all, and would scream his head off as soon as I tried to put him into it, no matter how calmly I moved, and no matter how drowsy he was when I attempted it. Since my baby was very mellow and good-tempered, I took this to mean he hated the Moby.
Because it is very stretchy, it has to be worn pretty tight in order to be remotely ergonomically useful for the wearer. Often, his legs would have big red marks after just a few minutes in the Moby. I even had a "professional baby wrapper" come to my house to help me figure this thing out.
Rarely, I would get the perfect wrap and get him into it properly on the first try, and then-- I must say-- he would fall asleep in it for an hour to 90 minutes-- which was like a miracle for our catnapper! However, the Moby is VERY hot and we would both be soaked in sweat at the end of his nap, even if I was topless and he was only wearing a diaper.
The only carrier he ever fell asleep in reliably was the good ol' Bjorn. He would fall asleep with his head on my chest and sleep for 40-60 minutes. I felt completely confident that the Bjorn was safe, and I could see his head and neck clearly when I looked in the mirror. He could also face outward in it once he had neck control, without sweating profusely. Of course, the Bjorn doesn't allow 100% "skin to skin" contact, so if you're bent on that, then I guess try the Moby. I hope that you will have better luck with it than we did.
I'd say we got about 6-8 good uses out of the Moby. I really wanted it to work for us, and it was extremely frustrating and disappointing that it was of such limited value.
Customer Review: I hate it, and my baby hates it. Summary: 1 Stars
On recommendation from a friend, and based on so many rave reviews, I registered for the Moby Wrap. I'm glad I got it as a gift and didn't spend money on it myself.
Complicated to figure out/not convenient to use:
I had to watch the instructional video online several times before I was able to figure it out. When I do finally get it on, it never quite looks as neat as in the photos or videos. The fabric is more bunched up and twisted by the time I'm done. As other reviewers mentioned, the long piece of fabric drags on the floor when you are trying to put it on.
Taking it off is a chore and a half. And, as others have stated, storing the wrap when not in use is not easy either. This thing is super frustrating, not convenient to use, and I have never successfully used it with my baby.
Baby's not comfortable:
When I *think* I've gotten the wrap figured out and try to put my baby in it, he hates it, and looks uncomfortable. But note that I've only tried the newborn hug hold. I didn't try the regular hug hold because he was too small, and now that he's big enough, I don't even want to bother with the hassle of putting the wrap on because I've moved on to other more convenient to use baby carriers.
One size does not fit all:
As long as the fabric is, this wrap is still more ideal for people who are of smaller build. I am 5'3", and postpartum currently about a size 12. I can get the wrap around me once, just barely (it'd be better if I could do an extra wrap around my waist, but I'm currently too big for that). Right after birth it was worse. I could only knot in the back, I couldn't even bring it around to the front even one time to knot it in the front. I don't see how an average man could wear this wrap. I'm not sure if my husband would be able to put this on-- not that he would ever have the patience to.
In terms of a wrap type carrier, I much prefer to use a Mei Tai style carrier-- it's much easier to put on, and my baby prefers it as well.
Customer Review: A lifesaver Summary: 5 Stars
I was committed to babywearing for many reasons before my son was born, but in the weeks after he arrived everything was such a blur. After a couple weeks of his crying in the afternoons I got up the nerve to try the then-complicated process of wrapping him in the Moby and TA-DAH! Instant sleeping angel in his pouch. He lived in it for the first 4 months, and it was the only place he would nap. I walked everywhere with him in it, and when he was awake, he loved being up close to people and interacting with the world. It was a must for travel--I wrapped him in the Moby and used the stroller to push our bags around. It was a bit warm in summer, and we both got a bit sweaty (it washes beautifully, with no fading), but in the cold it was heaven--I never worried about him being warm enough, just dressed him in a regular outfit and between my heat and the moby layers, he stayed toasty. If it was really cold I could wear my husband's jacket and bundle us both inside.
Set-up is daunting at first, but ince I found the wrap that worked for us (the instruction book is great, easy to follow, and there are several ways to choose from), it was a breee, and I amazed people with how quickly I wrapped it on and popped him in. I also liked that the stretchyness meant that I could take him in and out without re-wrapping it.
I had a black one, and it was, dare I say, stylish! When I wore it over a black shirt people thought it was part of my shirt/outfit. In the summer I wore it over a tank top and it looked like a shirt.
My son was a a huge infant, and I switched to an Ergo carrier when he was about 5 months old--he just got to heavy and my back would hurt. I was able to re-sell my Moby, as they are quite popular.
Customer Review: easy on the back, baby loves it, laziness my biggest deterrent Summary: 5 Stars
- My back is NOT the best, Moby wrap is very comfortable to wear as long as you spread out the wide fabric it distributes the weight.
- Washes and dry's easily!!!
-Also for me I thought the bag would be useless as in "I'll never get this back in there" turns out you can stuff it back in that bag no problem! (FYI:Still would take up 1/2 your diaper bag)
-I did nurse in the moby wrap, as long as you are against a wall on one side (great for plane if your by window) your totally covered on 1 side at a time. downside is I could only get the hang of nursing with it on my right side(right handed) and was really hard for me on the other side. but still, better than nothing.
WHEN to Wear it:
- I mostly used when I had to get things done and baby was bored, etc. needed to be held. Until front facing I could really do EVERYTHING I need to at home with a happy baby!
-On outings when I didn't need to schlep around a stroller. Plus #1 your husband or anyone can fit it so you can always switch off. Plus #2 the different holds DO-NOT require re-wrapping so you simply reposition the baby for your comfort or his/hers.
-Have used up to 1 1/2 so far so good.
Cons:
- Takes too long to put on and take off for me, i often didn't use it b/c I didn't was lazy to wrap it.
- The fabric is so long it drags on the floor as you put it on.
- So much fabric, bulky, can't put in diaper bag unless you have almost nothing else in there. Although I can't imagine a Bjorn or any other carrier fitting in a diaper bag so comparatively I don't thin this even counts against it.
Customer Review: A Good Wrap for A Little Money Summary: 4 Stars
I used my Moby starting when my daughter was about 2 months. She loves being so close to me and feeling so secure. It is great to be able to tuck her head under the fabric to keep her so tight that i can do all kinds of household chores and run after my two year old son. It is a great price compared to all the other wraps on the market. I looked into buying the Maya Wrap but i'm glad i ended up with the Moby. It looks very complicated and hard to use but after watching it being put on once, i was able to put it on myself and get my baby in it without any problems. Of course, as with everything, it gets better with time as you practice how to get it just right. I love the versatility of it. You can wear her all sorts of ways depending on her mood. I can keep her awake or put her to sleep or just hold her nice and tight if she is being fussy. I even thought about getting a second one to wear in the pool.
My only complaints would be that it is a lot of fabric to tote around. For that reason, it is not as easy to just throw in the diaper bag. But if you fold it, it is small enough to transport if you want to. It is also a little bit warm for her to be in for a long period of time if we are outside in the heat. I mostly wear it around the house. They say you can nurse in it but i've never tried. Once i get her in, she is so secure that it doesn't seem practical to move her into a nursing position. It can probably be done but i haven't attempted.
Overall, its a great wrap for the money.
