Baby Products Reviews of Mobi TykeLight Portable GloMateCustomer Review: Five Star Concept; Three Star Execution; and One Star Design Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Mobi TykeLight Portable GloMate is a great idea - a cool, portable light which only requires recharging daily. Further, its utility during power outages as a light source may prove valuable, particularly to individuals living in areas prone to that problem. We have used ours when ascending the stairs at night so we can avoid turning on the hall and stairway lights. This keeps our little one from waking because of the light which manages to seep into his room under the door, but gives off enough light so that no one stumbles on the stairs. The Mobi TykeLight is a five star concept and had everything met other criteria, would have upped my rating on this item.
I have had none of the problems experienced by some other reviewers. When the Mobi TykeLight was initially plugged in, it worked immediately while on the base. It does take at least ten hours to charge; and, it seems that initially the length of time the light glows is shorter than later, after several chargings. After ten hours of charging the first time, as directed, when taken off the base the light only worked for about five hours. The time it remains on has increased steadily but I am not sure whether it is because of repeated chargings or whether it has to do with the color of light selected. When using the red mode and after five days of charging during the day, the light finally remained on for ten hours.
When operated in the steady, blue light mode this light does an outstanding job illuminating a small bathroom. Because blue light (and green) will cause one to wake-up, if using this for a nightlight or to illuminate a hallway or bathroom, I would recommend using the red setting. Even then, the light does an excellent job lighting a small bathroom and the adjoining hallway. It is because of the default blue setting that I would rate this item three stars for concept execution.
The shape design is, quite frankly, strange - in fact, we have dubbed our Mobi TykeLight "Caspar the Creepy Ghost." While adults will not be bothered by the figure's shape, I think small children - particularly those who are very imaginative - may be frightened by this figure. In my opinion, it would have been better if the TykeLight had been shaped as an egg, a pyramid, a block, or some other geometric shape instead of giving it arms and a head. The design of the shape is worth only one star.
The Mobi TykeLight has proven to be a reliable product, but because of the blue default setting and the odd shape I did not feel it deserved five stars. Additionally, there are less expensive alternatives - for a nightlight - on the market. Thus, I gave this item four stars.
Customer Review: Great idea--but needs a dimmer switch Summary: 3 Stars
I love the idea of this nightlight. My little girl needs a bit of ambient light to find her pacifier and lovie to soothe herself back to sleep when she wakes up throughout the night. Other nightlights are ineffective because they just illuminate down low by the outlet, they don't shine high enough up to illuminate inside her crib. I was excited to find a nightlight that could safely be placed inside her crib. It's also great for consistency when traveling, not having to worry about finding an outlet for a nightlight near her crib--I like that it helps create a similar environment to what she's used to at home. However, the nightlight really needs an option to choose brightness levels. It has a dimmer mode built in, but that's only to dim it to be completely off after 15 minutes. I don't want the light off for the rest of the night--I want an option to set a lower brightness level to last all night. With no choice in brightness, the light is quite bright at the beginning of the night when we first put it in her crib--so bright we had to devise a cover for the nightlight (a little doll's shirt) to filter the light to make it a bit softer/less bright. Then, as the night wears on and it gets close to morning, the charge runs down and the light gets dimmer and dimmer. It would be SO much easier if we could set it to a less bright intensity at the beginning of the night, especially if that made the batteries last longer for more consistent light through the night. Would love this nightlight if it had choices in brightness levels (and some other shapes would be nice, too--the ghost-like look is a little weird).
UPDATE: The nightlight suddenly died after four months of nightly use (would act like it was charged/charging when you set it in the base, but would no longer turn on). It was past the 90-day warranty, but when I called Customer Service to complain, they were very nice about sending me a new replacement light for no charge once I faxed them my original receipt. And, the replacement nightlight appears to be an updated model. They have obviously improved the design: the base and charger are different, with a deeper, more defined kind of channel in the base for the nightlight to sit in so that it fits more snugly; it's easier to drop it into the base correctly. The redesign definitely helps take care of the problem of the wobbly connection that caused some reviewers to complain about it looking like it was charged when it wasn't actually making the connection to recharge. However, the redesign didn't take care of my major beef--still no new options on the brightness level. And, it's actually a little bit worse for me because the new nightlight appears to hold its brightness level all night long on one charge, without getting dimmer and dimmer through the night. This might be nice for other users, but for me, it's still brighter than I would choose for my daughter's crib.
Customer Review: Love the product, charging could use some work. (comparing to JR version too) Summary: 4 Stars
I love this product. I have a one and half year old and a two and a half year old. I first found the mobi tykelight jr at walmart. I was looking to get a second one when my kids starting fighting over the first one I bought. That's when I discovered this one.
It is slightly smaller than the JR and has several different color settings and recharges.
I was so excited about the extra features I decided to get this one instead of another JR. Well surprise, surprise the kids then fought over the new one. So I bought two more.
One of the additional ones would only turn on to red from the first time we got it out of the box and when it lost it's charge it wouldn't turn on or charge. I have to return that one but 2 out of 3 are working fine.
I would give this five stars if it wasn't for the charging problems. Like other reviews have stated, it holds a charge most of the night but definitely needs to be charged everyday. That wouldn't be so bad, but the green light indicating it's charging and the red light indicating it's charged aren't always accurate(I might have switched up what color means what I can't remember right this moment). There is no way to tell for sure if you have it on the base correctly and the slightest bump can stop it from charging.
I love the nightlight no matter what but I honestly would rather replace the batteries in the jr every 3 days instead of trying to charge the light everyday and not being sure if it is really charging or not. If it just had a way to lock on the charger so you could know it wasn't moving and would always be charging when locked on... that would be perfect.
This is great for any child who tends to pull traditional nightlights out of the wall, a room with bad outlet placing for a plug in nightlight, any young child having trouble with sleeping in the dark and likes to have something to cuddle.
Oh and the JR has a harder plastic outside covering whereas this one almost feels like a semi rubbery outside.
IMPORTANT UPDATE!!
I definitely recommend sticking with the JR version of this. I have had to get some JR nightlights only when my son lost his old one and when his sister started wanting one. This rechargeable idea isn't worth it though. All 3 of the nightlights ended up dieing withing a couple months... they just wouldn't charge anymore. Also the metal contact pin is too easy for the kids to push up inside and thus prevents charging. My husband managed to pull the pin back out only for it to die within a week. I definitely won't buy this nightlight again but I still LOVE the JR.
Customer Review: Very good night light. Great customer service. Summary: 4 Stars
We got this nightlight for my son during the transition from a crib to a toddler bed. He would pull his plug-in nightlight out of the wall, so we had to do something. Originally, I was going to leave the TykeLight on all night on the other side of his room, like a regular nightlight. I hoped the battery would last, and just charge it each morning. However, with so many parents saying they let their kids sleep with it, I gave it a try. My son LOVES this nightlight. He was 21months old when we got it, and after showing him just a few times, he had no problem turning it on and going through the colors. The first color choice is blue, with a timer that turns off in 15 minutes. The nice thing about the timer, is that the light doesn't just shut off; it slowing fades from a bright blue to a dimmer blue to off, so it's not a sudden shock from light to dark. This blue is the only option with a timer. The rest of the colors stay on until the light is turned off. You get blue, green, red or rainbow. Rainbow fades from one color to another. After having this nightlight for about a month, the green stopped working. Remembering other reviews saying what good customer service Mobi had, I sent them an email stating the date I bought the TykeLight, the date it stopped working, attached a copy of my Amazon receipt, and asked what to do. That was a Monday in the late afternoon. I got a reply about 2 hours later saying a replacement TykeLight would be sent out right away. We received the replacement on Saturday. I was not asked to send back the broken light. The TykeLight we received from the company was slightly different from the one we got from Amazon. The on/off button is now much larger and shaped sort of like a kidney bean. The charging pins on the base of the TykeLight have been replaced with two rings. The charging rings on the base have been replaced with two thick charging pins. This looks like a much better charging setup that the first TykeLight we got, and it seems very easy to make contact to charge the nightlight without getting a false positive that the light is charged when it isn't. One thing to think about; my son likes to lie in his bed and cycle through the colors. He always winds up leaving the light on the blue with the timer, but we just got lucky. I won't go into too much more detail, as other reviewers have done a great job. I just wanted to mention the positive changes to the nightlight and comment on the wonderful customer service from Mobi. If the light hadn't broken, and the original one had come with the updates, I would have given this product 5 stars.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this nightlight! So, let me start by saying that I am really picky about night lights and have gone through 4 or 5 of them in the last year. Typically when you think of night lights, you picture a small light that plugs directly into the wall, has a tiny light bulb with a cheap plastic on/off switch on the base, right? So my problem with these kinds of lights is that they just don't look or feel fire safe to me. The cheap plastic looks like it could melt and I get nervous with open access lightbulbs and switches around little hands. My son's bedroom does not have any plugs that are high off the ground, so any night light I've found has been easily within his reach.
So this is where the Mobi TykeLight has been a God-send. The base plugs into a standard wall outlet and has a cord that allows you to store the base unit high on a shelf. We plugged ours in behind a dresser so you can't even see or get to the cord. The GloMate "guy" sits in the base to charge.
Then at night you can lift the figure off its base and it glows bright enough to illuminate a dark room but not so bright that it's distracting. there is a small button on the bottom of the figure that you can press to change the color from blue, to green, to puple, etc... or you can have it automatically cycle through the colors in a rainbow effect. My son will take this figure right into bed with him (again, no cords, batteries, or chokeable items to worry about). There is a dimmer option so the light will fade in 15 minutes. Or you can set it to maintain a constant glow and then mom or dad can turn it off later.
This night light is well made and works extremely well. If the power goes out while the unit is on the charging base, the figure will automatically start glowing.
Absolutely recommend this nightlight. It was a big hit with my almost 6 year old and with mom and dad too.
