Baby Products Reviews of Miracle Blanket -Baby Swaddling Blanket -PinkCustomer Review: The best swaddler we've found Summary: 5 Stars
Our little girl was practically born sucking on her fingers. Unfortunately it didn't take long for her prenatal infatuation with her hands to turn into a postnatal love-hate (but mostly hate) relationship. Without the confinement of the uterus her poorly coordinated hands more often ended up attacking and scratching her face rather than providing self-soothing comfort. A light sleeper to begin with, this made getting a solid uninterupted nap next to impossible for the poor thing. Standard receiving blankets are too small to properly swaddle the arms straight down, and even with oversized blankets our girl can wiggle them out eventually.
All of that is a preface to our discovery of the miracle blanket - the only sure-fire way to keep those hands down! No zippers or velcro (what a mess when they come out of the dryer), the miracle blanket is an elegant swaddling solution. Flaps on the inside of the blanket go over the arms then under her back, keeping the arms down by friction. Its generously long "wing" wraps around twice, enough to keep it tight and secure through the night and limit her movement in the bassinet (this is great for peace of mind). We make the final wrap around the hip/thigh area to secure the leg pouch and then tuck the end in nice and tight.
It hasn't truly been a "miracle" for us - she's still a restless little squirmer - but it's the best swaddler we've found and the only one I can whole-heartedly recommend. If you're tired of struggling to get a tight swaddle that resists the best efforts of your little Houdini, give this one a try before "throwing in the blanket".
EDIT: I have found that you can mimic the miracle blanket by folding a normal-sized receiving blanket a couple times to create a long narrow band. Place the band horizontally over an oversized swaddling blanket (40x40in. or bigger). The band goes behind baby's back first as you lay baby down, then fold either end over each arm and under baby's back again. Then swaddle baby like you normally would, now with the arms immobilized.
Customer Review: Loses Out to Kiddopotamus Summary: 2 Stars
The Miracle Blanket has a great concept and if I had to choose between one and a regular receiving blanket, I would happily pay the extra money for the miracle blanket. However, there are some great competing brands on the market that offer cheaper, better swaddling blankets. In particular, my wife and I have been much happier with the Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe 100% Cotton Flannel, Small, Sage Gingham.
The only area the Miracle Blanket wins out is in its softer material. This is far outweighed by a less practical design and a price that's triple the current amazon price for the kiddopotamus.
The miracle blanket requires that you tuck flaps over each arm of your baby and then under their back. This may make swaddling easier the first time compared to the kiddopotamus. Yet, after a few swaddles, you'll become fast and profficient enough to deal with flailing limbs. These flaps end up just being a hassle. Also the velcro on the kiddopotamus makes getting the perfect tension quick and easy. The miracle blanket has a very long wrap that you must go around and around your baby with...and without the velcro it is much more likely to come loose. Miracle blanket makes the velcro seem like a negative, but the velcro on the kiddopotamus isn't in any place that would rub up against your babies skin.
As for fit, the kiddopotamus does a far superior job with my 7 lbs. 19.5" baby girl. The miracle blanket is "one size fits all," whereas the kiddopotamus comes in both small and large. The miracle blanket is so big that the bottom of the blanket is easily kicked off and my baby's feet shortly flail about, defeating the purpose of the swaddle. At least this allows or easier diaper changes. The kiddopotamus never comes undone, thanks to the velcro. The size also seems perfect for any baby from 18 to 24 inches and 6 to 12 lbs., but don't take my word or it. Also the flannel kiddopotamus is the most constraining I hear.
Customer Review: Worth Every Penny! Summary: 5 Stars
After knowing how much our first baby loved to be swaddled, we bought this for our second baby before she was born. What a blessing this simple blanket has been in our lives! This is the only way to keep her little arms from swinging around and waking her up at night. I generally only use the Miracle Blanket for nighttime--that way she is in a deep sleep. During the day, I let her sleep in a regular blanket swaddled around her, which she can squirm out of in a few minutes no matter how tight I wrap it. But, that way she sleeps lightly during the day and soundly at night. If I really need to get some work done during the day, the Miracle Blanket is what I turn to.
Also, we are on our fourth formula. Needless to say, we've had a very fussy baby up until now. To calm her down, we would wrap her up in the Miracle Blanket and then jiggle and listen to water running or some sort of white noise--the Happiest Baby on the Block techniques.
Yes, the blanket can remind you of a straight jacket, but it doesn't bother our baby at all! She absolutely loves it. She will fuss while we put her in it, but as soon as she's all bundled up, she gets this look and you can tell she just calms down so quickly. Beware, your in-laws may try to unwrap her and disapprove, but it's all about returning baby to the place where she knew peace and comfort.
I will now be buying these blankets for all the baby showers I go to in the future. This is by far one of the baby products I can't live without (the others being the hisense movement sensor for under her matress, the Fisher-Price glider, and the dexbaby white noise maker).
Customer Review: A Miracle! Summary: 4 Stars
We started out swaddling our girl with the Aiden and Anais muslin blankets. These worked great when she was a newborn, but as she grew and began to move around more in her sleep even our best swaddles became loose around the face and became a suffocation hazard in the crib. That's when I bought my first Miracle Blanket and couldn't have been happier with it. The long, wrap around belt tucked tightly in the back and even on the rare occasions when our little Houdini could make it come lose, it never resulted in excess material around her face. But, really, it's a moot point since the times when this came undone were few and far between. The blanket worked like a charm, washed and dried well without shrinkage and was a great fabric weight - cozy without being too heavy in our South Florida climate. My only wish is that they came in bigger sizes. My girl is now 6 months and has outgrown the leg portion of her Miracle Blanket. We did use just the arms part some nights, but have had better luck switching to a SwaddleMe brand large size swaddle now that she's over 2 feet tall.
My only complaint was the price of the Miracle Blanket - a great product and a great idea, but just too darn expensive. It seemed to me like the company was taking advantage of sleep deprived moms. I was one, so I was paid it - but I'm hesitant to recommend this because of the cost. $7-$10 bucks less would be more appropriate.
Customer Review: Expensive and difficult to use Summary: 1 Stars
To all future mommies, don't buy this product. You don't want to spend the few hours you do get to sleep trying to wrangle this thing on a newborn or young infant. Swaddling is great at night, when you're trying to get the baby to sleep on her own and you want to make it as easy as possible for you. I bought three swaddle blankets, the Kiddapotamus, the Miracle Blanket and the Halo Swaddleme Sack Micro Fleece. I have a Winter Baby, and the only one I used consistently that actually got my baby to sleep was the Halo, it's so easy to use, just zip and velcro that you can do it in the dark in your bedroom after night feedings. And the micro fleece fabric prevents him/her from wriggling out. I have an 8 week old and she is now sleeping 4-5 hour chunks at night. This helped me not disrupt her so that she could fall straight back to sleep after having her night feed. She actually only used the Swaddleme from week 3 - week 6, but it got her hooked to good sleeping habits that when she outgrew the thing, she continues to sleep well. My neighbor also used the Halo, and her 2 month old was sleeping 6 hours straight. Anyways just buy the Halo one, it's simpler and easier and won't drive you nuts.
