Baby Products Reviews of MilkBank Vacuum Storage SystemCustomer Review: Using this system to store breastmilk... Summary: 5 Stars
I love this product. I've been using it for the last month while preparing to go back to work and introducing my son to bottle. I got extra storage and feeding bottles to have 8oz, 5oz and 2.5oz bottle sizes.
STORAGE:
From personal experience, pumping air out of wine bottles helps the wine retain its flavor a few days longer than just using a cork or other type of cap. So, when I found the MilkBank Vacuum Storage system, it was a no brainer getting it to store breastmilk.
I've learned from reading about breastmilk storage that fresh breastmilk retains more nutrients than frozen. Using breastmilk storage bags, I could never completely remove all the air from the bags. Plus, I would always put the storage bags in the freezer rather than the fridge for fear of the milk turning on me. Now, I keep vacuum sealed MilkBank storage bottles in the fridge.
I'm so glad Dex came up with this product. Using the rule of 6 (6hrs/room temp, 6 days/back of fridge, 6 months/back of freezer), I keep MilkBank vacuum sealed bottles in the fridge for a max of 5-6 days. Whatever I don't use, I freeze. I label each bottle with pump date and use/freeze by date. I also write in actual freeze date when frozen.
Side Note: For labeling, I like to use Evenflo's Smart Steps Magic Labels. These labels are made with rice paper so they dissolve fairly easily when washed in hot sudsy water and some mild scrubbing.
I'm presently using 8oz feeding bottles and 4.5oz storage bottles to store milk for bottle feeding and 2.5oz storage bottles to store milk to mix into cereal. LaLeche recommends storing in 2-4oz quantities to reduce waste but my plan is to store larger quantities of milk in the 8oz bottles once my son get older and demands more.
Admittedly, it takes longer to thaw breastmilk in plastic bottles than storage bags. If I know I'm going to use a frozen bottle, I just put it in the fridge the night before to thaw. Otherwise, I deal with the bit of extra time it takes to thaw. It's an acceptable trade off for me to be able to use the vacuum sealed bottles for fresh/frozen milk.
INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS:
There's two types of caps: storage caps and feeding caps. The storage caps are used with the vacuum pump to vacuum seal the bottle. The feeding caps have little air intake holes which when used with the nipples and vent straws are supposed to reduce air swallowed by baby. Feeding caps also come with white travel lid and cap. All caps (feeding/storage) are interchangeable with all sizes and types of MilkBank bottles (feeding/storage). The vent straws are another matter as they have to be different lengths depending on bottle size, e.g., you wouldn't use 2.5oz bottle's vent straw with 8oz bottle or vice versa.
FEEDING:
Haven't had much experience with MilkBank feeding caps yet. My 5 month old son's been exclusively breastfed and getting him to take ANY bottle (Tommee Tippee, Born Free, Nuby, Adiri, Mimijumi, MilkBank) had been a problem until recently. I suspect trying to transition him to daycare at the same time didn't help. Now that he's been pulled out of daycare, he's starting to accept bottles a bit more.
I bought 8oz feeding bottles to use for both storage and feeding as he grows older. I just called Dex directly to order storage caps for the bottles. Storage caps are orderable from Dex over the phone in packs of 3.
BREASTPUMP COMPATIBILITY:
MilkBank bottles are wide neck bottles with a bottle thread similar to BornFree bottles. I am able to use the BornFree breast pump adapter to adapt the MilkBank bottle to my Medela PumpInStyle breast pump.
For what it's worth, since the BornFree and MilkBank bottle threads are similar and both are wide neck bottles, I've been able to successfully attach BornFree's cap, nipple and corresponding venting system to the MilkBank bottle. So, if you don't like MilkBank's feeding cap but you like it's storage cap and you use BornFree bottles, you could pop the BornFree cap and vent on when it's time to do a feeding.
CONCLUSION:
Even if I don't use MilkBank products for bottle feeding, I'm definitely using it for storage and heating milk. I'll then pour milk into whatever container my son will accept for bottle feeding.
