Baby Products Reviews of Medela Swing Breast Pump

Customer Review: Not great for me
Summary: 3 Stars

I did a great deal of research before purchasing a pump and decided on this one as I am a stay at home mom and felt it would be perfect for my needs of occasional pumping. As another reviewer stated the ac adapter cord comes out of the pump very easily shutting the pump off. I have also only been able to pump 1 to 2 ounces from each breast and that is pumping for 20 minutes each breast. Obviously 3 ounces in 40 minutes is not a great total. I decided to rent a hospital grade pump (Medela Lactina) at one point when I was going to have to exclusively pump for awhile. With that pump I was able to get 5 ounces in 20 minutes which let me know that more production is definitely possible with a better pump. Of course to purchase the Lactina or even rent it for a long period of time is far more expensive than buying the Swing. Now however I am wanting to purchase a better quality double pump in an effort pump more in less time (even though I'm home I have found it is not often easy to find 40 minutes to pump and only get a few ounces). I wish I had gone ahead and paid more in the beginning and gotten a better quality pump as now I have basically thrown away about $270 in buying this one and renting the Lactina for a month.

Customer Review: very nice
Summary: 5 Stars

Prior to buying this product, I purchased not one but two Evenflo Select Comfort Single Breast Pumps in the span of five months. Using them twice a day, the first motor lasted two months before it was so weak that it was worthless, and the second motor lasted one month before it just stopped working completely [I started pumping when my daughter was two months old]. And, not that this made much difference to me, they were really loud. It was difficult for me to hold a conversation with my husband two feet from me on the couch with the TV off while pumping.

That's when I spent a little more money and purchased the Medela Swing pump. I've used it twice a day for only a month, but it's worked wonderfully so far. The motor is still very strong and I can get between 2 and 4 ounces from one side in about ten minutes [I know everyone's different, but that's pretty good for me]. As far as the noise, it's a quiet hum compared to the Evenflo's jet engine.

I've had a much better experience with this pump than the Evenflo ones. It's only been a month, but I would reccomend the Swing to anyone for one or two pumping sessions a day. The price is definitely worth the time saved and the convenience.

Customer Review: So much better than my Pump-in-style
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Medela Pump-in-Style. I recently went back to work full time and have been having trouble keeping up my milk supply. I have to go travel for work soon and the idea of carrying the bulky pump and trying to use it aboard a plane made me decide to try the Swing. I wasn't expecting it to be much different in terms of pumping other than being a single pump but it turns out, that it works much more effectively for me. The PIS basically has two modes during pumping, suction on all the way or suction off so it pulls hard and quickly and feels rather 'pinchy'. It doesn't effectively stimulate let-down for me much of the time. The Swing instead has a stepped suction action. It actually makes a vibrating sound when it pumps (my husband says it sounds like a bullfrog, I think it sounds like a loud snore). The result is that the suction is much more gentle, even when it pulls just as far and it simulates a baby much more accurately and stimulates let-down more effectively for me. It takes me half the time to pump 4 ounces with the Swing than it ever did with the PIS, even though it's only a single. Add that to the portability, and this is now my primary pump. My PIS at 3 times the price is getting packed away.

Customer Review: not so great
Summary: 2 Stars

This is the only one I've used, so I have nothing to compare it to. I chose the Swing because it was a moderately priced electric pump (Target $150). My mistake was that I did not research information on pumps. My experience with this machine is that it is LOUD. For those of us that need to pump while in a public facility or at work, this is embarassing and unacceptable. Its like broadcasting to the world that you are pumping. In my opinion, this is a private matter and is no one else's concern. In addition, it is certainly loud enough to wake the baby.

It either plugs in or uses batteries. It drains the batteries within just a few pumpings. It will leave you in the middle of a pumping session- and that is not a good place to be.

I also find it a little slow. Again, I will admit that I have nothing to compare it to, and this is only my experience.

The peice with the valve is removable for cleaning. After just a few times, the peice has frozen on, and I can't get it off. This is irritating, to say the least.

On a positive note, I find it pretty efficient and versitile. I like that it will pump into anything and not just other medela products.

Customer Review: Expensive, SO 3.5 Stars
Summary: 3 Stars

My wife and I decided that we wanted to breastfeed our baby as long as possible. We attended some infant care classes, and truly learned the great value and benefits (One great benefit for Dad's is the baby's poo is not stinky and easy to change) as well as the myths associated with Breastfeeding. But, we didn't realize the importance of a Breastpump, so we researched the many brands and styles, and really couldn't make up our minds on which one to purchase. So, honestly it came down to our lactation consultant and many positive reviews for Medela products. My wife is a stay-at-home mom, so we didn't need the double pump or pump so much milk as a working mom (Kudos to all of you Working Moms). The pump is very small and practical for our use and Mom likes it (Japanese, so I'm translating) but at $125.00 we almost didn't buy the Swing and the price caused the 3.5 stars. We haven't used other breastpumps, so we can only say is that it's works and it comes with everything you need to get started. Although you'll have to buy more bags or bottles for storage. Good Luck, as we seen other brands at a lower price.
