Baby Products Reviews of Medela Swing Breast Pump

Customer Review: Not good for constant use
Summary: 2 Stars

This pump worked great at first, but it slowly began to lose its effectiveness. I used it for about 8 weeks. The first few weeks were great - I was getting a normal amount of milk out - about 2 or 3 ounces per breast. Then my supply started dwindling. I blamed stress, I drank lots of water, I took fenugreek, I pumped every two hours for a week straight. Finally, when I was only getting half an ounce per breast, I decided to go rent a medela Symphony (hospital grade pump) and my supply has increased greatly since then, with no additional pumping sessions. The Swing is weak, and I think it was stronger in the beginning, but always the highest setting was never a very strong pull. Also, I would often get milk sucked up into the tubes, like other reviewers stated. I would recommend this pump to anyone who might pump once a day or so, but no more than that. It is small and can fit in a large purse or regular diaper bag, so at least it's useful for pumping away from home, if that's not a daily thing. You will go through 4 AA batteries quickly, though. Probably a fresh set of batteries gets you 8 hours of pumping. I would consider this a motorized version of a hand pump. It's inexpensive compared to other pumps so for occasional use, it's okay. Don't buy this if you're planning on pumping a lot.

Customer Review: Compatible with Playtex airvent

I originally purchased the Avent Isis to use with DD because I was sure I would feel like a cow on the milk line if I used an electric pump, and I had read great reviews about the Isis. After the first two months though, I decided that the Isis was rather uncomfortable to use, and the massaging breast shield kept losing suction and leaking milk out the back, so I started researching pumps again.

I knew I wanted a Medela, but some of their pumps weigh in at 8 pounds, and I knew I didn't want anything that NEEDED to use the complimentary "stylish backpack". When I found the Swing, and read the reviews, I knew it was what I wanted. It is nearly as compact as hand pumps, but uses the same two stage action as the more expensive Medela pumps. It is comfortable to use, I've had no problems with leaking, it seems more efficient and in general I just really like this pump. You can use double A batteries to power it, which is great if you are traveling (Airport? Camping?) The best part though, came about five minute ago when I realized that the threads on the Swing match the threads on the skinny Airvent bottles that are the only ones we can get DD to use!! No more random bottles, and no more pumping in to one container and then pouring into another container to use!

Customer Review: how to get more milk
Summary: 4 Stars

So I never made much milk, but with this pump I was able to give her about 3-5 feedings of breast milk a day up until 4 months. I especially like the huge variety of settings and soft cups. This pump helped me to build my supply, which took a really long time. I had to pump a half hour on each breast. I liked that it was a single pump because I had to milk my breast to get more milk out. It was very gentle and even though after the 2nd week of extremely sore nipples breast feeding I thought my nipples would never stop hurting, they did as soon as I went to just using the pump. My kiddo still got the milk, her daddy got to help feed her, and everyone was happy. I however had to stay up an hour after feeding her to pump... so I was pretty sleep deprived. I'm sure ladies with more milk supply will love this pump. Especially the price. I did not feel it was "a good pump for the money" I simply felt it was a good pump period. I'd buy it again. It was especially nice for when I went out for the day and didn't want to come back home to pump. I could just go to my car put sleeping baby in her car seat and sit in the back with her and pump. And on car trips I let my husband drive and I just sat in the back and pumped. Brign a cooler with you for the milk though. :-)

Customer Review: Very unhappy with this

I bought this breast pump 3 months ago. I have already had to call for warranty replacement twice. (Both times I called they replaced the pump unit for free and overnighted it so I had it the next day.) Mine always gets milk backing up in the tubing, and they tell me that it is because this pump is not designed to be used that much. Since I'm a stay-at-home mom, I don't really use it a lot. It would be terrible if I was working. I have to stop several times while pumping to blow the tubing out so the milk doesn't get into the motor. It takes forever with this pump and I never feel like it gets all the milk out. It has battery power, but only pumps well when the batteries are brand new. Even when it is plugged in to the wall it just doesn't seem like it is sucking hard enough. My sister bought the Medela Pump in Style double pump and it is AMAZING! I wish I never would have used it because then maybe I wouldn't know how crappy the Swing is. Its a lot more expensive, but if you're having your first baby and are planning to have more, and especially if you are a working mother, I definately recommend the Pump in Style advanced. It gets twice the milk in half the time. No kidding. You might think this is a good buy, because of the price, but its not. Don't buy this pump.

Customer Review: WOW, Love this product

When I was pregnant I was still not sure what I wanted to do, Did I want to nurse, or formula feed so I bought a cheap pump at Target. After a rough delivery, and a small and sick baby my Dr. talked me into breast feeding for the benefit of us. After 3 weeks with my cheap and pathetic pump, I finally had enough. A friend of mine had raved about her Swing, and I was a bit skeptical (This is the same friend mind you who talked me into buying some stupid things for my son that I would "Need" and never touched). After reading reviews I decided to order one. I was shocked (Pleasantly this time) to use this pump for the first time and not hate the entire experience. I don't find it loud at all, despite some of the people who have reviewed this item. It is comfortable and it even fits the storage bottles I had purchased for my other pump. Its easy to use, and works fairly quickly! I recommend this to anyone and everyone! Even if for some reason it does not hold up until my next child (I plan to nurse until my son can be on cows milk) I would purchase it again. It is great and I've been able to pump after every feeding and do well.Medela Swing Breast Pump
