Baby Products Reviews of Medela Swing Breast Pump

Customer Review: If I could do it again...
Summary: 1 Stars

To the Megan of three months ago:

I know that this pump is a lot cheaper than the Pump in Style Advanced and that you're not sure whether you'll even end up breastfeeding successfully. All the other baby stuff is so expensive, plus those nursing bras, bra pads, nipple cream, bottles, cleaners, sterilizers, etc. You think you should save the money here; after all, how bad can this pump be compared to the Pump in Style Advanced?

Please, please buy the Pump in Style Advanced. You'll save yourself three months of pain and suffering. You'll be able to pump your overproducing breasts even when your baby is full. You'll be able to stockpile some milk so you can sleep even though your baby needs to eat every two hours throughout the night. You'll be able to regulate your supply when your baby decides he's not as hungry as he used to be.

You won't be able to do any of that with the Swing because the Pump in Style Advanced on its lowest setting is stronger than the Swing on its highest. And the Pump in Style Advanced can pump both breasts at the same time. The Swing's pumping time for you will be 40 minutes per breast, the Pump in Style Advanced will take you 20 for both.

The Pump in Style Advanced will save you days of pain with horrible lumps that turn into mastitis by pulling those lumps out whereas the Swing will just tug at your nipples till they turn purple, its little motor wheezing like a smoker racing up a steep hill.

Sure the Swing is more mobile, if you buy it, I promise you that in three months you'll throw it out the window in favor of the Pump In Style Advanced. And that moment will be the happiest that you share with the Swing.

Love,
Future Megan.

Customer Review: Quiet and easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking for a pump because I'm planning a long car trip which I don't want to make even longer by stopping every 2 hours to feed. Other than that I only plan to use it occasionally -- enough to keep my child taking a bottle. I have the Medela Manual Electric which the hospital gave to me. I used once it once and hated it. It was slow and actually hurt because the required pump action pushes against the breast. This experience made me leary to get the manual Medela Harmony (or similar). I also thought I'd feel weird using a manual pump while fairly visible in a car.

I'm trilled with the Swing.
* It's cute and the parts are small enough to carry large handbag. The pump itself is about the size of a jumbo bagel. The breastsheild and tubing don't take up much more room. If you choose to plug it in then the cord with its wall wort are almost a large as the pump itself.

* It's extremely easy to use as the use of the 4 buttons is intuitive.

* It's quiet. My baby is a noisy eater and she's louder than the pump.

* I guess the drawback is only one breast can be pumped at a time. I found I can get 70ml in about 15 minutes, ie about the same speed as my child. However, it only takes one hand to hold the bottle/breastshield so I can use the computer at the same time. (If I pumped at a table of the right height I might be able to prop up the bottle/breastshield and have 2 hands free.)

This pump is awesome for an occasional user. I'll speculate that it would be good for someone who doesn't drive a car to work and doesn't want to lug a Pump In Style, and yet has the flexibility to allow pumping to take a little longer.

Customer Review: Breastfeeding our second child...
Summary: 5 Stars

With my first child, i used the Medela Harmony manual breast pump, so that is the previous pumping experience I have to compare with. I insisted on getting an electric pump with our second child and do not regret my decision. The Harmony is a great pump for the price and I know of women who used it exclusively and went back to work. However, for me, I pumped less and less as I began to dread the pumping process with a manual pump. Partly because I was lazy, and partly because I have mild arthritis in my hands. So, since I am a stay-at-home-mom, I decided buying a double pump was a bit over-kill. So, the Medela Swing seemed like my best option. I LOVE IT! It works so effortlessly. I can easily pump one side while baby is feeding on the other side. (I'm sure it was quite entertaining for my husband watching me try to do that a few years ago with our first baby and the manual pump!) I will suggest that you buy extra breast shields because they do seem to warp, even when you don't put them in the dishwasher, but they aren't that expensive. I can't imagine buying a stronger pump, as I haven't even put the Swing pump on its highest setting and seem to get out plenty of milk in a small amount of time. I think a stronger pump may hurt...??? I like the travel-friendly size of the Swing pump, too. We have lots of family out of state, and with two little ones, it is easier to fly. The less you pack on a flight, the better. You can put batteries in it, or plug it in. Overall, I would recommend this pump to any stay-at-home-mom tired of wearing her hands out on a manual pump. For the working mom (even part-time), I would suggest you get, the Pump In Style Advance, as it would make your life easier...

Customer Review: Pumping can actually be comfortable
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a working mom of 2 and have -- until yesterday -- only used Medela's Pump in Style. The Pump in Style is a fine pump, and I appreciate its double capability, but it's heavy! I commute by bus (or walking), but I often work from home, and it was too much to keep lugging the Pump In Style with me JUST IN CASE I ended up needing it. So, I decided to invest in the Medela Swing as my "backup" pump to keep at home or use on the road. I love it! Pumping is not fun, and I've always found it to be uncomfortable (as in minimally painful). But I was very pleasantly surprised to find that pumping with the Swing was actually comfortable while being as efficient as the Pump In Style. It could be the Softfit breastshield (I have yet to try it with my other pump). The pump is quiet (my husband commented that he found the Swing's low tones and rhythm much more soothing than the louder Pump In Style) and very easy to control. In any event, I would highly recommend this pump to any mother who does not need double pumping capability. The Swing's portability and comfort are worth the investment.

UPDATE (Feb. 8, 2008) -- I tried the SoftFit shields with the Pump In Style and can conclusively say that there is something about the Swing pump's motor or rhythm that is definitely more comfortable than the Pump In Style. I have been using the Swing for a few weeks now and am still consistently pleased with the purchase. I close my nursing bra around the breast shield while pumping, so I still have use of both of my hands. Pumping both sides separately does take a bit more time, but I'm not complaining. I love the Swing!

Customer Review: Great inexpensive pump
Summary: 5 Stars

My son was born over 6 weeks early. Because I am also a working mom, we didn't work too hard on breast feeding since he would need to take a bottle when I returned to work. So, I had the hospital rental for two months and purchased the Swing after that. I was leery of spending a ton of money for an item that I was unsure how long I would use it for. In hindsight, I probably would have spent the extra money for the Pump-In-Style...but I am very pleased with the Swing. I used the Swing to pump exclusively for the following three months. It worked fantastic. I did have milk back up the tube once or twice. I had to replace the valves when the suction wasn't quite right also. But, I consider that level of maintenance acceptable. I had no problems with milk supply, and although I only pumped for 5 months, my son was exclusively on breast milk (well, with some formula supplementing it for added calories) for 6 months. I probably got about 4 ounces in 20 minutes, which was comparable to my hospital pump. I would say that a negative would be that it is only a single pump...but at times, that was a plus since I could have one hand free to get some work done! I would say that the volume is average. If one is on a budget, I would certainly recommend this pump. My husband and I are planning for number two, and I am considering purchasing a double pump just for the time factor, but I read an excellent idea on here, a second Swing! I may go that route, I am pleased enough to purchase it again. For the cost-benefit ratio, this pump is a winner!
