Customer Review: Medela did NOT provide for free

I gave this 5-stars because this merchant is offering a good deal on this replacement tubing. This is a follow-up to all of the reviews about free replacement tubing from Medela. I have called Medela on 3 separate occasions over the past two weeks (Nov. 1-15, 2010), pressed 0 for the operator, was re-directed to customer service all 3 times with a hold/wait time of 25-40 minutes each time. The first two times I had to hang-up because my children were restless in the background. I gave up and emailed Medela customer service with my model number and pump description (Pump in Style Advanced Backpack manufactured and purchased in December 2005.) I received a generic email response directing me to order the replacement parts from their website, however this particular replacement part cannot be ordered from their website which is why I had contacted customer service in the first place! So today, I called one last time and waited on hold for 25 minutes. I spoke with a nice customer service representative, I made no assumptions about the tubing being free and was told they cost $4.81 per tube plus shipping and handling. The total for a set of 2 pre-2005 replacement tubes is $16.60 with STANDARD UPS ground shipping! Crazy! The shipping costs as much as the tubing! I then asked when they stopped providing one free set of replacement tubing and was told that they only provide free replacement parts for pumps under warranty (i.e. 90 days from purchase). I am NOT pleased with Medela's customer service!

The replacement tubings from Medela are NOT free; and the customer service is NOT always that good.

First of all, maybe it's because I'm a Dad. Maybe when Moms call, they will treat you differently. Who knows.

So, I called the 1-800-435-8316 number and got to customer service. After reading all the wonderful reviews here, I thought all was going to be just a breeze and would get our replacement tubings quickly and simply. But oh no, that was not the case. The CS rep told me immediately in "plain English" -- NOT FREE TUBING! It's $10 per pair plus shipping and handling. When I mentioned the reviews here on Amazon, she just repeated the "pricing" to me again. What Amazon!! Then I nicely asked to speak to a supervisor. And she said: NO ONE IS AVAILABLE!!

So I hang up, decided to call the number again. This time, I directly asked the operator to get me a CS supervisor. Interestingly, not only were there supervisors available, she could even connect me to the supervisor direct responsible for the previous rep I just spoke to!! So there I was talking to this supervisor. Sorry, actual names are left out here for good reasons. This supervisor, however, also told me that the tubings are NOT FREE. It's only a courtesy they SOMETIMES provide to some customers. $10/pair plus shipping and handling please!!! mmmm.....

In the end, she did offer to send us a pair of free replacements. I guess I have no complaints with that.

This tubing does not work with my advanced pump in style model as stated in the product description. After my negative review I was contacted by Rebecca at set 4 baby. This was their response:

"This is item # 8007212 Medela tubing for advanced breastpumps including the new models. We have yet to have a complain that this doesnt' work with the advanced breastpumps. Re the packaging - It clearly states on the product page that this item comes from medela in bulk packaging and we repackage the item for individual sale.

If you had complains you couldve contacted our company we wouldve been glad you help you- maybe you don't know how this tubing works."

From the amazon site, I did read previous review stating that this tubing did not work for them as well as other complaints from other customers. I do know how to use the appropriate tubing as I have successfully used it for the past 8 months. The set 4 baby tubing has the adapter piece on one end of the tubing and does not come with the adapter piece on the other end.

I just read some of the other reviews that Medela customer service will give them to you for free!! Wow.... No more buying them! I am going to tell you some tips about this tubing though...Make sure you use the correct tubing for your pumps b/c they will not work correctly if you use other Medela tubes made for other pumps. It makes sense but I just thought it wouldn't matter. Well it kept stopping up my milk ducts so dont do it!

Also, for people who have not used these breastpumps yet...These tubings are VERY cheaply made..Reminds me on how some cars spark plugs are meant to crap out on you after 30,000 miles.... These tubes do not seal well. The plastic applicator that goes into the tube on one end always seems to come loose on me after about 11 times using it and once it comes out just throw it away b/c you dont get good enough suction. If you're anything like me you'll end up getting stopped milk ducts all the time! Lots of things I was never told...But I know everyone's boobs are different.

I called Medela customer service today (3/7/2011) 1-800-435-8316, option 1 for customer service. The wait was a little long, 20 minutes of repeatedly hearing "thank you for waiting" every minute or so. When I got a hold of someone she was very pleasant. I simply stated I needed replacement tubing for my pump. She asked me to describe what kind of tubing, if it was hard plastic on one or two ends. I told her one end. She then asked when I purchased my pump. This is a hand-me-down from my friend who barely pumped and since I did not know the purchase date I replied "a few years ago" (I've had this pump over 2 years). I went on to explain I wasn't quite sure what the model was and she said that it was fine. She then said as a courtesy they will send one replacement. I know for a fact there have been no replacement parts ordered for this pump, so maybe they keep track by name/address? She asked me my name and mailing address and that was that. She said it should arrive in 1 - 2 business days. Awesome!
