Baby Products Reviews of Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump with Shoulder Bag

Customer Review: A bit expensive, but a quality product
Summary: 4 Stars

I started with a Medela Symphony rental from the hospital when our son was in the NICU. I bought this not long afterward and toted it what felt like everywhere for the first 6 months. The pump itself works well, though I have no point of comparison other than the Symphony, and definitely not with a less expensive brand. Pumps are not exactly products you can test out and return:)

The bag, while discreet, isn't terribly fashionable. For the price, I would have loved a hands-free attachment. I definitely think that for what you are doing, you want something that will quickly and effectively do the job. The Pump In Style does just that (though I never felt remotely stylish while using it).

One suggestion would be to be able to zip out the pump part (perhaps in a cosmetic bag size)for travel. I ended up leaving this at home on a vacation because it was just too much gear to take along for a weekend trip along with all of the bottles, etc. not to mention the baby himself.

I am hopeful that is is a durable product so I can justify the purchase of it spread across a few kids. But, in terms of pumps, I hear it is the best and I have no major complaints.

Customer Review: Expensive but necessary
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a stay at home mom so 99% of the time I breastfeed but I needed a pump to go back to work for a week and for the occasional night or weekend away. I tried to get by with the manual pump and after several tries I just could not get it to work. My hand would get tired and the suction was just not strong enough to get much out. I was AMAZED when I started using this. It did not hurt at all - I use the suction at a little over halfway. It is a but loud but they all are.

I have very small breasts (even while breastfeeding I'm still an A) and the shields that came with the pump work fine for me. Smaller ones might work better but I don't have any problems with these.

The bag is nothing special. I wish it had a little more space in it for some personal belongings so that I didn't have to bring a purse in addition to this bag. It didn't even have room for a wallet, cell phone and keys.

The suction/speed is only one knob that controls both. It would be nice to have them separate if you want stronger stronger suction and slower speed.

Overall this is a great pump. I don't know if it's worth the price but in my opinion it's a necessity.

Customer Review: life saver!

I have 3 children and had tried about 4 different types of pumps. This one is by far the best I've ever used. Not only am I more successful in actually getting more milk out in a descent time, I'm not sore all day dreading the next time i have to pump. With my 1st 2 kids I ended up switching to formula b/c it would take so long to get out enough for a bottle & it's not like you have all this down time to be hooked up to a machine when you have a baby in the house! I almost wasn't even going to try with my 3rd b/c I knew it would be alot of pain and suffering to just switch to formula but I gave it a shot and got the best pump I could find. Its been over 4 months with no troubles and going strong. The only thing that I would say needs improvement arethe valve membranes. I've had to replace them twice so far. Its not like its exspensive but it would be nice if they lasted a little longer. After the first ones got a tear in them where it connects to the vavle, I was extra careful to not be rough on the next ones. They lasted a little longer but still didn't seem like it was long enough. But I'll gladly deal with that minor irritation for such great benefits.

Customer Review: Awesome pump!

I debated between buying this pump and the lansinoh pump. Since this pump consistently got good reviews, I purchased this one instead of taking any chances with the lansinoh pump. I planned to nurse, but instead, ended up pumping since the day we returned from the hospital. It's been over four months now and I use this pump every day, at least five times a day. I have an excellent milk supply (I can get 4-5 ounces from each side after only 3 hours between pump sessions). I find it to be extremely portable (although it is a little heavy when you are carrying a diaper bag, bottle bag and baby carrier with you). It has been worth every penny we spent on it. My recommendation to mothers who are considering buying a pump: if you are tempted to purchase a less expensive, just remember you are dropping $150-$200 on it. If it does not work for you, you can't return it and get your money back. You'll have to buy another and then you end up paying more. Buy a quality product the first time around, that way you don't have to spend the money twice. You won't have any regrets. Do shop around though. They may have it cheaper elsewhere.

Customer Review: Not for me...
Summary: 3 Stars

I like many other first time moms bought this pump by reading the reviews. I thought for sure that this pump would have been the best of the best. Based on Medela website it works wonders for building up milk supply and is the closest pump to hospital grade. My husband and I thought that buying this pump would save us money in the long run, and we would be able to use it for future use. After buying this pump I used it around the clock non-stop for 4 weeks. It did nothing for my milk supply. I was able to express more milk by hand than I was with the pump. At first it seemed as though the suction was bad. After looking at the faceplate we noticed it had a crack. I called Medela and they sent a new one right away. After replacing the faceplate, the suction was still very little. Once I decided to send to pump back I called Medela and was told that once the faceplate is removed, you have to "reset" the pump. With the operator on the phone I did as she said, and still very little suction. I suggust that anyone who is looking into buying this pump have a great milk supply before hand. Buyers beware.
