Baby Products Reviews of Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump

Customer Review: Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!
Summary: 4 Stars

When shopping for a breastpump 7months ago, I passed on this pump and opted for the Ameda Purely Yours, which worked fine up until last night when the motor broke. Since I pump exclusively and plan to breastfeed exclusiveely until my son is 1yr., needless to say, I needed a new pump immediately. I was looking to replace my Ameda but local retailers don't carry that brand. I ran out to BRU and picked up the Medela PIS. I LOVED this pumped from the MOMENT I began using it!!!!! Like the Ameda, I am able to pumped both breasts, but with the Medela I get my 8-10oz out in 1/2 the time. Now it only takes me 5-10mins MAX and I'm done. This is perfect since I pump 3 times at work. I love the sleek backpack. The only reason why I'm not giving it 5stars is because the entire assembly is much heavier that my old Ameda, but that's okay with me. Everything else about the pump is perfect. I don't mind the 2 bottle top caps...nothing leaks through them..so who cares if they're not regular caps. I'll definitely recommend this pump to anyone who has to pump more than 2x per day. I only wish I had gotten it sooner instead of the Ameda. Now that we're planning on #2, I feel confident that this pump will last through that 1yr of breastfeeding that baby too.

Customer Review: Part of my regular routine, works great.

As a first-time mother I was nervous about using such a bulky, industrial-looking product, and in truth pumping is not an elegant activity, any way you look at it. But the pump has helped me store up loads of breast milk for a business trip I was planning (300 oz for a 5 day trip), and I rely on it every day since my baby is in day care. The cups are stiff and it may seem uncomfortable, but I would think this prevents them from changing shape after steam cleaning in the microwave many times.

I bought this pump so I can use the batteries when I'm not at home, but it ends up the whole bag is too cumbersome to lug around, so I ended up getting the manual pump for when I pump in public restrooms. This works equally well in terms of the amount I can pump, but for time-efficiency this product does the job really well.

Although I've been concerned about mold growing in the device, from water working its way into it from the tubing; I make sure to let it "dry pump" after I'm done, as the instructions say, but not sure if that alone is going to keep it clean. I'm too scared of taking the parts apart to check for mold. It would be helpful if Medela issued instructions for that, instead of the warning the user not to take it apart.

I bought this pump around 4 months ago, as I returned to work. It has its strengths: it is quiet, easily portable, and easy to use. However, mothers should think hard about their plans before deciding to purchase a personal-use pump rather than rent a hospital-grade model. After 5 months, the motor on my pump has deteriorated a lot, and more importantly, I have had a serious drop in my milk supply. Even in the beginning, I rarely got more than 4 oz in a session, and now, I can spend 30 minutes or more just getting 2-3 oz. I have had to start supplementing my baby with formula even when I am home all day because of decreasing supply.

When I spoke with my doctor, she told me this was fairly common, and that many women have to switch pumps to a hospital-grade pump after 6-9 months (3-6 months after returning to work). The Medela advanced is very good for a personal use pump, but I am out several hundred dollars for 4 months of breastpump use, when I could have rented a hospital-grade machine for that period for substantially less.

Basically, be aware of what you are buying, and be aware that factors outside of your control may influence this. Keep product lifespan in mind when choosing to buy rather than rent.

Customer Review: Extremely Pleased With This Product!

I am a blessed mom of 3 beautiful (all breastfed) children! I did a lot of research and used my past experience before purchasing this pump.
I couldn't wait to get this as I hoped it would be great --- I was right! I unpacked it, viewed the booklet, sterilized everything, pumped with it, cleaned everything with the Medela steam bags (get some of these), and then I gave my baby boy his first bottle all in less than an hour (and I did have several interruptions). I guess what I want to say is ...it is very easy to use and I was very pleased with its performance! I know it will be great when I start back to work in a few weeks!
**Here is a hint for first timers going from breast to bottle and back - I highly recommend the Adiri BreastBottle to promote transition from Breast to Bottle. As I prepared to head back to work, I had tried everything until I received this in the mail the same day as my Medela Pump. My little one wouldn't take any other bottle - this resembles the breast and is so comforting for babies. My little one made all the same luvvy sounds he makes when he breastfeeds. :) This along with the Medela Pump In Style Advanced is a dream for a back to work mom!

Customer Review: Best $$$ Spent so far!

After delivering my son by a very complicated c-section, I found that during the illness that followed, I was too weak to even hold him. Rented a hospital pump for the first month, then bought this one. This pump is MORE efficient than the hospital one! It's reasonably quiet, easy to use, and absolutely sufficient to maintain my milk supply. My son got used to the bottle while I was sick, and now will not nurse. For 4 months now, I have been able to express MORE than enough to feed breastmilk only from the bottle. I found the 9v power supply that came with the pump did not provide enough power though, and bought a 12v. (the pump is designed for 12v max) This REALLY increased the speed and efficiency of the pump. Also got a 12 v (6amp) power supply from Canadian Tire. Now I can pump without a plug, and don't need to run through the AA batteries. The power supply is good for up to 20 hrs before it needs recharging. Great for up to 5 days camping!
I'm planning on at least one more baby, and feel this pump has been a GREAT investment. If you're pregnant, don't rent, just BUY this one. You'll save money in the long run, and you'll OWN it!
