Baby Products Reviews of Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump

Customer Review: My best purchase of year 2006!!! **READ MY REVIEW**
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used Medela's Pump In Style Advance for 4 months now after having my first baby. This pump is the best in its class and it is the best thing I bought in 2006.

Why I gave this item 5-star ratings:-

1) It helped me to establish a steady milkflow from the 2nd week of breastfeeding. I am a working mom and had only 8 weeks off from delivery till I have to get back to work again. So it was important for me to rely on a good breast-pump to keep the supply going.

2) This pump is comfortable to use and I can regulate the speed which is suitable for me. The Medela parts are easy to set up for usage and also easy to wash & sterilise.

3) It never breakdown ever! For 4 months now, and I'm pumping 4 - 5 times a day. I bring this unit to the office and also whenever I am travelling. It is very mobile, although a little heavy to carry.

4) It has a battery pack which is handy whenever I am in a place without power-supply.

5) I bought this online in Amazon for USD$ 319. But in Malaysia, this unit would have cost MYR1800 (USD$ 500).

Just a note for non-US users (like myself), you need to get an adapter which is compatible with this pump. This can be easily obtained from any electrical shops.

This is a good buy, if you're looking for a pump, then you have found it!

Customer Review: Manual pump...ZERO! Medela...HERO!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was an extremely lucky first-time-mom who experienced very little trouble breastfeeding. My son latched on right away, fed well, and I had very little breast/nipple soreness and no cracking. My biggest problem came when I tried to introduce a bottle. He downright refused for several months, then reluctantly took the Playtex Natural Nurser Vent-Air.

When he finally took a bottle, my new problem became being able to pump enough milk to keep up with his demand. The Medela Advanced was the second pump I tried and was ridiculously superior to the manual pump I had first chosen. With the manual, I couldn't get it to latch on and express any milk...AT ALL! I was so frustrated. My husband encouraged me to order the Medela Advanced, and it was the best breastfeeding decision I ever made.

The 'let down' mode at the beginning of the cycle is really effective at starting the milk flow and the adjustable suction control lets you proceed at your own pace. I couldn't be happier.

At 12 months, my son no longer nurses, but we are expecting another son the first week of March '06 and I will be using the Medela pump again.

One final note about price. This exact pump and a backpack style of the same pump is a full $100.00 cheaper (and no shipping charge) at hackleyhmedotcom. Definitely worth checking out.

Best of luck! :o)

Customer Review: Best Pump on the market!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I began using this pump right after my son was born. He would not latch on, and was not giving up. We used the Medela pump and it gave me enough milk to feed him using a syringe and tubing. I didn't want him to have a bottle this early in the game since they can have nipple confusion. I used the pump and trying to let him get use to nursing for about the first week. He would nurse then I would pump every three hours. Finally when he began nurse really well I stopped pumping as much. I was also worried about how much milk he was receive. But as a nurse I should have remembered as long as he is having 10-12 wet diapers a day, he is doing great. This pump was also helpful when I went back to work one day a week. I would pump every four hours and it worked wonderfully. I could pump 20-24 ounces in a 8 hour shift. If you double pump it works better since when you begin to have your "let down" you don't have to stop the one breast from leaking. You just let them both go. Just don't forget when you are with your baby nurse as much as possible. Even if you feel like you just a nursing machine. It will keep you supply up and keep your baby happy and healthy. My son is 14 month old and weighs 28.4 lbs, all good fat, not the overfeed formula baby kind. The formula industry can never change the scientific proof Breast is best!! All vitamins are included :)

Customer Review: Worthless! Waste of Money and Major Disappointment!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this breast pump after reading all of the great reviews and comparing it to others in anticipation for returning to work after 12 weeks of maternity leave. After 4 weeks of breastfeeding my son and occasionally pumping with an AVENT hand pump, I tried this out for the first time and was completely infuriated with the poor quality and performance. First, it is impossible to adjust the suction when you are holding both containers to your breast. I do not have a 3rd hand to do this and the knob is too small to adjust with and elbow or other appendage. The suction is so poor that I only got a trickle of milk out of each breast, even with it turned up to the maximum level! After 15 minutes of pumping I had about a half ounce in each container and ended up finishing with my hand pump in a total of 5 minutes. With the hand pump I get much higher suction and a constant stream of milk filling the container. I personally do not get hour long breaks at work every 3 hours to use this worthless pump and really expected better from this company. I do not know if I got a defective pump but intend to contact Medela in regards to getting a refund since it is impossible to return it for the almost $.. it cost me! I would NOT Recommend this to my worst enemy and think it is the biggest waste of money on the history of Earth that I am now stuck with.

Customer Review: Terrific pump, especially for larger-breasted women
Summary: 4 Stars

I love my Pump in Style Advanced. It works quickly and more quietly than other double electric pumps I've tried. I am able to finish double pumping in under 15 minutes, and it's a breeze to set up and take apart (great since I use it at both home and work.) Double pumping was a little bit tricky at first, but with practice I got faster. I recommend practicing double pumping at home first before trying it at work; the first time I tried it was a little messy. Make sure those collection bottles stay upright! For larger-breasted women, you can also purchase a set of larger breastshields to get a better fit. Most pumps don't have this option. Replacement parts are also readily available online (do a web search) or in lactation centers (I was able to find one locally) in case you break or lose a piece, or just want to have an extra set handy. I think this is a great pump. I would have given it *****FIVE***** stars, but for the money I paid, I wish it had at least come with the nipple assemblies to use with the collection bottles. (You can buy those as part of the Medela feeding & storage set.) I'm sure lots of larger women would also appreciate the proper size breastshields for the Personal Fit system. I paid about $5 extra per shield at a local store to get the right fit. Overall, it is a terrific pump for everyday use.
