Baby Products Reviews of Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast PumpCustomer Review: excellent customer service from Medela Summary: 5 Stars
When it works - it works great - even better than the hospital grade rental pumps (I used the Medela Classic which is pretty good) which I used for the first four months of my baby's life. The major problem with this pump is that it occasionally loses suction power (I just recently figured out that it was either a loose-fitting faceplate - which Medela replaced immediately for me - or a clogged breast shield/connector that had nothing to do with the pump and was fixed by steam cleaning/sterilizing them in the Medela microwave steam bags) and is a major pain in the behind to get working properly. After four months of using this pump it has finally bit the dust and no longer works at all. I called Medela - the manufacturer - the very next morning and they responded so wonderfully - they sent me out a brand new pump in the box and shipped it overnight so I had it the next day. All I needed was a working motor but they just replaced the whole thing. Five minutes on the phone with a pleasant service rep. Can't beat that for customer service! It's VERY frustrating to have the pump stop working suddenly when this is the only means I have to feed my baby but (she is not eating solids yet) I can't say enough about how suberb the customer service was - they must receive many frantic calls from mothers who can only give their babies pumped breastmilk and have just had their pumps stop working for some reason. Kudos to Medela. My new pump works great and baby and I are once again happy campers.
Customer Review: An Absolute Necessity!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Of everything I registered for, this was the single most critical/useful item of them all. I was SO ENGORGED when they released me from the hospital after my son was born that all I could do was cry and leak milk. Thankfully, my Medela breast pump was waiting for me when I got home. I had tried a hand pump, which was useless and very discouraging. However, I had my Pump In Style up and running in no time, and I felt better immediately!! Not only did my breasts return to a normal size and texture, but my son was finally able to latch on and nurse, and boy was he HUNGRY! In the months that followed, I was able to return to work and continue to pump 2-3 times a day -- my son NEVER needed formula EVER. My best advice to you is -- buy this item BEFORE you give birth. People who tell you you won't need it until you return to work have obviously never dealt with engorgement issues. I have also heard of people successfully using a breast pump to help their milk "come in" if it is taking a long time and your baby is really fussy/hungry. Plus, pumping and storing allows dad to be able to feed the baby too, which is great for bonding for them and great for you when you just need to SLEEP (or read, or shop, or take a HOT BATH!). I am a HUGE FAN of this product, which was never painful, was easy to use and clean, extrememly reliable and transportabe and allowed me to be able to provide my baby with the very best food even when I was not around to nurse him. YOU NEED THIS -- TRUST ME!!!
Customer Review: Excellent Value, Worth the Money! Summary: 5 Stars
With my first child, I used a Medela single electric and a hand-pump for a weekly evening at school and occasional nights out. I breastfed exclusively, and since I was mostly home with her, I never needed anything more.
Unfortunately, I can no longer afford to be a full-time mom for my second child. As a family on a tight budget, I agonized over the decision to go for this pump. I am SO glad I did! The Medela Advanced Pump-In-Style is worth EVERY penny I spent!
With my second child, before I even returned to work, I experienced low milk-supply. I used this pump for fifteen minutes after each feeding to help me with my low milk-supply, and it worked a miracle. Now that I am back at work, I get a full bottle for my baby in just ten minutes. It mimics her pattern of suckling, until I have let-down, and I think it cuts down my pumping time.
My baby is allergic to cow milk proteins even in MY breastmilk, so I've had to completely cut out dairy from my diet! As a result, I cannot use regular formula even for an occasional supplement. The formula she can use is $20 per can! I think of my breastpump as actually SAVING me money... after all, buying this pump for $320 was much cheaper than spending $20 every five days for the first year of her life (a yearly total of $1460!).
If you must work, even part-time, I recommend the Medela Advanced Pump-In-Style. You will be making the absolute best choice for your baby in the long run.
Customer Review: A Good Pump, But Defect Issues Summary: 3 Stars
I have a 35 week old preemie baby, and breastfeeding for me was the only way to go to establish and bild up his immunity. However, he was in the NICU for a week, and I needed to pump to get milk to him - I could not be there around the clock breastfeeding. Now, that he is home, I am exclusively pumping and feeding him expressed breast milk.
In the hospital, I tried their hospital grade pump, but it did not compare to this pump's efficiency. The PISA works well - when it works. There is known faceplate issues with the Advance model - something Medela is well aware of - but the batches of defective pumps are still being sold on the market and in BRU stores. I purchased my pump on October 11, 2004, with a manufacture date (it can be found on the pump itself if you remove it from the bag) of 8/2004. And within 1 day the faceplate continually detaches from the unit - causing loss of suction and a disrupted pumping session. This happens at speeds above medium on the dial - if I use the pump on a low-medium speed the faceplate will stay on.
When the pump does work - I produce more milk than my baby needs - with a 12 day old baby I already have a freezer full of stored milk - thanks to the PISA. I just wish that Medela would have recalled their bad bacthes rather than keeping them on the market. For more reviews about the faceplate issues - babycenter.com has tons of reviews about this same issue.
Customer Review: Worth it! Summary: 5 Stars
This pump is well worth the money. As a working mom, I started using this pump during my maternity leave and found it really simple to use and efficient. Now that I have to pump 3-4x a day at work, I appreciate that it is also fast so that I am not wasting a lot of time during the day.
I would also recommend it for stay at home moms who would like to have the freedom to take bottles with them out in public rather than breastfeeding directly. I can't imagine taking 20-30+ minutes out of my precious time at home to pump with a weaker or manual pump when there is so much else that stay at home moms have to get done as well as taking care of baby. Save yourselves the aggravation and get your pumping done in 5-15 min instead, leaving you more time to spend with baby.
As far as the features are concerned, I love the adjustability. As I got used to the suction controls I was able to adjust it to my comfort level. I have not had to buy any additional accessories yet as this comes with quite a few additional bottles to pump into (I store the milk in different containers so I won't need more of the Medela ones). I am considering getting two more breastshields as I find myself washing these all the time. Those are quite inexpensive though.
Overall I am completely satisfied with this product and will recommend it to all of my girlfriends as they start their families.
