Baby Products Reviews of Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump

Customer Review: Still running strong with child #2
Summary: 5 Stars

I received the pump in style as a shower gift for my first child over 3 years ago (2003). Due to medical problems early on I had to exclusivly pump for child #1. The pump worked great. I used it several times a day and it was very effective and comfortable. I used it for about 3 months straight after she was born. I stopped using it not because it wore out, but because pumping several times a day for months was so much work that I couldn't keep doing it. My determination ran out before the pump's did! After that I packed it up and planned on using it again if I had another child.

Child #2 was born early December 2007 and I was very pleased to find that my Medela pump was still in excellent working order. Child #2 was a professional breastfeeder from day 1 so I only used the pump when trying to boost my supply or to relieve pressure from engorgment when the baby wasn't hungry. I'd say I used it a few times a week for the first 2 months. After 2 months I had to go back to work and my Pump in Style came with me. I've been working for a few weeks now and I use the pump twice a day. It works as good today as it did 3 years ago. The quality has not gone down one bit. I plan on feeding child #2 exclusivly breastmilk as long as possible and I'm confident that my breastpump will allow me to do so.

If you plan on going back to work and pumping, or if you plan on having multiple children then this is a great pump for the job. It LASTS. Its expensive, but better to spend the money upfront, get a pump that works great, is effective, comfortable, and will last you through the years than to throw money away on a cheaper model that you'll end up replacing.

The pump is so great that I'm willing to bet that it'll last right through child #2 and if we decided to have another child, it will be ready to go again in a few more years.

Customer Review: Tried & true pump
Summary: 5 Stars

I am lucky enough to own at least 3 breastpumps, and this one appears to be my favorite! I have used: Bailey Nurture III, Playtex Embrace, PIS Advanced, Medela Harmony, Avent Isis, Medela Hospital grade and a few others. They all have their pros and cons.
I originally bought the Playtex Embrace for when I went back to work, and I even bought 2 extra breast cup sets so I wouldn't have to clean them during the day (I pump 3 times a day). This combo worked fine for me, and the Playtex pump has its merits. I found, however, that the PIS is much easier to clean and assemble, with less parts to take apart and wash at the end of the day, so I have ended up using only the PIS (with a Harmony as a backup for emergencies).
I have found it easier to have 3 total sets of connectors and valves/membranes and one set of breast cups to use (Try the soft fit and larger sized ones to find the perfect fit). When I'm done pumping I just remove the cups and wipe them with the terrific Medela Quick Cleaning Cloths for the next use, and throw the connectors into a ziplock bag to wash at home later.
I find that the volume of milk I get is approximately the same using the Medela or the Playtex, but since the Medela is so much easier to clean at night, this one wins over the Playtex Embrace.
I did have to buy a car adapter for the Medela and the Playtex comes with one. Also, I use the Playtex bottles and One-step storage system with Drop-ins, so I had to buy 2 kits in order to have to adapters to double pump with.
Now I plan to buy a Hands free pumping bra next.
Thanks to all these wonderful products, I am able to feed my baby exclusively breast milk and she is now five months old.
I plan to continue pumping at work for at least seven more months and I believe the PIS will take me there.

Customer Review: A word of caution
Summary: 2 Stars

OK guys - I bought the pump based largely on the glowing recommendations on this website, even though I was a little suspicious that perhaps reps from the company are jumping on and inflating the pump's reviews. Now I am certain of it. I have an 11 day old infant who is not gaining weight. The doctor told me to start pumping 3 days ago -- which I did. Unfortunately, the pump conked out about 5 minutes into the session. I tried again the next day -- the pump would conk out, or there would be no difference in intensity regardless of how high I put the suction. A call to Medela and I was told I would get a new pump -- after some prodding, the woman agreed to overnight it to me. Imagine my surprise when all I got was the cover for the diaghram. Another call to Medela: the rep talked me through replacing the dighram cover (she thinking that was the problem -- me certain it was not) and lo and behold -- nothing!!! The pump still didn't work. After I complained about expecting an actual replacement, her response was "The woman you talked to yesterday should have explained what she was sending." This customer rep has promised to send a new motor. (and she had the gall to ask me if I was going to send back the diaghram cover). Meanwhile, I have a newborn who is not gaining weight. We rented a hospital grade pump -- and frankly, I wish I had not bought the Medela pump and had just rented. The company's response to this problem is wholly unacceptable. If you are thinking about buying one -- only do it if you are totally established with feeding your baby. If there is a problem - it's not like you can just run to the store and exchange the product and it's not like the company is going to help you. Also, their instruction booklet is paltry on information (especially on storing breast milk).

Customer Review: Worth the Extra Money!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I registered for and received the Avent Isis Back-To-Work Breast Pump Set as a shower gift. I had read several wonderful reviews and decided I didn't need an expensive pump if a less pricey one could do the same job. I really enjoyed it while I was at home the first seven weeks after my baby was born; however, when I returned to work and needed to pump four times a day, five days a week, I found it didn't meet my expectations. I needed a pump that could express my milk in a minimal amount of time due to limited break times at my job.

After some more research I began to look into the Medela Pump in Style and the Traveler Pump in Style. I figured that even though both were quite pricey, it would be worth it to me in the long run since I plan to breastfeed for at least a year and want to stay away from formula. I was planning on purchasing the Traveler Pump in Style when the Pump in Style Advanced came out. It was more than I planned to spend, but I decided to try it due to reviews claiming it cut down on time spent pumping. I haven't been disappointed. I can pump 5-6 oz. in five minutes and up to 10 oz. in 10-15 minutes. I used to only get a maximum of 4 oz. from my Avent Isis Pump after at least twenty minutes of pumping. The Pump in Style Advanced is also comfortable to use, easy to assemble and disassemble, and the bag is stylish and discreet with plenty of storage room. Of course clean up can take a few minutes, but that is true with any pump.

I would highly recommend the Pump in Style Advanced for the working mom who wants to continue breastfeeding (or using only breastmilk) for any extended length of time. I have never had to use formula and feel wonderful knowing my baby is getting the best nutrition he needs even when it comes from a bottle. Definitely worth the extra money!

Customer Review: Great Pump!
Summary: 5 Stars

This pump is the only way I have been able to breastfeed my Little Monster for the past 4 months. She wouldn't take my breast and I was too tired and too much in pain after her birth to really try to get her to latch on. Plus, when you pump, you know how much the baby is getting. I pump at least 20 ounces a day. I supplement with Enfamil Lipil Ready to Feed, which the pediatrician recommended. I don't think there's anything wrong with formula if you don't produce enough milk. This way, your child gets the benefits of breastmilk such as antibodies, as well as the vitamins and iron in formula.

This pump is very effective. It sucks fast for 2 minutes and then slow and deep for however long you want it to. I am able to pump 10 ounces in less than 15 minutes in the morning. A friend recommended Mother's Milk tea and Fennegreek for getting more milk, but I think I am happy with the amount of milk I pump. I don't mind supplementing with formula. It's a pain to get up at night to pump because I value my sleep, so I don't want too much milk. My breasts are like rocks in the morning.

I bought the Advanced Pump in Style with the backpack from a lactation consultant and it came with a battery pack as well as a car adapter. The battery pack is a pain to use because it takes 10 AA batteries and the power runs out in a few days. Get rechargeable batteries to save some money. The car adapter works well, as does the AC adapter. However, the AC adapter is very big and heavy. They should make the battery pack rechargeable just by plugging it in. The backpack is medium sized but heavy-- although it is nice and comes with different pockets for credit cards, cell phone, water bottle, ice pack, etc.

Highly recommended and the most used baby product I bought besides the car seat.
