Baby Products Reviews of Medela Contact Nipple Shield - Standard Size (24mm)

Customer Review: A blessing for cracked nipples!
Summary: 5 Stars

This product was a real life-saver for me! I only wish I had started using it sooner. A day or so after my daughter's birth, one of my nipples became cracked, which caused a lot of pain every time I tried to nurse on that side. The nipple never had a chance to heal because I was breastfeeding every few hours. Finally, after about 3 weeks of pain I decided to try this product. It was great! I no longer had any pain when I nursed on that side because the nipple shild created a barier, and allowed the nipple to heal. My baby was able to nurse just fine while I was wearing this. It did not always stay on my nipple very well, but I may not have been putting it on correctly, I now realize. After using it for only 2 days, my nipple had healed sufficiently, and I no longer needed to use the shield. Wonderful! I wish I had used this after the birth of my first child, too, because I had the same issue with cracked nipples, but struggled with it much longer since I didn't know about this product.

Customer Review: Great for BF problems
Summary: 4 Stars

My son was five weeks early. Giving him my breastmilk was very important to me. He had a poor latch and a worse suck, so I pumped and gave him a bottle. Everyday I would try him first at my breast then give him the bottle. For six weeks I did this. It was exhausting and I was ready to give up. At my baby shower someone gave me the contact nipple shield as a gift. He was old enough to have a good suck. In three days he went from bottle to shield to breast only. It was exactly what he needed to make the transition.
All that said, this should NOT be the first thing you use with your infant. A good lactation consultant will tell you to work with your healthy, term infant for good latch and suck. Giving advice such as expressing a little milk before putting baby on, so that the breast isn't so engorged that it's impossible for baby to latch; would be a great place to start. I don't believe this product was ever intended to be used as a substitute for a good latch.

Customer Review: Detrimental to Milk Supply
Summary: 1 Stars

The hospital lactation consultants really pushed this item. Know that this is detrimental to your milk supply. The baby cannot successfully compress the sinuses around the nipple if he latches on to this shield as he will suck more like he would a bottle. It took me 5 very long and frustrating weeks to wean my baby from this thing. That was time I could have spent enjoying my baby rather than fighting with him. Giving him whole, natural breast milk is extremely important to me or I would have given up and just went to formula. A friend of mine gave up on breast feeding all together when faced with the same problem. The same consultants at the same hospital pushed it on her as well.

If you have flat or inverted nipple know that you do not need an aid. Your baby knows no other nipple and will figure it out. Once the La Leche League leader in my area told me this, it gave me the strength to go for weaning my baby from it.

Customer Review: Gagged my Daughter
Summary: 2 Stars

I have a particularly small child. She was 6 lbs at birth but completely healthy. I purchased this item in hopes to get some relief for my sore nipples. The product is bigger than a bottle nipple. It's to wide and sticks out to far. It gagged her so she would not use it. I'm sure it probably works for some people but I had a Medela Nipple shield with my first child that covered all of the areola and was a better fit. This one is bulky. I may have ordered the wrong size so I would say contact a lactation consultant or your hospital's doula for help. The one I used that worked (4 years ago) was given to me in the hospital. I had to order this one online since we are military and stationed overseas. I did like that the baby gets more skin to skin contact with this item...so if your child isn't a petite little one...they may like it.

Customer Review: Happy mom
Summary: 5 Stars

I am Martina, T. is my husband. I LOVE this product, since my first baby never latched on, even with an older model nipple shield. I had to pump, and eventually my milk diminished and I had to turn to formula completely at 4 months. Now, with my second baby, I had been successful about once a day with a nipple latch-on, but for the rest of the time we are nursing with help of this nipple shield. My nipples are small and flat. I use size 24mm. I have one shield for my diaper bag and two for home. My baby gets enough milk each feeding, I do not see that my milk is decreasing. I would love not to use these for a shear convenience, but this is the best we can do, and my baby nurses exclusively, no formula. The WELLEDA nursing tea in the afternoons helps to maintain a good milk supply as well.
