Baby Products Reviews of Medela Contact Nipple Shield - Standard Size (24mm)

Customer Review: GREAT for baby having trouble nursing!
Summary: 5 Stars

I cannot say enough good things about this product if you have a newborn that is having trouble nursing.

Pros: cheap, better than having a baby who can't nurse on own drinking formula (which is very expensive!) or pumped breast milk from a bottle (which is so time consuming!), does protect nipples from cracks

Cons: none for me or my son!

Being a new mom in this day and age- I was dead set on breastfeeding after hearing endless advice (I'm a stay at home mom so am able to do so). Our problem, my son wouldn't nurse! We had so much hands on help from a lactation specialist for the 2 days we were in the hospital, but we still had trouble when we went home. By his first check up 4 days after he was born, he had lost enough weight that his pediatrician said we needed to get him food through a bottle fast. I was very very relieved once I could see him eating so much breast milk (and he was so much happier since he wasn't hungry!), so for the first month or so of his life I was pumping non stop and feeding it to him by a bottle. Any new mom knows that pumping is NOT what you want to be doing when your new baby is sleeping.

Then we discovered this nipple shield! He could immediately nurse with this and I had so much more time not pumping!! Every week or so I'd try nursing without it, and he wasn't able to do so until he was 4 months old. I had read experts saying to try to get your baby off of the shield as soon as possible- but I found that just going with the flow of my son's abilities was the way to go. He is a perfect nurser now (at 7 months), so a nipple shield obviously didn't mess him up.

Big tip-- BUY AT LEAST 2!!
The worse thing is to loose a nipple shield if your baby is dependent on it for nursing, and they are clear and easy to loose! My step-mom learned the hard way when she went to feed her son and couldn't find it anywhere. He was also dependent on it at that time to nurse, so he was crying the whole time until she could run out and buy another one. Not something you want to put your child through!

And $7 little dollars is nothing compared to the feeling a new mom has of knowing her little baby is getting enough food, a happy baby makes a happy mom!

Customer Review: Advice to Anyone who needs a Nipple Shield
Summary: 4 Stars

There is nothing wrong with the nipple shield, and it arrived in good time and good condition. However, I realized when I opened it that it wasn't what I need. This isn't the fault of the product or the seller, but my own inexperience, and I thought I would leave a review to give a little bit of advice based on what I found out after I bought it.

I had to use a nipple shield with my first child because, like many others, I have short nipples and he had a hard time latching, especially because he was given a regular nippled bottle in NICU, so he didn't really want to work to learn. However, when I used one with him, it was given to me by a lactation consultant, so I knew nothing about what size it was or anything. Now that I am pregnant again, I wanted to be prepared, so that I have one already, just in case I have the same issue - because last time, it took them a long (frustrating and stressful) time to decide to suggest it, so I ordered a couple to have them handy just in case.

When I opened the package, I realized that these ones (standard size) are WAY bigger than what you need for a newborn. If you try to use one of these with a newborn (you can tell just by looking at it in person) the poor baby will have more than a mouthful of plastic and it will interfere with the actual eating. So, I did some research and discovered that the best size to get for a newborn is usually the extra small one. The standard size would be more appropriate to use in an older child.

So, if you are planning to buy these for use with a newborn or young baby, try the small or extra small - do some Google research - or talk to a lactation consultant - to find out more about what size is most appropriate for your baby.

I will keep these, because you never know if I'll need them when she is a little older.. maybe when she gets her first tooth or something - I'll be doing skin to skin breastfeeding by then - the shield is just a precaution in case she needs help learning to latch like my son did.. but it's temporary.. so I guess if I end up needing to use a larger one later for any reason, it will be good to have them handy.

Customer Review: A Godsend - Takes the Bite Out of Nursing
Summary: 5 Stars

Hallelujah! I had the hardest time in the beginning breastfeeding my daughter. She didn't latch correctly but yet had a very firm latch, so she literally took skin off of my nipples. Obviously it was extremely painful. I would wince in pain when she latched on, but once she was on it was ok. I freaked out after I saw blood near her head in her crib, but it was my blood from my nipples dripping out of her mouth! Aack! So I finally got a clue and saw a lactation consultant. Thank God for that profession. I showed her my nipples and she said that other women would have quit breastfeeding by then. But I was determined to breastfeed. She introduced me to these nipple shields, and I started using them right away. What a difference it has made! No more pain and baby and I are both happy as can be nursing! I now own 5 of these, I wash them periodically with soap and water and keep them in a Ziploc bag. It's handiest for me to wash them while I am showering. I keep two in a Ziploc bag in my diaper bag in case I forget to bring the other ones, which has happened.
The lactation consultant initially told me to eventually discontinue them when my daughter learned to latch correctly, but I am still using them and plan to do so the entire time I nurse because my pre-nipple shield experience was extremely painful.
I only wish I found them sooner, and I recommend them to any mother that is experiencing latching problems or inverted nipples. They truly are a wonderful product that I could not live without.

Customer Review: Breastfeeding at 9 months and still going strong
Summary: 5 Stars

I pumped for the first 2 months because my baby wouldn't latch. I tried everything including many trips to a lactation consultant. She was a "tongue thruster" as they would say. After 2 months I was completely worn out from pumping and my dreams of breastfeeding seemed like they were gone. I had bought this shield at the beginning but was afraid to use it because of worries of decreased supply, etc. Well I was away from my husband for a week at my parents and pumping and feeding her by myself left me no time for sleeping during the night so I figured it was now or never. I tried the shield and since it was so similar to the bottles she had been using she did way better latching then normal. I tried removing it after 2 mins like it said and it never worked. She will be 9 months on Friday and I have been breastfeeding with the shield 100% of the time since then. I have bought an extra one as a backup but my original is still working. The best money I ever spent for her. Thank you Medela for another great product.

Customer Review: Nipple problems, latching problems? This is your solution!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am such an advocate for breastfeeding. If I can do it, i believe any Mom can too! I was about to give up if it wasnt for the nipple shield. I have inverted and flat nipples, and my son DID NOT want to latch on for anything! My lactation consultant recommended that I get this and it worked wonders on my nipples- it pulls it right out. He was able to latch on and feed great! He didnt have nipple confusion because it is just like a bottle nipple. I use it alot at night and the downside to it is that it sometimes falls off and/or milk collects in the tip of the nipple shield and shocks my son a little when he sucks because a bunch of milk is at the tip. Another issue is that if it does fall off, you really have to wash it again because it wont really stick back on well.

I still give it 5 stars, because it was a lifesaver for me... if I didnt use this, I probably would have never breastfed! This also may help me with future children... so they might be able to latch on even without the nipple shield.
